What Dead Space 3 needs to help revive the horror genre

PSU writes: "Publishing powerhouse Electronic Arts this week officially confirmed Dead Space 3 is in the works following months of rumors, with the game due to infest store shelves by March 2013 at the latest. Details are being kept under wraps at present, though that hasn’t stopped numerous Internet sources from leaking info all over the shop, the most prolific of which involves the game’s alleged setting – a frozen planet known as Tau Volantis." (Dead Space 3, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Dead Space Already Redefined Horror.

Yeah man,
Dead space is a perfect Blend of action and Horror:D
Hisiru  +   833d ago
Dead Space ONE already did that and episode 2 just improved the series.

What a silly website! Dead Space has been one of the only games this gen that has managed to be scary and capture the horror feel.

Why revive something thats not dead in the series? This question must be put forward to Crapcom and the Resi series not the Peeps behind Dead Space!

Amnesia: The Dark Descent....people should play that game if they wanna experience a pure horror title at its finest....Dead Space 2 is more of an action game with some horror moments..believe 3 will just expand on action and replace what's left of the horror elements..That PSN game Siren is more horror than Dead Space....

I loved Amnesia, can't wait for the next.

There is no way a game like dead space will take the horror crown from the original resident evil games.
In my opinion right now nobody has the crown any more it's just lying there in the corner of the field waiting to be grabbed.
I think Shinji Mikami might just pick it back up with his new game that is codenamed Zwei.

The RE series lost the horror crown to Silent Hill a long time ago, then Silent Hill lost it to Dead Space.

Well since they are adding co-op (optional or not) it still feels like they are heading in the wrong direction...the one that Capcom took.

I liked DS2 but I felt it wasn't as scary as the first, it felt too open and Sprawls bright lights from the shops and appartments didn't help. I still think the return to the Isshimura was the best level in the game, so it's not like they've lost their horror ways already, they still have it.

It would be great to see Dead Space 3 embrace more moody, atmospheric stretches like the return to the Ishimura in the second game. But to be honest, I really don't see that happening. I think it'll be even more set-piece based and action-oriented next time around - and the current buzz appears to support that.

Doesn't mean it'll be a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. But revive the horror genre? I hardly think so. Frictional's output, Shinji Mikami's new project 'Zwei', and the work of imaginative, inspired indie devs is what we'd do best to look to from now on.

no multiplayer and no co-op

More Horror, Less Shooter.

Less ammo, more curb-stomping
It needs more echoe-y screams & groans!!!

And awesome space suits!! c:
Although most people are shooting down the idea, i love the idea of an optional co-op in DS3. Wouldn't be as scary but would definitely be twice as fun. :b Now add split-screen co-op and it's a Day1 buy.

Amnesia > Dead Space in the "horror" department....

Don't get me wrong, I love Dead Space but it is as much as a horror game as the Alien vs Predator games are....meaning that I feel safe as long as I have ammo. Jump out and "scare" me? gasp, btw here's some lead. Amnesia never lets you feel safe. If a monster jumps out at you, well you've usually only got two options: pray that he didn't see you or freaking run and hide (literally in closets while barricading doors)...here's a hint, choose the latter...

IMO, Frictional Games revived and currently has the horror genre mastered...

As for the topic? easy....go to said studio and take notes.

With that said, Isaac Clarke is BA and the DS story is awesome....looking forward to DS3

Dead Space won't do anything to revive horror. Penumbra and Amnesia already did that. Dead Space is a fun action game. It really isn't very scary though.
