Kinect Star Wars fans ignore reviews - there's a place for average in gaming

Many may have scoffed at Kinect Star Wars with its mediocre review scores and that fun but chilling dance mode, but the week one estimated figures suggest that mediocre with a franchise attached can equal sales. (Kinect Star Wars, PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)

There's been so much advertising for this game I'm surprised it hasn't sold more.

As for average games in gaming. Well we need them so the triple A games look better.

Yea 56% is a F.....Star Wars has failed the ratings game

Average to Msxbox-world.....when it's a 360 exclusive. Especially if it's a Kinect game.

I'll bet they lost money on it between development costs and the TV ads that come on every 10 minutes on every station I watch (TruTV, A&E, cartoon network, TBS, comedy central, etc).

I'm still holding out for the demo myself, but it still looks like relative fun, just not convinced it's anywhere near as good as it could, or should have been.

"there's a place for average in gaming"

It's called the casual market.

By the way, I have no idea why you have disagrees.
I'm flabbergasted. I didn't think this game would reach 100,000 sales LIFETIME lol. But I guess there is a market for stuff like this. Bout to go look up some vids of people doing the han solo dance haha.

Of course there is I mean the advert makes it look amazing to the average gamer. Only real gamers can see what its really like. Star wars on rails. Saying that hardcore star wars fans may still pick it up.

"the advert makes it look amazing to the average gamer."

Exactly. I think people forget that one of the highest selling games this gen is Wii fit which really isn't a game in my opinion at least.

Core gamers aren't buying it. It's the casuals that are buying it, thus the Kinect Star Wars sales.

To see what its really like you need to play it for yourself. For instance the whole on rails thing is so dismissive, and is thrown around to casually.

The games Jedi Destiny mode technically isnt on rails but I understand why people say that and thats OK but on rails should not be linked to bad game, the game was designed and the on rails style fit what the designers wanted to get across and its design right for what it is suppose to be.

Star Wars Kinect is an Action game, not a role playing game with levels and item, or and adventure game with branching paths and things to discover and boxes to open, or a strategy game where you need to hide or gain a safe and tactical position. No it is an action game, the objective is enemies here, get rid of them best way you can with the tools given.

You can be clever and try to clear areas with the force as your dominant weapon or go straight sabre, you can be athletic and jump over and around enemies all day or subtle and rely on your sabre defensive skills. On rails or whatever you want to call it doesnt matter because once you understand what you need to do and how to do it, it works.

This probably sounds like complete different game from what the reviewers described but everything I said is true, and dont even get me started on how bad they screwed up the reviews for the Duels of Fate section.

We sell this game where I work and it is the only title I have ever seen that is marked "Non Returnable" on the receipt. Keep in mind a opened computer is returnable within 15 days but if you buy Kinect Star Wars and open it, you're stuck with it.

That should tell you something.

I don't care about the so called reviews. I am a fan of Star Wars and this is a fun game.
edonus  +   432d ago
I am happy to see this. This is a big step for the industry. Most of the reviews I have seen for it where terrible and really just illustrated the culture of kinect hate that the gaming journalists have taken.
The reviewers misrepresented the game in away that could be considered a flat out lie. Most of them you could tell never really grasped the controls and didnt take the time out to learn. The biggest problem is that no one checked them for spreading these lies, and how easily the public accepted them. Star Wars kinect has excellent control and lots of diversity and playability and all of the technical victories of kinect gets trivialized by reviewers that didnt even want to play the game.
Kinect needs to build a new market and that will start once a game that has a central theme hits around million sales..

Oh please. That is all it probably will sell. And the week after no one will buy it. It amazes me how Kinect games are allowed such a wide margin of excuses and chances. If an triple AAA game made the type of scores and sold the way most Kinect games do it would be condemned forever in the gaming world. But with Kinect its 'It's okay, the critics must be lying, and everyone must be doing it wrong, and we don't have to wait to see if it will do as well the second week,I am buying it anyway' etc. etc. etc.

If UC3 even dropped below an 8 or only sold 300K the first week it would be 'I told you it was crap, Sony fanboys are so stupid, we told them it would fail and ND was a crap developer, we should wait until the second week to see if it continuous to sell ' but KSW can make 4s and 5s and sell below a million the first week and it' okay.*shakes head* This really is the most pathetic gaming gen I have ever experienced.

@ edonus. Yeah, I am sure that's it. All the people who said it was no good were lying. Just like all the people who said NG3 and Raccoon city were lying too. And for what purpose is that now? Let me give you some advice. Never listen to sales because they usually don't count all the returns people make when they find out what they really brought. Microsoft and friends would never report that in the final sales count

Kinect games allowed a large margin of excuses and chances... if that was the case we wouldnt be having this discussion. Kinect games get blasted sometimes justly sometimes grossly unfair and thats the problem.

All the reasoning about triple AAA titles and scores arent the issue. The issue is mis information and that is what leads to stagnant growth for kinect. With Kinect Star Wars the majority of the reviews told ppl things that were completely wrong, mis represented other things then totally left out other things. Understand I have the game so when they say something that is totally opposite of what I see I can say they are lying. If you ever read my comments blasting the reviews i'm not just giving opinions I am stating mechanical facts.

For example most of the reviews you read will say the Duels of Fate mode doesnt recognize their moves. The truth is there is a beam that goes up and down the sabre and you are suppose to attack when it touches where the weapons meet. None of the reviewers new this, you can go look at IGN, Gamespot, anyone any of them that you want and you will see them losing the clash and saying it didnt recognize me.... after you miss a few time it gets slower and easier and lets you pass. A skilled player can beat the enemy in under 2 minutes. You see them play they are fighting four like 4-5 minutes. This just one aspect of the game that the reviewers botched and its a bunch more. They are mis representing the product.

If they said they didnt like it because the graphics are inconsistent or they would have liked or customization or the lack of online play fine but when they are bashing it for things it does well they need to be checked. And look how easy ppl eat the negative information up without second guessing.

I hope KSW cracks 1 million because that will set up a sub genre that wont be constrained by the hatred surrounding kinect. And heres some advise the returns dont matter only the recorded sales. Thats what the devs look at to determine whether or not making a games for kinect would be a viable investment. I dont care about all the haters that miss out, that their loss but I do care when people that would enjoy these games are scared off by false reviews and mis information. That makes devs stay away and cuts down on the amount of games I get for kinect.

I think you have reality confused with the Internet, In the real world Kinect sells well and is well received by its target market.

Now here on N$G most of us grew up on core experiences and rather see a core star wars game that caters to us not the casual crowd.

I think blackburn is absolutely right, a core game would never get this many passes, PS3 games sell millions yet since COD is the highest selling game and they dont crack 10 mill they arent recognized.....theres definitely a double standard in gaming perception

It's presumed only core gamers will buy into this but i already have Kinect and enjoy it very much. It compliments the other side of gaming such as Halo, Gears, Bayonetta etc. Kinect to me is fun in the same way i really enjoy ipad. Gamers on forums represent just a section of the pie and in truth will continue to shrink

Just another form of elitism in the same way the pc crowd look down their nose at console owners, console owners at ipad, iphone etc. All a bit daft

There's room for all types of games and jumping around like a jerk for an hour or two is great fun unless that you think it's somehow childish to do so- and i'm almost 40

I know around 6 people people with xbox and three of these are enjoying what it offers. It definitely appeals and works well for plenty of folk. This particular game is appealing to them and myself in the same way other games will and wont appeal
