HD DVD Backers to Switch to Blu-ray Soon?

Variety reports that the two remaining studios backing HD DVD could switch sides soon, ending the high-def format war instantly.

The trade has confirmed that Universal's commitment to backing HD DVD exclusively has ended. And Paramount has an escape clause in its HD DVD contract allowing it to release films on Blu-ray Disc after Warner Bros.' decision to back that format exclusively.

Why cling to a losing/los format when there is BD?

However this is a victory for both SONY and PS3 owners

Hopefully 2008 sees a flawless victory for PS3 in the console world

everything would be easier if they just give up.. it's like a fly try to pass thru the glass!

so more people can end their indecisiveness and start enjoying high-def movies. I can't even watch regular DVD anymore.

ITR3395d ago

I disagree.
I can watch most unconverted movies on DVD, but once you switch to HD Directv it's hard to look at STD def shows again.

I would say not until Profile 2.0 is released.
At least then it'll be able to get DLC and online updates like the current gen and last gen HD players.

Why buy a cheap 1.0 or even a 1.1 when it'll be outdated in 3-4 months time frame.
I'm not even sure why BD went to even 1.1..they should've just went straight to 2.0 and been done with it 2 months ago.

you've never been a proponent of Blu-ray. Just a big butt bootie ho for DVD and nintendo. So now wtf is up w/ you? Slapped w/ a little reality & progress?

The educated consumers have informed those who are uninformed that Blu-Ray is the industry leading disk format that will lead an unprecedented future. With PLAYSTATION® 3 as one of the driving supporters of the Blu-Ray Disc format, all inhabitants of electronics have made the correct decision in supporting what is the leading standard in high definition.

So Blu-ray sold more discs because PS3 buyers actually KNEW what they had in their machines? Sorry.

sony won the format war by putting more players out there in the market. They sold more discs by volume yes, but the average ps3 owner owns .6 movies. The average HD-DVD owner owned six movies per player. This suggests to me that most ps3 owners weren't actually too interested in owning more than the free movie they got. The small fraction of ps3 owners who did go out and buy movies happened to amount to more than the HD-DVD community in sheer volume though - and they outsold HD-DVD EVERY WEEK OF THE YEAR.

It was a very confusing and stupid format war. "Educated consumers?" Hardly. I personally believe if most people were aware of the DRM dangers tucked into BLU, "educated consumers" would have, and did stay away. Doesn't mean they won.
