No wonder for the 'big discount'.
To be honest, simply no one texts that much on PSN.
I believe that most people have no qualm with using the control pad for texting. It's simple, fast & keyword history is a big help.
Others simply use a mic.

Now, what Sony CAN do, to better this product, is make an newer model with an easy to access screen (preferably touchscreen) & make it so that, whilst using said device, will allow you to directly text without going to XMB. This will allow faster texting & can even encourage more texting.

or others simply use a keyboard... like ive been doing since day one.

I agree.
There are enough decent options for texting. No 'real' need for an wireless keypad.
Sony would have promoted this during the 1st 2 years, during the PS3s' slightly unstabled era.

Indeed, it does work very well, I just feel that access to one keypad can cancel out the next (if keyboard works well, why get a keypad, & vice versa).

It would've been a bit cheesy, but Sony could've made it so that it's detrimental for you to have an wireless keypad for texting, period. If that was the case, it would definitely help the promotion/sales of the wireless keypad, because then, everyone would need one, guaranteed.

The keypad is worth it. If it's not buried somewhere, it makes sending msgs waaay faster. Also good for Home. The buttons are a bit small so there's a slight learning curve, but it works really good. Only downside is the bottom part that 'attaches' to the DS3 has broke once, super glued back, then again in a different part (should've been made stronger). So now it's just the type pad with the little bottom piece that has the PS button. It still works 100% though so don't let that worry you.

I just want some backlight.

You can do that if you have a Vita. You can sign into both and send and receive messages on the Vita while playing a game on the PS3.

Actually, the thing works pretty well. Anywhere you'd use the on-screen keyboard, the keypad works too. Admittedly, I don't text much on the PS3, but it's been a big help doing things like web browsing or making missions in Infamous 2.

I use it alot in "HOME" people always ask me if I have a keyboard, ...I answer very fast!

KrimsonKody2437d ago

Well, give me time to reply!
Lol.

I use the controllers' digital keypad, so texting can take an nice minute...
...or 2...

Just don't leave me dancing to Chain Swing (lost count of how many times that has happened)
Lol!

You can always tell when people don't have it lol

Keyboard player "Hey whats up!"

*A minute passes, the avatars go through waiting motions*

Controller Player "Hey, I'm good, how are you"

lol
