Sony to stop Japan shipments of 20-, 60-GB PS3

Toyko, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Sony said on Thursday it would stop shipments of PlayStation 3 models with 20- and 60-GB hard disk drives in Japan this month, focusing instead on the 40-GB model.

Sony said that this does not mean the 40-GB machine will be the only model available in Japan and that it will launch new models to respond to end-user preferences.

wow......i didnt even know sony was still shipping/making the 20gb model anymore, i thought they stopped months ago

@below, thats a very good point, the 20GB model would still be very good for someone to pick up now, the only drawback is it doesnt have built in wifi.....and that chrome trim sure is pretty on my 60GB model :P

I think 20GB is the best model.

-PS2 compatibility
-SACD support
-Price, you can pick 200 GB HDD with the balance.

wi-fi is good for web browsing or somethin but useless for online gaming...and USB slots is enough and don't need other slot.

Yeah but no WiFi, or readers.

For the record, the 20GB is second best because of the backwards compatibility is still there.

Personally: 60GB, 20, 80 40.

For the record, I own the 20GB.

In what way is the 20GB the best?

The 60GB has the same features plus WiFi and card readers.

It's a shame that Sony is discontinuing their top-of-the-line model...I'm glad I got a 60-gig while I could!

I would rather spend the money on it and possibly need that extra feature sometime later, than spend less and end up wanting that feature down the road.

Yeah, so you can buy USB stuff to add the functionality to the 20-gig. But when I have 2 controllers charging, a USB drive plugged in, and the PlayStation Eye plugged in as well....I just don't have room for USB extenders or USB peripherals that do what is already built in to the 60-gig.

Also....I don't want to siphon away more power from my PS3 by hooking up an extra 4-port USB hub.

This is a good move by Sony because if you haven't noticed the PS3 and PSP are consistently outselling PS2 meaning everyone who wanted a PS2 already got one and so the 40GB non backwards compatible PS3 is not an issue in Japan.

producing them a long time ago, it just took this long to sell them out.

They are lucky whatever new sku they get in japan will probably come with a dualshock 3.

Korosuke3994d ago

according to the press release, they focus on the 40GB model...

RIPHDDVD3993d ago

and by top seller, i mean it will more than a million in a matter of 2-3 weeks

MY guess is they'll be coming out with either 120 Gig model or 160 gig model, or finally an 80 gig model in japan.

If they come out with 120/160 gig model, expect that as the next model to come over State side/Europe.
