IGN writes: Age of Conan was one of the few games here at CES 2008, being demoed at the Microsoft Games for Windows booth. On display were a few types of characters – a magical Demonologist and melee-focused character tossing spells and swinging axes at a few enemies. Funcom has implemented even more brutal fatalities into the game, including a melee slash where the enemy is run through with an axe and then nearly decapitated with a vicious neck-snap.
Though it wasn't on display, Funcom informed us that an updated graphics tech has been implemented into Age of Conan, called Cheetah 2, which they claim drastically improves framerates. This would certainly be good news considering the jittery, inconsistent frame rates we've seen at events past, and at the demo they showed at CES 2008. Also showed off was a video demonstrating their dynamic weather, wind, and water technology that in the video looked very impressive. You could see currents flowing and criss-crossing in streams, giving the environments more of a realistic look.
The game is currently in its beta testing stage on PC and set to release on March 25. Funcom wasn't able to say when the Xbox 360 version would come out, but it's still planned to be content identical.
