DualShock Nexus: The latest promotional video for Starhawk attacks a certain group of people a majority of gamers despise...campers.
(Lightbox Interactive, PS3, Starhawk)
lol....."say hello to the main menu" first time i hear that line. :) i played the beta like a month ago and i only killed a hand full with the pod. but it never crossed my mind about campers!!!
"great job there developers, you have a day one with me"
That was the most rewarding thing about Starhawk back in the beta. You could have the worst game and take out someone with a revenge kill in an instant. So satisfying.
That's the problem; it's TOO effective. Sometimes it feels like everything has to stop for that one guy. Killing them isn't always easy either. A good player can wreak havok from the nest on Syria in Uncharted 3.
Depends on the game. If you're defending a thing, camping makes sense. If you're attacking a thing why the hell are you hiding in a corner/hole/whatever?
It's not supposed to be easy. It's just a way to play the game. Running around with a sniper rifle in map with tight corners is just stupid. Staying in one spot is just a way to make a gun useful. And it's supposed to be effective. There is no such thing as TOO effective.
@Biggest Your right the only time I get mad at campers is when I'm attacking something and they're on the other side of the map contributing nothing. If they're camping and still killing people for the benefit of the team then I don't really care.
Most would agree that playing games in a tactical manner is what everyone should be doing. Problem is hardly anyone plays as a team in so many games. This is why clans are so effective.
The real issue isn't camping, it's playing team based objective games with idiots who don't want to play as a team. So many either refuse to communicate with their team or play solo. If that's the case why play team based games?
I find myself playing less and less online with strangers. It is so much more rewarding playing with people I know either personally or those who I have added to my friends list. The anonymity that plagues game forums also trickles on online services, and the tools these platforms provide to prevent bad experiences are archaic at best.
it is an effective strategy, ..... BUT NOT WHEN YOUR SPAWN CAMPING.....and if he is getting on your nerves, go out and kill him. It cant be that hard, its clear hes lacking some skill in close combat.
I agree, Capt. I never understand people complaining about campers. They seem to be admitting a lack of skill and intelligence. Camping is a perfectly valid tactical strategy, closing off one route and forcing the other team to try something else. Campers can be dealt with if a team works together, which is the real problem, because a list of the most popular games proves people prefer mindless run and gun over tactical team play.
If tactical play was the motivation for those guys , then they shouldnt have any issues with anti camping mechanics . After all it will just be another layer of obstacles to strategize around :p .
It's a contrived excuse imo ... i've yet to encounters many people doing it for strategic reasons , and when they do we hardly call them campers , they are just doing their jobs as snipers . Not necessarily abusing maps flaws and respawn zones .
Camping is a perfectly reasonable tactic, however, there are same games where bad map design leads to campers having an unfair advantage. (i.e. a map having one hallway as a choke point, where a camper can easily rack up kills)
Rather than blame the map design, people would rather blame the camping player... and will keep on rushing head on and dying over and over in frustration.
It's up to the game to create a balance between rushers and campers; judging from the video, Starhawk's devs are trying to do that.
Playing cheap is an effective strategy but what is the point? just to say that you won? What satisfaction does that give anyone? That you hid in a corner and killed people? People that do anything to win including playing cheaply and cheating to me are pathetic.Show that all you are good at is running away and hiding
I just don't understand how it's cheap. The only time I camp is in Uncharted when I'm sniping in the corner of the map. People still kill me. Yes I agree with when people are camping to kill people as they spawn is cheap that is just exploiting a flaw in design but when it is reasonable there is no problem in my mind.
I don't mind snipers camping from waaaay back only if sniping is actually challenging in the game. Most games these days don't have the sniper's breath and lens glare effect. They also don't make moving the crosshairs slow enough for sniper rifles. Hell, in some games it's possible to run and gun with a sniper rife due to that very reason.
Beside it's not just snipers that camp. You can have someone with an assault rifle in a room waiting for someone to come through the door and kill. I call this a cheap tactic more than an effective strategy. If everyone were to camp this way the game would go nowhere. Camping is such a boring way to play.
Plus it's probably a growing stage for new players. When I started playing Warhawk, my first online game, I didn't know any better but to guard the flag. I never cared about my personal score and K/D ratio though. When I got more skills and learned from others about objectives other than just making a kill, I went further on the map. I kind of appreciate that some guys do stay close to guard the flag.
Warhawk was sweet. Hope Starhawk is just as sweet!
@FuzzyPants Sometimes it's easier said then done. Besides, nobody likes being taken out by somebody they can't even see who takes the shot from the safety of his perch. It's kinda cowardice in my opinion, but that's just me.
It's not like it's easy though. It still takes a fair amount of skill. When I get killed from across the map I usually just laugh and say he damn he got me.
Sniping I got no problem with. Just camping. Sure, it takes some level of skill but that doesn't negate it's cowardice. Building a missile takes skill, using it is still cowardice.
It's your fault for camping. You won't die by someone spawning on you if you don't camp. Don't stay in one place and you won't get killed by someone spawning on you. Always be on the move simple.
Camping refers to standing in one spot getting kills while not being productive in the current game mode. It's a cheap- if effective- tactic used to pad an individual's stats, but contributes little to the team effort.
Being strategically placed to defend a flag or base is NOT camping.
Being strategically placed to kill people as soon as they spawn IS camping.
Picking off enemies from a distance as they cross open terrain is NOT camping.
Picking off enemies from a few feet away as they traverse a critical hallway IS camping.
My point precisely better explained . And those pretending they are playing fairly shouldnt mind having a challenge or two with anti camping tech like starhawk's .
Poor level/map design, limited testing, lack of support, all contribute to camper mentality for all the wrong reasons..... clever map design, extensive testing, continued support after release, allow for numerous solutions to potential situations, including ' camping ' . A time to camp,a time to hunt campers.Good games & gamers allow both.

They are just usually there for their own stats , or find it fun to lock the game for everyone

Then your forever fighting the same person in the exact same situation which gets boring.

Maybe it was because nobody seemed to have a clue what they were doing.
CTF matches would usually just end in a stalemate if no-one caps the flag in the first two minutes.
The pieces were all there in the beta, but the intensity was often missing. Hopefully they've improved on the final build.
