How Dead Space 3 Can Avoid Making Alien 3's Mistakes

1UP- "If (SPOILER WARNING) Dead Space 2's post-ending dialogue about "Marker Site 12" (END SPOILER) didn't already indicate that Dead Space 3 is likely on the way for you, then the various slips, sources, and rumors that have transpired since DS2's release should have clued you in. But is that good? If Dead Space was basically Alien, and Dead Space 2 was Aliens, will that that doom Dead Space 3 to be the uneven Alien 3?

Such a fate can be easily avoided. For one thing, Alien 3 was the product of numerous rewrites and extensive studio interference, all of which resulted in a mediocre hodgepodge of ideas both great and terrible. We're assuming the developers at Visceral have maintained a consistent vision for Dead Space 3 (an idea bolstered by the lack of rumors about personnel change at the studio). We're also assuming that, since it's basically the same team as the previous game, the team wouldn't make out-of-character/franchise decisions such as (Alien 3 spoilers, I guess, even though you've had 20 years) killing beloved characters the way Newt and Hicks died between films. Still, you never know, and we have a few ideas about how Dead Space 3 could be more Return of the King than Alien 3."

Am I the only person that thinks Alien 3 was good, and one of the best Alien films? Better than 2 and 4 at least, imo.

dead_eye4386d ago

I don't think it's as bad as people make out. It was just to different for some people.

Alien 3 was good, but it's nowhere near as good as the second film, lol.

VanillaBear4386d ago (Edited 4386d ago )

It's funny I've just had this discussion at college today in my Media Studies course

Alien 4 was better then 3.....Ripley seemed more like her transformed character which appeared in Aliens, she lost her edge in Alien 3.

I really wish they kept going with Ripleys character especialy with the mutated abilties she got in the 4th film after she had been cloned. Apparently they wanted to make her go up against differen't threats in spin off films. Even Sigourney Weaver said she would want to play the role again but then went onto say Fox wouldn't want an over 60 actress doing the action role

As for DS3, I would be more worried about it becoming like RE5.

Alien 4 was AWFUL!

If you watch the full extended version of Alien 3 it makes much more sense than the original cut, i watched it on bluray the other week and rather enjoyed it

dead_eye4385d ago

Sorry VanillaBear like hellsvacancy says it's awful.

And if you really wish they'd keep going with "spin offs" (which means never good) you kinda prove our point to.
Not having a go just very suspicious of your taste in movies.

Baka-akaB4386d ago (Edited 4386d ago )

Hardly alone . Hell it's the first time i hear it's "supposed to be bad" . Imo only Alien 4 is dreadful and horrible for the franchise .

"Ripley seemed more like her transformed character which appeared in Aliens, she lost her edge in Alien 3.

To each their own i guess . I feel that going toward a mutated and hybrid riplay is a clear mistake . It's too easy a cop out imo to simply ditch the humanity instead of keeping her grounded and the badass human she is supposed to be . And i didnt feel she was any less badass in Alien 3 just a sense of resignation and depression after all the crap following her .

Alien 4's version felt like a bad parody of a schwarzie character . There is difference between going "rambolina" as she joked , and full on crazy terminator meets the insipid "Species" Natasha Henstridge movies .

VanillaBear4386d ago (Edited 4386d ago )

Sorry but totaly disagree Alien 3 was worst then 4

Alein 4 had the horror and action that Alien 3 just totaly lacked.

I mean the massive movie mistake in 3 just went against what Alien was about. The facehugger attached it's self to Ripley then attatched it's self to the dog...EVEN THOUGH they're only supposed to latch themselfs to one host and then die.

Oh and the story was just horriable aswell, from the sequel which brought in more Aliens for Ripley to battle they went back to just the one.

" I feel that going toward a mutated and hybrid riplay is a clear mistake . It's too easy a cop out imo to simply ditch the humanity instead of keeping her grounded and the badass human she is supposed to be ."

But she had grown out of that by Alien 3, she wasn't scared of the Aliens anymore so it wouldn't of made a difference if she was "grounded" or not, she would of still taken them on.

The film took her character in a different direction to freshen things up, she became a part of the thing she feared the most, thus Ripley trying to accept her self as "one of them" while at the same time feeling emotion towards the Aliens since she was now a part of them. Ripley had one of those "They're monsters but I can't kill my own" dilemmas.

Oh and to also agree with Mr Tretton that Alien 3 is better then Aliens is laughable. The film was the best out of all of them.

EDIT:

Oh please the franchise was dead when Alien 3 came out

Baka-akaB4386d ago (Edited 4386d ago )

I never agreed that it's better than aliens . I just said i wasnt aware at any particular backlash against alien 3 , and felt it was good .

As for the rest we'll just have to agree to disagree . Alien 4 was garbage imo and almost a coffin nail to a serie that was till then excellent .

"But she had grown out of that by Alien 3, she wasn't scared of the Aliens anymore so it wouldn't of made a difference if she was "grounded" or not, she would of still taken them on. "

There is more to being human that just being afraid of those aliens . It just feel to easy basically turn her into a "supernatural being" to "freshen her up" . It doesnt feel fresh imo , it's contrived and a cop out . She was more than fine on a own without becoming a mutant .

To use an , i know lukewarm , analogy and example , it would be tantamount to super powering up batman for the heck of it . No need .

MysticStrummer4386d ago (Edited 4386d ago )

No Mr Tretton, you're not the only one. I liked Aliens 2 just fine but 4 was horrible and killed the franchise. The story was bad. The dialogue was bad. The acting was bad.

To much studio interference. If left to David Fincher I think Alien 3 would have been awesome.

I think I'm going to pass on dead space 3..the second game.. I didn't even get to finish it..I got bored playing it.

ChocalateDog2034386d ago

They really need to step up their game with Dead Space 3 if they want it to do well. The singleplayer for Dead Space 2 wasn't as great (although the characters were a lot better), just seemed like more of the same. Not to mention the broken multiplayer, one team of high rankers spamming Spitters won out every time. When Dead Space 3 does get announced, I'm really hoping for a completely new setting and some good changes.

Why Dead Space 3 Will Be the Hardest to Remake

If EA and Motive Studio plan on remaking all the main Dead Space entries, they have to change a lot of what made Dead Space 3 so divisive.

Simple, do not bother with a Dead Space 3 remake. Rather have a new entry for Dead Space.

myfathersbastard412d ago

Yeah I agree. Make a dead space 3, but have an original story/setting. They’ve proven they can do the game justice, and I think they could evolve 2 in a good direction, keeping a similar tone. I’d love s Dead Space 2 and 3 though. The remake was fantastic. Top tier remake, up there with RE2.

jznrpg412d ago

Remaking 3 would need to be a reworked and somewhat changed remake as 3 was flawed in most peoples eyes and the worst entry.

Ninver412d ago

It's the worst in the series.

Dead Space 3, A Ten Year Reunion

WTMG's Kyle Nicol:

"Was Dead Space 3 really that bad?

Well, it’s a complicated question. Dead Space 3 is undeniably the weakest of the trilogy. It’s a game that deviates so far from the original formula, that it throws a lot of what made Dead Space special in the first place out of the window. Although, where it does make up for it is one of the best cooperative shooters on the market, even after all this time. Do I recommend playing this game ten years later? Hell yes. But make sure your expectations are in the right place. It has a lot of problems that bring it down."
