Middle Class Video Games Are Shrinking, Too

"With triple-A titles dominating the retail sales charts and small downloadable titles dominating the XBLA, PSN, and mobile sales charts, the ability of B-titles to gain recognition from the press and play time from consumers is now tougher than ever. They now need high review scores as well as triple-A production value just to compete, and that's a gamble many publishers are not willing to take or simply don't have the money to take."

So much of what's happening to the industry right now is due to the economy and the industry's current state of transition. Sad to see some titles get lost in the fold. Good read, here.

Great write-up. It's amazing how the economy can affect everything.

It seems to me like the indie game has become the new "middle class" game.

I never realized this before, but looking around, yeah, this is undeniable o_o

The economy will always play a vital role in how publishers/devs behave. Even so much as how well their titles sell. Unless something is done to accommodate the high unemployment, and rising costs of living, many people won't be capable to save any of those titles.

Yeah but nobody is telling publishers to be greedy Nazis a$$holes.

If they know the economy is in the lutz why on Earth are they constantly pursuing wallet-raping agendas like day-one DLC?! Supposed $200 million dollar game budgets (and I think this number was astronomically inflated)? or disc-locked content?

No one is asking for $100 million dollar games...I don't even know where that came from.

I for one enjoyed the middle class games of the PS2 era, and it was easy to collect dozens and dozens of games during that time because there was such great variety. There was also a lot of prosperity to go around, too.

But nowadays it's either indie title, AAA title or an imported title from Xseed games or Rising Star. The options have been zapped...a lot of it because of greedy a-holes at the top-tier publishers.

Not just that but also the console-manufacturers making the consoles too sophisticated (read: expensive) to develop games for, jacking up development costs. And the hardcore gamers themselves. Well they wanted next-gen hardware, even if it meant paying a rather extravagant price.
