The Road Ahead: CES could be the start of a tough year for Xbox 360

GamesIndustry BIZ, Rob Fahey, 11/01/2008

"In 2008, Microsoft's challenges will be greater than ever before. The Wii is trouncing the Xbox 360 in the casual market; the PS3 is keeping pace with it in (global) week to week sales, despite acres of negative press, and at present has a more appealing 2008 line-up. (Xbox 360's) reliability problems just won't go away, the mass-market remains just as elusive as it's ever been, and key developers (i.e., Bizarre, BioWare and Bungie) have been lost... (Microsoft) had better have some great responses to the challenges 2008 brings."

"Microsoft's silence at CES could be the start of a tough year for the Xbox..."

The beginning of the end.....

It's a snowball effect. 5 years from now when look back at what the turning point was for the PS3 it's going to be 12/07 and 1/08. Unreal 3, Epic, and Sony embracing user generated content, and Warner going exclusively to Blu-ray.

Firstknight you definitely made some solid points to defend the 360, but as much as I still love lost planet, dead rising, some quick gears online action and cod4, i can't help but agree with El_Col and the rest of the community that 2008 is looking to be a bigger year for the ps3.

The reason why is because (like el_col said), Sony has always had one of the biggest umbrellas of 1st party devs out on the market. Each studio also does a great job of complimenting one another by releasing games in all sorts of genres from racing (gran turismo), platforming (ratchet and clank), action (uncharted, heavenly sword, God of war), shooters (resistance), arcade racers (motorstorm), intuitive works (eye of judgment), sports (MLB series) to artistic offerings like Ico or Shadow of the Colossus.

Yes this last year (07) was Microsoft's, but i hardly see 2006 as the 360's year. If anything it was looking pretty bad. Game Informer and multiple other magazines and sites were questioning whether or not the 360 was the new dreamcast, while the ps2 continued to have strong sales with releases like God of war II and mgs3. Then towards the end of 06 look at what happened. The 360 became the console with one of the largest install bases to date. It also has a thriving online community with a host of pretty enticing features (but noticeable flaws as well).

But like a boxing match there is always that guy who comes out strong in the beginning for so many as 7 rounds, but ends up getting knocked out in the 8th. If you know boxing look at what happened in Corrales Vs. Castillo 1. Castillo knocked Corrales down almost 3 times in the 10th, but Corrales got up all 3 times despite the castillo chants and scored a TKO win over Castillo in one of the greatest boxing matches ever (R.I.P. Diego). Anyway if you get my analogy it's not who starts the strongest, but who finishes the strongest.

Yes the 360 had a great year with bioshock, mass effect, halo 3, blue dragon, Forza 2 and even earth defense force (hehe), but 2007 is done and like the original article suggests, there's no denying the 360 is running out of steam this year (well atleast in comparison to the ps3). All the titles coming out may be exclusives, but most are new IP's, which mean they have about as much merit as Uncharted on the ps3. Possibly amazing games, but without a household name they may have little to carry them into the living rooms of 360 owners everywhere.

(Sorry one more boxing analogy) It's like microsoft thought they could completely end the fight in the 9th because of the consistent shots and pounding they and the press had given the ps3 till then. What do you do when you have a fighter on his last legs? Finish him. Send out a couple jabs to set them up (gears of war) boom, (forza 2) bam, then the money shot (Halo3) Kaboom! Floored....Right? Nope guess not. The ps3 got up and got it's second wind (price drop, new bundles, some great exclusive titles)then holy crap the ps3 is still in the fight. What now? Sony now has confidence and what do they do? They decide to store up their energy for the next round and kinda clinch there way through this one.

Now we have a match. Sony sends out a couple jabs with new Ip's (Haze) bam, (unreal 3) boom, news of god of war 3 (bam), then all of a sudden with a flurry like never seen before (MGs4, FF13, Resistance 2, GT5, Killzone 2, White Knight Chronicles, infamous, and ports that are finally on par with the 360). Of course during this flurry the 360 doesn't just give up. They throw out some counters here and there (Alan wake, too human, lost odyssey, halo wars, NG2, splinter cell), but with each shot thrown both fighters get hit in simultaneous exchanges.

The problem here is that the ps3 at this point is simply more busy. Landing more clean shots and in turn making the ps3 win the round on Teddy Atlus's score card. I don't know who'll eventually win the fight, but right now it just seems like Microsoft might've punched themselves out a bit early. It made for a great match in the beginning, but a tired fighter is a tired fighter.

microsoft rushed their console. they should have waited a year and thrown in the internal hddvd player and done some stress testing to isolate the rrod before world wide launch.

if thy had done that, they probably would have won this gen.

now, their image is "unreliable", vista is a waste of time, and hddvd was a disaster.......doesnt look too bright for them.

they should either get out of gaming, or release a new console and start all over. They have the money to burn.

Microsoft has did pretty good with xbox 360...was there aNY DOUBT THAT THEY WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME. SONY IS GETTING THE STUFF TOGETHER WITH BRINGING THE PRICE DOWN AND GETTING THE GAMES OUT......THE WHOLE FORMAT WAR...THEY JUS HAVE THE BETTER CONSOLE...IF U REALLY LOOK AT THEM BOTH THERE IS NO COMPARISON...SONY IS ALWAYS ONE STEP AHEAD...THE 360 USED TO BE THE NOW BUT CLEARLY THEY ARE ABOUT TO BE THE "PAST". THE PS3 IS BUILT FOR THE FUTURE...1 YEAR DOWN THE ROAD EVERYONE IS BEGINNING TO SEE THE TRUTH

destroyah3483d ago

they've got no good games this year. it's all about the PS3 this year, everything else except for the Wii is inferior. 07 was their best and last year.

Ko_Uraki3483d ago

I've read the same thing before the launch of the PS3 (october 2006).

XBOX 360 without any great game.
Where is the nextgen graphics?
360 too weak to compete with PS3.

Then GOW was released and we know very well the story...
You can't predict anything at this point. We don't know if Fable2, Halo Wars, Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human, Alan Wake will be worse than Bioshock or Mass Effect.
If MS can add to this line up, the new Banjo and Gears of War 2, we could even say that the 2008 line up is even better than 2007 line up

pwnmaster30003483d ago

wtf wat is banjo is that like viva pinata

CeruleanSky3483d ago

Banjo-Kazooie, it was a game from Rare on the N64 released in 1998.

was good for Nintendo but for the 360 I don't know if it will do the same impact. Fable 2 cool, Ninja Gaiden 2 cool, too human maybe. MS needs to fix there RROD problem asap if Sony match or go lower price then Xbox 360 competition will be thick for MS.

I think the 360 '08 line up won't be able to compare to the ps3 '08 line up. It appeals very much to the hardcore gamers, but the ps3 line up appeals to a wider demographic.

Little Big Planet, Afrika, Home, Killzone 2, White Knight Story, Final Fantasy XIII (possibly in December, not probable though), Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5, SOCOM Confrontation, Tekken 6, Haze, PSN games (like Soldner Himmelsturmer), Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, etc. appeal not only to hardcore gamers, but also for others.

And then there are the Multi-platform games that will sell well. GTA IV, DMC4, Dynasty Warriors 6, and so on.

Sony has definitely prepared for some good software in 2008, more so than the 360 IMHO.

I'm not sure I need to.

I've always felt that 2008 would be a stale year(for 360) seeing how quiet MS has been since E3 `07. No doubt they had a powerful showing in 2007 but it seems like the steam is dying down.

They've shown absolutely no improvement with their first party showings. They're first party in house console development is pretty near to non-existent. Especially with the departure of Bungie.

With the recent rumors and talks of the "Next-Box" already...it's shameful and almost insulting to consumers if this turns out to be another early drop out like the first Xbox(which I purchased also).
