IGN: DS vs. PSP showdown - Which has the best games?

If you're in the market for a handheld gaming machine right now you face a hard decision. How do you choose between the N-Gage and the Neo Geo Pocket? Sorry, the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable. It's an interesting two horse race, simply because both systems are highly capable, and both have very distinct strengths and weaknesses. Rather than go into those – which IGN are sure you're well versed on anyway – IGN have decided to evaluate each system by the single most important factor: their games.

After all, it's not the tech specs or the name on the case that's important, it's the gameplay on offer.

PSP wins with custom firmware/emulators/POPS

mighty_douche5946d ago

...for me its got to be the PSP, many because of HOMEBREW allowing me to play any game on and console from PS1 backwards.

ravinash5946d ago (Edited 5946d ago )

I'm starting to put serious consideration for getting a PSP.
Kind of odd in the article they didn't do a conclusion... that was like number 1 rule when I had to write essays at school.

[EDIT] - Well I hope your happy now....I just got it on order with 3 games.

mighty_douche5946d ago

Then go read read read about Homebrew.

PS360WII5946d ago

Well if emulators are your thing DS does have them as well. In terms of games that you buy DS has the medal for that :)

mighty_douche5946d ago

Have you heard of the R4 REVOLUTION?? there are a few other brands but that the best i know of.

i URGE any DS owners to look into it. its worth every penny, i have a friend with over 100 games on his + video + themes.

PS360WII5946d ago

yea that's pretty slick what people make for these handhelds.

PSP I think is more user friendly in the homebrew arena though which is why more people like the PSP for emulators

Mario Kart DS - The Best Handheld Mario Kart

Mario Kart DS still plays a fine game of handheld Mario Kart more than 20 years after its initial release.

OtterX33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

I really liked the Mission Mode. They had you doing crazy stuff like driving backwards, or collecting all the collectibles as quick as you can between a litter of enemies.

They should add it to Mario Kart 9 for sure, along w online leaderboards for the mission stuff. That's how they could expand on the already excellent Mario Kart 8, bc track quality it's hard to imagine them getting much better beyond slightly tighter graphics and 4k on the Switch 2. Maybe more Diddy Kong Racing-esque adventure layout w more emphasis on boats and planes.

It's hard to say that Mario Kart DS is the best "handheld Mario Kart" though, bc Mario Kart 8 is handheld. It's definitely got some uniqueness that I appreciated. The 2 merged together would be amazing.

I don't think Mario Kart 8 (and Deluxe) rank too highly for me, personally. There's just not as much life in them.

MaxiPower9032d ago

Mario Kart Double Dash, MKDS and Super Mario Kart are the only three that are actually fun to play. Sure MK8 is pretty but its just that. It lacks the soul of double dash. the DS one controls really really well and the orignial with the feather power up is cool.

Mario Kart DS The Best Mario Kart.

Fixed it for you.

Number1TailzFan32d ago

Hard to disagree with that, really how can all the other games (especially after it) have less single player content?

DKR managed a better game on the 64 and Mario Kart gets away with literally the bare minimum all the time.

Am I missing something? It looks exactly the same, just higher resolution… Is this sarcasm?

specialguest298d ago

Yes, you're not observant if you think it looks exactly the same. It immediately appeared different to me from the start. Mario's 3D model will always be the same, so not much difference there. However, the animation they've given the Super Mario Wonder makes it look more like a CGI Mario animation where as the New Mario Bros game looks more like typical video game animation movements

__SteakDeck__298d ago

@specialguest Yeah those animations are insane.

FinalFantasyFanatic298d ago

You really didn't notice the difference? It's really obvious, I was surprised when I first saw the trailer.

"Am I missing something?"

Your glasses maybe?

Juancho51298d ago

This Mario game looks great, getting a switch for this and Mario RPG. CANT WAIT, TITS JACKED.

Profchaos298d ago

Yeah I liked how much more emotion could be conveyed through the new style at first glance I didn't see much difference but then rewatching the trailer I'm seeing more and more animations that remind me of the Mario artwork from the manual of smb3

Outlawzz298d ago

I hated the new super Mario bros Style. This new one seems a lot more expressive and less generic. I hope it's a good game

shinoff2183298d ago

I prefer the 2d Mario's. Me and my girl have played them all together and mario galaxy , Mario odyssey. The 2nd player option is extremely eh
