FIFA updates "not milking it," say EA Sports

The frequency of FIFA updates is as much about the art as it is the money, says a lead producer at EA Sports. (FIFA 12, PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)

Wow, EA must think people are REALLY stupid. A FIFA game is about art? LMAO! As if sports games are nothing but blatant cash ins for people who, for some reason or another, can't or won't actually go out and play the actual sport.

Look, you're definitely milking it. The fact that you had to come forth and talk about this shows that to be a fact. If you want to entertain people, that's fine, but don't microtransaction them to death while doing it.

I'm glad he used the movie analogy because now I can tear right into it. When actors come to do a sequel they are doing a whole new project. They don't share the same assets, the same scenery and the same writing.

A game like FIFA (or any of their other sports franchises) do share the same assets. They then optimize the engine, add a few tweaks, update the roster and call it a day. For the most part it's the same engine with the same commentary. What they should be doing is having a 2 or 3 year cycle which would actually give them enough time to revamp the game. They can still do annual roster updates and charge a small fee (like $10).

This is why companies like EA get so much hate-mail. They pretty much force the consumer to keep buying these games because of a few reasons. One is this is the only way to keep the teams up to date, two is EA takes down old servers so anyone wanting to keep the game is out of luck if they want to play online, and because everyone else knows this they too buy the newest game making the older one having no value.

I no longer buy these games on an annual basis. Spending $60 for a few tweaks and a roster update isn't enough for me and it may not be milking it but it sure isn't giving the consumer the best value.

Actually a movie can re use assets if they get the whole original cast. Hangover 1 & 2 were so similar.

its called supply on demand.

lets look at the real milking...

PS3 has had 11 different console versions out this gen
the 360 has had 8....just saying BRO.
i won't add PC because AMD,intel and Nvidia throw new hardware out every month and ill be the first to admit thats milking. thats coming from a PC fanboy.

just because your not into football doesn't mean that the millions who buy it are not. the game is about art..the art of football and the skill needed to beat your oponent. the game actually requires skill unlike most games today.

saying its for people who don't go out and play sport is a big statement my friend. WHATS NEXT people play COD because they can't get off there arse and go to war or people who play racing games can't be arsed going street racing. let me guess people who play street fighter are too lazy to go street fighting LOL.
people play games to wind down and relax. NOT to replace there active life....lol well maybe WoW players hehe i love you guys really.

Wow, someone sounds butt hurt about anyone talking down sports games. Consoles go through different versions to IMPROVE on themselves and sell cheaper. Do sports games? Nope. They update the roster and then call it a new game when it's not. That's how consoles and PC aren't hardware milking and sports games are software milking.

The game is not about art. Sports are not an art. And sports games require skill? Please. Don't kid yourself. Takes more skill to go out and play the actual sport than it does to beat someone at sports game. No one will ever look at a sports game an ever liken it to any form of art. The medium of video games is art, but sports games are just sports games. There is literally nothing artistic about it. They take real world locations and real world people and get them to play a sport only you're in control. Are you calling watching soccer on tv the same as attending an art gallery or a film festival or a music concert? Because it's not.

And wow, way to exaggerate what I was saying. Sports games are a cash in because people CAN go out and play sports. They don't need a video game to do it. If they choose not to go out and do it, there is a reason. Either they can't for some reason or they are too lazy to do it. Your only argument is that people play them to play as professionals in places in the world they can't visit or something along those lines. I didn't mean it to be an insulting way, but you just got butt hurt because someone dared to talk down what is likely your favorite genre of game and favorite series in that genre.

lol sports games are far from my fave genre of games,

using the words butt hurt makes you sound stupid so i won't say any more in case i confuse your poor little mind.

FIFA is for people who can't or won't go & play the actual sport lol. People play Fifa because it's the best sports game available by miles, and nobody holds a gun to our heads each year, we buy it because we like it. Watch how the Euro 2012 add on sells this week. I play Fifa & play real football. So by your logic people only play GT5 because they haven't got a Ferrari. By the way watching Barcelona play football is just a exciting as watching a concert to me & many other football fans, it's all about people's tastes.

Sure EA your not milking fifa. Just like your not milking Madden and college football. I swear between EA,activion, ubisoft, and capcom my coffie will never be without ever again

I buy a fifa game every two years. I get to see more improvements & spend less money. (still playing 11 & waiting for 13) All good.

Me too but I know it's going to be hard to resist buying FIFA 12 and getting the Euro DLC when the real comp starts.
