No Big Improvements For Black Ops 2 Graphics Engine

Techtorial: Those who are watching the trailer for Black Ops 2 can instantly distinguish the similarity of its graphics from its predecessor (Black Ops 1) released two years ago; suggesting there's no big improvements for its graphics engine despite of the recent interview conducted from its online director. (Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Honestly who expected any? Why waste money building a new engine when 10+ million people are going to buy the game regardless.
GraveLord  +   387d ago
It's actually 25million+

I hate people like that who are such graphics whores. Most of us want to buy a game, not an engine.
Pekolie  +   387d ago
Oh you sneaky devil gravelord ;)

But yeh theres no point in giving COD better graphic's. I remember reading an article maybe a week ago "Console gamers only care about graphics", i thought bullshit when i read that. Blops 2 announcement proved me wrong :/

Yeah the haters want to hate because MW3 was such a change lol You could find these same comments during the arrival of MW3 and guess what ppls criticism was warranted and it ended up being same old bs. The only thing that has changed is that now they have dummies paying for a so called "elite" service that should be free and different kill streaks and oh let me not forget it takes place in different places. yeah the concepts are real interesting lol jajajaja

Why would you want cutting edge graphics on 7-year-old hardware? There should be more articles titled “No improvements to console hardware in 2012”
Erudito87  +   387d ago
bf3 looked pretty amazing so did crysis2 and so many other games stop defending lazy greedy devs
fullymoated  +   387d ago
BF3 did look Amazing. On PC. Anyone who thinks console graphics are still amazing are delusional. This is coming from a console player.
fullymoated  +   387d ago
And don’t get me wrong, Treyarch is totally lazy! =)
Erudito87  +   387d ago
dont the cod devs make one engine per cycle?
WeskerChildReborned  +   387d ago
I believe their not gonna make a new engine till Next Gen at this rate.
Trenta27  +   387d ago
I would not be surprised if they didn't use a new engine next gen.
SKUD  +   387d ago
At this rate the current engine is making so much money without offering any significant improvements technically it would be down rite horrible to disturb it.

The PC version is supposed to have DX11 support but with also stating all versions will be the same I can't imagine it providing night / day difference graphically.
Series_IIa  +   387d ago
To be fair, you can't expect 60fps and amazing graphics...

Unless you're talking about PC of course, but alas... The market is mainly aimed at the lowest common denominators
Trenta27  +   387d ago
I don't see the big deal about running at 60fps. I must be missing something.
2v1  +   387d ago
is this on the wii
kuntryboy  +   387d ago
RAGE says hi. Even though the game wasn't that great Carmack did show that they could make an engine on consoles, open world, run at 60fps and make COD look like a PS2 game.

Yeah but there was texture pop up everywhere, spoiled the looks abit I think
Kaos_Vll  +   387d ago
you mean that game with CONSTANT pop ins? with a max of MAYBE 10 enemies on the screen at a time? The game ran no where near like you make it out to be bud...

The fans of COD could care less about "cutting edge" graphics, most want dedicated servers, better hit detection, better matchmaking and better spawns.

I can't phantom what you people are thinking that want them to change a proven formula that IT'S FANS like, JUST to seem fresh to a group they care nothing about.

But you all are blokes. As soon as they change up and it's fanbase hates it you'll be saying how they should have done something else. Really cant grasp what is happening to gaming nowadays...

Que the, "But it runs at 60 FPS and can't have amazing graphics!" comments.

Seriously, considering the amount of revenue this franchise makes, it's astounding that a new engine hasn't been developed for utilisation in future instalments.
If I was part of the growing developers list for the Call of Duty franchise (post original Modern Warfare), I'd feel ashamed regarding the lack of innovation, or at least obliged to create a new engine, I mean, surely Treyarch, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer, Raven and Activision must be aware that the COD franchise is quickly becoming the joke of the games industry (quality wise), no wonder Robert Bowling left.

Countless, brilliantly talented developers such as Epic, Naughty Dog, Irrational and more take time with developing sequels, implement a large catalogue of new gameplay mechanics, improvements and more out of respect for both their community and their own reputation, Activision cares about neither.

What exactly does the current engine lack that you want a new engine to do?

You named a bunch of 'brilliantly talented' developers, none of which have made a multiplayer game running at 60fps.

Currently, the CoD games have a two-year dev cycle, which is pretty much the same for most other developers.
LeoDDestroyer  +   387d ago
Why do people treat 60fps like it that great. Maybe in pc where you can have it all but it just not needed for console atm. With the others at 30fps there is so much more that can be done. I would rather it be a great looking game at 30fps than an avg. one at 60fps.
Ducky  +   387d ago
^ In that case, you're simply picking graphics over gameplay.

Nothing wrong with that.

I prefer an average looking game at 60fps, because of the smoother controls.

No it was more in reference in what additional things that can bring into the game and have it look great. I have bf3 on the ps3 which looks and plays great. CoD next to something like bf3 or killzone 3 just looks and feels dead. Rage and CoD are the two I played the less because of how little they really offer.
Kaos_Vll  +   387d ago
As he said, you are picking how it looks over how it plays. BF3/KZ3 looks great but plays no where near as fast and fluid as any current cod game.

It's fine that a slower pace gameplay is great for you, how is it not great that others like something faster?

If I had to chose I'd take gameplay over graphics ANY day. Seems there are 20 million others that feel the same way.
marioPSUC  +   387d ago
I dont think they are going to make a new engine until the new consoles come out. It still sells even without the most amazing graphics so they just tweak it a little bit without having to make an entirely new engine.

Still though it will be lagging considerably behind most of the games coming out this year in terms of graphics.
Kingdom Come  +   387d ago
I actually doubt they'll create a new engine for a few installments in to the next generation of consoles. The first game will most likely be released for both the current and next generation consoles in order to attain the highest possible sales figures possible...
Burning_Finger  +   387d ago
No S*** Sherlock.

Activision wants 20+ years cycle on their dev kit.

The only thing that forces them to change is the next generation hardware that will not be able to support their current game engine.

Do people realize that on these consoles you can't do the multiplayer CoD offers and keep the 60fps.

You can't keep the number of players in each game without making sacrifices. BF3 already proved that.
Omar91  +   387d ago
Look at it from a business standpoint. Why on earth would I want to create a new engine for a game that I feel every year and makes millions the first week? They know the casual audience will buy this game no matter what. Also This gen is going on to a close, whats the point of making a brand new engine to then make a new one for the new gen consoles which are most likely a year or two away?

Business wise, they are doing what will make them money and hold off on losing money. You guys need to stop acting like every company is going to think of the consumers first then there sales.
GillHarrison  +   387d ago
This is the same reason on-disc DLC is popular with many companies.

I also do not see them making a heavy investment into a new/licensed engine until the next cycle of consoles.

Game like cod running round like blue ass fly oh look care package omg omg gota get my care package dam i think my frame rate dropped.
Incase you think wtf its called sense of humor
GillHarrison  +   387d ago
They are still running on a heavily modified id Tech 3 engine. Activision should invest in a new proprietary engine or license a more modern engine. Call of Duty games may look slightly outdated, but they all run at 60 FPS on all consoles so you really have choose one or the other.
Killman  +   387d ago
And it will recieve a free pass and be hyped to the moon, as always.

Why is there still so much hype for these games....?
Gamer-Z  +   387d ago
Why would they spend money on improving COD when it will sell millions regardless.
Steadyhndz  +   385d ago
They improved COD?
monsterduc1000  +   387d ago
I will most likely pass on COD this year. I have been playing some version of this game for the past 7 years and other than COD4, it just gets a bit worse each time, especially the Treyarch versions. Black ops played exactly like the mediocre WaW, which I'm sure that means the BlOps2 will be no different. Sure the scenery changes, but everything else remains the same. It will have a short story campaign with a half baked laggy online and expensive add-ons.
NeloAnjelo  +   387d ago
New Engine? How about a new game? People have been buying this same crap for years.
Euthanasia78  +   387d ago
Why would they change ANYTHING? It's all about the money, and aslong as kids, soccer moms, and jock's girlfriends keep playing this steaming pile of rehashed trash dog crap, they will keep making the same exact thing. COD is the equivelant of 80's hair metal bands. We will look back on it and just laugh. Its that bad. And no! Popular does not mean good.
PersonMan  +   387d ago
How exactly was CoD4 a new engine?
Steadyhndz  +   385d ago
Lets take a step back and look at all the COD games.

2005 (we'll start with this one) COD2 came out. Wasn't a huge difference from the previous game...the graphics are seemingly better mainly because PC hardware has improved quite a lot in such a short time. Everything else though was just about the same.

skip COD 3, we all know why

COD4. Major changes, running is now an option, graphics have a significant difference, additionals such as killstreaks are added. And a whole new multiplayer design that is based around "upgrades" and levels"

CODWaW. Basically took the COD4 engine and placed it in a WWII setting..no changes here really. Just an expansion really, with tons of glithces

2009, CODMW2. Game looks much brighter (Graphics didn't really change in MW2....they just made the colors more vibrant from COD4, which made the graphics seemingly better).

2010 Black Ops. Again, just a game that took the previous engine and put it into a different setting. Just an expansion of the previous game

2011 MW3. Just a map pack of Mw2 that has new weapons and killstreaks.

2012 Black Ops II...just an expansion of the game before, that takes place in the future that replaces killstreaks with futuristic ideas such as drones, remote tanks, and shit we wish we will have in 2025.

So what is the COD series really? Just a big gigantic patch of COD2 and COD4, with new guns, maps and kill streaks.
