The Independent: "After announcing its first public loss, is this game over for the console giant - or will its new Wii come to the rescue?"
(3DS, Nintendo, Nintendo DS, Wii, Wii U)
There's no doubt that Nintendo is flush with cash, but it's not like that money is just sitting in the bank and Iwata dives in and swims around in it like Scrooge McDuck. Nintendo is using that money, they're expanding, they covering shortfalls, they're paying dividends to their stockholders, etc. They're not going to disappear overnight, and no one is saying that, but if the 3DS continues to struggle to find a foothold outside of Japan it will never replace the lost revenue from the DS, which in the past was Nintendo's largest source of revenue. And if the Wii-U fails to take off like the Wii, which Nintendo themselves seem to be bracing for, then both their key revenue streams will be decimated. Nintendo has enough banked to fund their operations for some time, but then what?
That's the point. The media isn't talking about Nintendo's up-hill battle just because they like to make stuff up, they're talking about it because it's true. Nintendo is at a crossroads in a changing marketplace. And it's the analysts, investors and Nintendo themselves discussing the challenges they face. The media isn't creating this story, they're just reporting on it. And to those in denial that this is actually taking place, all you have to do is listen to Nintendo themselves discuss this. They've been very frank, and very public, about their missteps and the challenges they face.
Nintendo is fine they've made more profit in gaming than any of these companies. With profit comes loss at some point and then profit again when you come out with new hardware.
Still going to get Wii U no matter what because I have grown up with almost all Nintendo consoles and I still love the games!
I haven't had a portable since the Gameboy color, but that may change with the 3DS and Vita. I'm tempted every day to get both.
Nintendo has billions in the bank, billions(plural)! A loss of a few million is like us loosing a couple of dollars out of a hundred.
all these doom articles for Nintendo...wouldn't you say the media is biased against Nintendo?
*haha, I love throwing that in there!*
