Why Should a Video Game Franchise Die Just Because You Don’t Like It?

Kotaku - What is it about folks that call for the death of franchises they dislike rather than simply ignoring them?

GameTrailers did a video of the top ten franchises that need to die and all the usual suspects made the list (Call of Duty, Madden, Halo, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, etc.) and it just boggles my mind. (Culture)

Personally they don't need to "die" and it has nothing to do with whether I like it or not.

From my perspective annual releases stress the industry. It's a short term business model, in the long run it'll like cause some issues. Whether that's a full on game industry collapse, or just a couple large companies taking a big dip in sales.

Call of Duty is great for the industry because it keeps all the idiots out of all the good games :)

Annual Releases are necessary to keep this industry growing. Without games Call of Duty and FIFA/Madden..etc, this industry would still be exclusive to nerds in their mothers basements.

your not looking at it in a business and investment sense. Investment wise yearly releases are like high risk stocks. Eventually every high risk stock takes a dive, or converts to low risk. Call of duty selling every years is totally great for the industry, but if it stopped selling record amounts of games it would single handedly ruin activision. Which would go a long way in setting the profit records, and industry size back a bit.

Do you think otherwise? Aside from blizzards contribution call of duty makes up nearly all of activisions revenue. All thats left after that are some licensed games and a few under performing old ip. If cod took a sales dip of any amount at all really people would start selling activision stock in droves. Which would cripple the massive company almost instantly.

if you do not like a game, stay away from it. it is very simple. i dont listen to justin beiber even though he is extremely popular why should i treat games any differently?

I wouldnt say Call of Duty needs to die...

I just think it needs to change massively before it gets any more hate.

Activision can save the franchise and actually make it something good if they just listen to us.
Rinkuchal  +   419d ago
to be fair, does it need saving if it makes money for Activision? it may not be good, but it does sell...

There are different ways to be saved. Ask Jesus.

They can keep making COD for all I care, im not buying it so i does not affect me.

Ive got Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, Guild Wars 2, Hawken, Prey 2 and Aliens colonial marines to look forward to.

People who hate on it are probably the same sad kunts who comment on youtube videos of metal songs saying crap like all the dislikes are justin beiber fans.

People can choose which game they want to buy and stay away from, whether they are exclusives, multiplatform: annual releases, milked games etc etc.

Its the consumers choice, the game industries just provides us with choices.

They can make what ever game they want, but don't they dare bitch about sales when the game they make isn't what the gamers want to play/buy.
basilezz3030  +   419d ago
as long the game is good and the gamers love it
than why it should die ???

side note : COD are not good and need to die

lol at my double standards

... because if enough of us don't like it... you can't make money off of it.

The reason there is so much hate for Call Of Duty and others of it's ilk is because of the lemming mentality from other developers. They want piece of the pie and most of them end up end up pooting (Curse you Adventure Time!) on their long-time fanbase to do it by implementing the game's mechanics into their title.

And guess what is the first drop of venom that drips from the snake's mouth when the inevitable outrage follows because of their changes, "We are trying to reach the Call Of Duty players....."

Yes. All videogames would be better if franchises I didn't like would die.
