McDonald's boss: 'Games to blame for childhood obesity'

The chief executive of McDonald's UK has hit out at video games for being a major cause of the childhood obesity crisis.

Steve Easterbrook told The Times that the food and drinks industry shared responsibility for the issue with individuals and Government.

But he made special mention of the popularity of games – and said they have reduced the amount of time young people spend outdoors "burning off energy".

"The issue of obesity is complex and is absolutely one our society is facing, there's no denial about that," said Easterbrook. "But if you break it down I think there's an education piece: how can we better communicate to individuals the importance of a balanced diet and taking care of themselves? Then there's a lifestyle element: there's fewer green spaces and kids are sat home playing computer games on the TV when in the past they'd have been burning off energy outside."

don't blame mcdonald's for what other people chose to do, don't blame video games for what other people chose to do. nobody forced them to eat at mcdonald's, they chose to eat there. nobody forced them to play video games, they chose to play video games. and if they're too young, then who's at fault? the parents, the parents let the kid eat at mcdonald's, the parents paid for the kids meal at mcdonald's. the parents paid the kids for their video games.

now i know why the world is talking crap about america now, we no longer take responsiblity for our own actions, we now blame other people for our own problems. "hey, let's just sue mcdonald's or blame it on video games for what we chose to do, or what we let our children do."

don't go around blaming mcdonald's for causing all the obesity problems, because they didn't. instead you should be going around blaming those who are blaming mcdonald's for choosing to eat there, and for choosing to blame mcdonald's for their own problems.

but you miss somethig. you should be angry that micky D's pres would try to put blame on entertainment while his food is really horribly fatning and promotes laziness. bottom line tv has been making people lazy like he said not video games. like nintendo said they are competing with tv not neccissarily the other better consoles(sorry i had to say these kids would be watching the plethora of mindless tv if video games were not in existance, there is really no need for fuktards to blame gaming specifically. hello the problem started before gameing started becoming so popular. its just another form of entertainment.

Micky D's pres just made my "people who need to die for the betterment of society" list. i hope someone who will actualy do something AGREES!

anybody seen the the movie "super size me"?

Marceles3933d ago

lol yeah i was about to say that. I'm still waiting to see a movie of a skinny guy documenting his game playing time and starting to get fat. I will bring on the point that he's saying "childhood", like the kids aren't getting exercise...but McDonald's is the LAST company that should be pointing the finger.

WilliamRLBaker3933d ago

super size me is not an valid movie, because TA DA you can eat any food in excess and if you sit on ur ass your gonna gain weight...ect

The shulock or whatever his name guy didn't excise or do any sort of fat burning work, and then says OH HO! mc donalds does cause obseity and high blood preasure, and cholesterole....OF COURSE IT DOES! you ate it for every meal and didn't do squat just sat at home doing nothing!

Its just like the retarded british medical journal saying Wii games have no health or exercise value yet phyiscal therapists here in the US are finding them a god send, you can take any workout and refine it down to its most basic elements and make it not work.

IF you sit there and eat most any thing in excess and do nothing to burn off those polutants that...ARE IN EVERY THING in our world today then your gonna have problems.

lynx1halo3933d ago (Edited 3933d ago )

In that some kids simply dont know how to put the controller down for a little bit, constantly staying inside, hardly getting exercise, which can attribute to obesity .......

anyone who cant see how this could also affect children is blind to the TRUTH

ban fans3933d ago

You tell your child to shut it off and go outside and play. Just like you don't take your child to McDonald's every day just because you don't feel like cooking. Yes, sitting around all day doing nothing but playing video games and eating cheese burgers will lead to obesity, that's true, but take some self responsibility. Stop the blame game.

And Marceles is spot on - McDonald's is the last company that should be pointing fingers.
