Wii U, PlayStation 4, Xbox 720 Won’t Match Current Console Sales
The next generation of gaming consoles will fail to reach the same audience current machines have according to two market analysts, but game makers are already migrating to alternative platforms ensuring a bright future for the medium
(Next-Gen, Wii U)
Don't agree with that this gen has seen a lot of new people getting into gaming and I see them wanting to experience even better games on the new machines.
I agree with you. Plus the contents in this headline remain to be seen. We will let the sales and great or lack of great game experiences speak for themselves. This is jumping the gun a bit.
I see no reason why they should not sell more. I don't think todays gamers will stop gaming. Despite what has been said about games being for kid, video games are quite different and many appeal to adults of all ages. I also expect that Sony and M$ will court the casuals much earlier this time around. M$ for one will be huge in the Americas right out of the gate, this time around. Xbox live and Kinect will insure that they start with a huge retuning userbase.
I don't think so. I think it'll be less, but more due to the fact that we don't need another gen so soon. Games look great. Between the Xbox and 360/PS2 and PS3 we saw a huge graphical leap as well as a demand for systems that could show off all those shiny, HD tv's out there. Already, developers are saying it's not hardware that's holding them back, but resources when it comes to game visuals. A few have cautioned not to expect a huge graphical leap.
It's like VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. People loved DVD over VHS because the difference in picture and sound were huge. DVD versus Blu-ray didn't take off nearly as quickly because most found DVD's "good enough" and still do. The same is going to happen with this current gen of consoles versus next gen.
This I found odd though "Console and retail game sales have shrunk dramatically ever year since the recession.." I don't know about retail sales, and maybe they're only talking about the US but have they seen console sales? The Wii has fizzled but since 2008, 360 and PS3 sales have gone nowhere but up.
"We don't need another gen so soon" thats opinion based.
As for DVDs and Blu-rays, I will agree to some extent due to the smaller gap and expensive prices. However, the Blu-ray market is growing larger and the DVD makert is diminishing. Not as fast as I would like, but it still is.
You can't apply that to game consoles though. I'd say we saw a bigger graphical leap from PS1 to PS2 compared to PS2 to PS3. Besides, we have seen some fantastic looking games on current gen systems and thats by using 2004 tech. Imagine what results we could see with 2011/12 hardware?
If we use Apple products as an example, we see new iPhones and iPads being churned out on an annual basis, yet people still find the money to splash out on those things. Having 7-8 year gaps with game consoles is acceptable. Obviously they're different, but the principle is similar and I'm sure the PS4 and the next Xbox will sell just as well if they launch next year.
What population increase?Old people!Because new born children is decresing in the evolved countrys.Do your research. In every depression theres a decresing in new born childrens because of the lack of means to sustain them. Not to mention the great increase in the rate of divorce people. Some young people must take more time to read whats going on in the world today! Its not just games and colorfull fantasy!
An analyst's speculations don't make anything true. And, honestly, the probability of the casual gamers- those who mostly buy mobile games- becoming core gamers is higher than the chances that those same gamers will stay casual come next generation.
How do I know?
Easy: no core or hardcore gamer ever got that into it without first having a casual interest. Even if you've been gaming since you were three, even if you now put ten hours a day into gaming now, you started off a casual.
Now, there are some other factors, such as how the world is doing economically, but if mobile and social gaming affects core gaming in any way, it's because it acts as an entry point for people who aren't all that interested in games to find genres and styles they like and delve deeper into what gaming has for them.
I agree!First theres a time for everything, im starting by saying that im reaching my 40 birthday and i still play and intent do so for another couple of year, but thats me that born with a zx spectrum in my hands.Reason for my agreement on the subject ; first the quantity of new born childs is decresing in the so called evolved country's so less kids less sales, second technology is evolving at a faster rate and new devices with better options are going to appear on the market at faster rates and will drive many console consumers and the new generations of born childrens to adopt them rather than adopt a PS4 or a Durango or Wii-U,third and last of many i could enumerate Sony,M$,and Nintendo must acknowledge that with the rate technology is advancing 10 years cicles for releasing new hardware is just not feasible anymore.
Two market analysts make these ridiculous claims and it becomes worthy of a report? Please. I want to know where the numbers even came from.
Because I'm partial to Xbox Live's service, I sure as hell will be standing in line at midnight for the new Xbox, but I'll definitely be grabbing the next Playstation as soon as I can scrounge up the cash. Honestly, I can't wait to see what consoles can do next.
Not really a big fan of the hardware Nintendo's been putting on the shelves lately, though, so I don't buy their products. But hey, that's just me...
Because we all saw the graphics, the gimmicks, the games, the release date, the price tag, the price of the games, the consoles online, and the name of the future xbox and ps4 right? oh wait, no we don't. For all we know it could be a tablet.
This is a new low for analysts, predicting something that isn't even there lol
Wii – 94.97 million as of 31 December 2011 Xbox 360 – 65.8 million as of 12 January 2012 PlayStation 3 – 62 million as of 31 December 2011 easy peasy lemon squeezy...
No, they won't match current console sales, they will far exceed them. Now that people know the truth about Nintendo, they won't wast their money on their next THING. Most will purchase Microsoft's next machine, considering most of the Wii customers, ended up purchasing an Xbox 360 not long after they realized that the Wii was gimmicki garbage. The Sony faithful's will stay, ummmm faithful. I think we will see a longer fizzle out period for the current gen of consoles, considering alot of the final games for each respected machine, will provide great gaming experiences. This is all assuming that upon lauch of new hardware, will come a price drop of current generation hardware. One of the issues, is that the current generation machines are awesome and not everyone owns one. When there is a price drop, there will be a new slew of customers experiencing them for the 1st time. A rennaissance of sorts. This will hinder next gen console sales, not lack of interest. The next generation machines better kick the pants off of current gen, or there could be serious sales problems. Shame on hardware developers for making this generation of consoles so great.
This has to be the most biased, fact-less, fan driven comment! Quote: "The Sony faithful's will stay!" ok so that's why the PS2 dominated last gen and the ps3 couldn't sway half of those faithful's that the PS2 did during its time... I wonder if most of you here will drop console gaming all together if Nintendo ends up leading this generation as well? Could happen people, no one thought that the Wii was going to launch them where it did and the psp was suppose to crush the ds and now the vita is struggling to recapture the same base as the psp. Not to mention that both Sony and Microsoft are playing around with technology to limit or get rid of playing used games all together. Which will cut out renting games from Blockbuster or Gamefly, then you would have these 2 basically saying here Nintendo you can have it!
Oh yes it will. Believe me it will match and pass this gen of game sales. All you have to do is release it and advertise. If you don't believe me then you're a fool.
Social Network gaming? It's all good and fun. Angry Birds yaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy. Guess what? People will get sick of mobile phone and Ipad games, unless those games can get closer to offering experiences that well made console game can deliver. Do you want to know what happens when my Non gaming wife plays Angry Birds on her Ipad and I boot up Final Fantasy XIII? She shuts the Ipad off and says "Holy Crap!" "This is a game?""Are you really playing this?",she asks."This isn' a movie?",she questions. The bottom line is, at some point, all mobile phone and Ipad gamers are going to want to experience something bigger, and better. The mobile and social network games will stay around, but will eventually lose ground to the bigger market games, unless they can start creating experiences that rival the Gameplay, graphics, and story of some of the best console games. Phewwy to mobile gaming and farmville. Booooooooooooo.
Huge, bigger than console, more money being spent on software in this space than ps3/360/wii combined.
Why do you think MS and Sony are waiting so long to launch new consoles??
Because they know their market has shrunk by a GIANT margin.
it's not because 720p, jaggies, pop-in, screen tear and 10-29 frames per second are cutting edge to anyone except console only gamers. There are Ipad games that look better than 95% of console games.
PS3 and 360 are last gen, there just aren't any new consoles yet.
PC is already 2 gens beyond console, the gap is getting bigger.
its pretty tough to gauge where we'll be. I know I am most likely not getting wii u!! And i owned the wii. this gen surpassed last gen which ended with 200 million sold. this gen is atleast 230 million.
So there is a small chance it could sell less. But I doubt it. plenty of countries that are just now getting into gaming
Well I bought two 360s and a PS3 this gen and all the previous gens back to NES and Masterdrive, I bought at least 2 consoles.
Next-gen I'm buying one system and building a gaming PC because 95% of games are multiplat and 99% of the best games are multiplat so there's no point in owning them all anymore.
I agree that the new consoles wont sell so good like the current ones but for different reasons not for this bullsh1t this dude say, imo the biggest reason for bad sales will be if what I read about locked games on consoles in order to not be able to sell used games is true, if that sh1t is true then every company who decide to adapt that model must be prepared for crap sales.
I remember analyst forecast that the PS3 would destroy the 360 and Wii. They also forecast the Wii would have lowest sale because its not a HD console. They also predicted lower PS2-Xbox-Cube numbers because of Facebook games.
this gen has seen a lot of new people getting into gaming and I see them wanting to experience even better games on the new machines.
Rated E For Everyone
In all seriousness, I believe next-gen consoles will be about the same as this gen; maybe more due to natural population increase etc.

Its countries like japan, korea, and taiwan thats slowly decreasing due to lack of both newborns and immigration.
That's actually very true.

No it isnt in fact it might be quite easy
Xbox 360 – 65.8 million as of 12 January 2012
PlayStation 3 – 62 million as of 31 December 2011
easy peasy lemon squeezy...
Ipod/Ipad

I'm really starting to hate these negative articles in general...
