Analyst: Subsidized Xbox 360 for $99 'absolutely' a test run for next-gen Xbox

XMNR: The Verge reported on Wednesday that Microsoft will begin selling a 4GB Xbox 360 Kinect bundle for $99 subsidized by a $15 monthly fee for two years. If this report turns true, we couldn’t help but wonder if this could be a test run for the next generation Xbox and contacted Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter for his thoughts.

M$ shamed themselves.

What kind of a future does the 720 have? Kinect 2, $15 LIVE monthly fees, contracts... urh!

ForeverGamer2048d ago

i own both consoles this gen
and if that is the future of the nextxbox
then i will only buy ps4 plus and i already own gaming pc

Shadow Flare2048d ago

If you already own a ps3 and a gaming pc then why do you own a 360?

EVILDEAD3602048d ago

LOL @ people pretending you HAVE to buy a console with this contract...

Bu-bu-but I will NEVER buy a $300 dollar cellphone because they allow people to get one cheaper and pay a two-year contracted fee..

Just like cellphones, not everyone is going to be able to afford to jump into the next gen as soon as it arrives. If they can pay a flat 100 dollar fee and get everything for a few dollars a month why would that option bother ANYONE who could afford it outright.

Millions of people have bought consoles with cedit cards and pay interest. Micrsoft literally found a way to emulate the cellphone market to entice people to purchase their consoles.

This ultimately will be more people buying games as well. I'm sure the makers of Angry birds arent mad that cellphone contracts exist.

Won't bother me..I already own all of the current gen and will I'll own all of next gen day one as well.

How do you play Halo, Forza, Gears, Lost Odyssey, Crackdown, Shadow Compklex, Kameo etc on your PC ?

And not everybody likes to wait one year just to play a game that is already on the 360.

ForeverGamer2048d ago (Edited 2048d ago )

@superlupe
i'm sorry
beside gears and halo
nothing on xbox any one would miss if he own pc/ps3
and funny you said
"And not everybody likes to wait one year just to play a game that is already on the 360."
because as i remember every xbox fan was waiting a year for Witcher 2

and i do own xbox360 BTW

Shadow Flare2048d ago (Edited 2048d ago )

I just figured he got an Xbox 360 because he had some builders working next door and he needed to drown out their noise

EVILDEAD3602048d ago (Edited 2048d ago )

'beside gears and halo
nothing on xbox any one would miss if he own pc/ps3'

Spoken like a true..umm what do you call it?

Yeah..that one..and throw in the other one too

I love when people pretend that millions of Xbox gamers are frothing at the mouth because they are missing another consoles games..Its the same with PS3 gamers..they aren't missing other consoles games as well.

I'm a console gamer by choice after years of PC gaming and honestly other than wanting a MMO here and there and maybe Diablo 3 (which is also coming to consoles) I don't miss anything.

I bought all 3 consoles because I love franchises from all of them, but that's just me.

Just my humble take..

The current xbox has kinect, fees to access online services that includes a contract.

Why are you surprised that Microsoft would do this for the next generation?

coolbeans2048d ago (Edited 2048d ago )

"...$15 LIVE monthly fees, contracts... urh!"

Feel free to prove how this contract deal for ONE of the 360 bundles will be implemented into EVERY 720 bundle. You could have had a decent argument going without the part I quoted.

Queasy2048d ago

I would expect a subsidized Xbox 720 to be an option for buyers. Not the only option.

MS would likely release the 720 at $400 or so and sell a subsidized version at like $200 or $250 as an example.

While you may not like the idea of cell-phone model for game consoles, it's just an extra option that is available that you don't have to participate in if you don't want to.

Anon19742048d ago

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I think this is a great idea, and I think it would be a good idea for next gen as well. New consoles are pricey. Microsoft already struck gold by convincing console games it's alright to pay for online play, now they want to lock in that revenue stream on a more long term basis and this is the perfect way to do it. It benefits those who might not be able to come up with the full amount of a new console up front because it gives them an option, it benefits Microsoft because it provides longer term revenue streams.

It certainly doesn't hurt anyone to have more options available to the consumer.

Im curious to see how this is going to affect next gen. I could see microsoft selling the 720 for say $499 or $549 at launch or offering it for $199 plus $18 per month fees saying next gen is more expensive so its $18 instead of $15. For people who dont have credit & for parent who dont understand the details of it i could see that having a huge impact especially if sony doesnt offer somthing similar. Some people are stupid & wont do the math just see next gen for $199 & buy it. This could be very interesting, however i dont like the idea of "getting people used to paying a monthly fee". I already pay a monthy fee to gamefly for my games i dont want to pay microsft & or sony also!

Mustang300C20122048d ago (Edited 2048d ago )

Then don't. Why are you here? Some of you bitch about options just to bitch. Somehow some of you live in this world that every person is the same and nobody is diverse. It is options take it or leave it. Not the end of the world.

kma2k2048d ago

lol man whats with the hate & attack? I said IM CURIOUS i never said this is bullcrap or i hate microsoft. I simply said im not a fan of paying montly contract. I never meant for what i wrote to be taken as bitching & rereading it dont see it?

vega2752048d ago

Dude watch what say. I lost a bubble for saying the exact samerhing in the other thread about no one asking for anyone on this site advise about how to spend their money.

Just A warning if you care about them.

supremacy2048d ago

Well alot of people hate contractual business, I mean red box, metro pcs and the like have been growing because of this.

I can understand why people would buy into this, I mean a next gen platform for a suggested low end entry price seems like a steal.( that is if you dont read the fine print)

Nobody likes contracts, but again if the product demands that kind of commitment many will budge.

I have a feeling they'll do this, but they will also sell it at full retail price.

Hicken2048d ago

I can't forecast doom and gloom for Microsoft, because they'll make out like a bandit on this(too many people who don't pay attention). I wonder if they'll count those as sales when people sign the contract, or whether they'll wait until the payments are complete. My money's on the former.

But I CAN see this contributing to gaming becoming even more crappy than it is now. I don't even want to think too hard about it.

maniacmayhem2048d ago

This may be a test run just like the pspGO.

TheDivine2048d ago

Sony will be in for a rude awakening if they launch even a 400 dollar console only for ms to launch a 99 dollar console. I think its a great idea if they dont overcharge. If the 720 would cost 400 sell it for that or for 100 down and 300 over 3 years which would have free repairs while under payment. That would alleviate doubt after the rrod fiasco.

Its a decent idea imo.

BabyTownFrolics2048d ago

you are a reasonable person amongst the mob, have a bubble

Ju2048d ago

This is not a $99 deal - amazing how suggestive and ignorant people are if they just see numbers but no small print.

pcdaley212048d ago

If (xbox720) is $400 - giving users the box for free and signing up to a 2yr contract @ $20p/m including live access is a great business model for Microsoft. I'd sign up to that
