"Unlocks" and the Gamification of Gaming

In the last five years, unlocks, character progression, and stat-tracking have become standard in online shooters and increasingly all online games. But where did they come from, and how are they changing the way we play? This article tracks the history of unlocks, their drawbacks, and what the future might hold. (Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Dev, EA, Industry, Next-Gen, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Unlock system is to make newbs feel like they doing something. One of the main reasons COD is so popular cause it rewards you like every 5-10mins, It gets you hooked.

Shiny medals, new guns, gun attachments, ribbons, and any unlock is far easier to put into a game rather than making the gameplay addictive. This is the route many developers have taken because its easier to get casuals to play. My friends cant play any game without an extensive unlock system even though they hate CoD they keep playing it.
