Paramount Denies Report It Will Drop Toshiba's HD DVD

By Andy Fixmer and John Liu

Jan. 8 (Bloomberg) - Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures denied a newspaper report that the studio is poised to follow Time Warner Inc. in abandoning Toshiba Corp.'s HD DVD technology.

"Paramount's current plan is to continue to support the HD DVD format," Brenda Ciccone, a spokeswoman for Paramount, said in an e-mail today.

Paramount can defect because a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp allows the studio to switch to Blu-ray if Warner Bros. dropped its support of HD DVD, the newspaper reported, citing unidentified people familiar with the plan.

Keisuke Ohmori, a spokeswoman for Tokyo-based Toshiba, said the report is speculative. Masayo Endo, a spokeswoman for Sony, declined to comment on the report.

Funny, Warner said the EXACT same words.

Either way, as much as I care about High-Definition movies (I'm a video/audiophile at heart), I wanna see this format war end because I'm sick of seeing this topic plaguing the main site now.

We'll see more article about it. the reaction, what will HD-DVD's future be if it still have one, etc.

I was about to say the same thing :-P

It will support Blu-ray again.

i.e., it will again support both formats.

Unless Paramount does not like money, it will have to support Blu-ray, and soon.

Probally right, but that will have a simalar effect. With paramount supporting BR again, the only reason to own a HDDVD player would be for the universal films (which as of late have been below par IMO), while every other film will be avaible on blu-ray

whoelse3994d ago

Na i know i think there will no messing as they know HD DVD is dead so why continue supporting the format. They will continue denying it until they do the deed, as did Warner etc. Expect the big announcement in the coming fortnight ;)

Mikey_Gee3995d ago

... give it up and go BR.

One movie I really miss now that my HD-DVD player is gone is Transformers. I would LOVE to see it on BR ...... SOON

Farsendor13995d ago

obviously they don't want to admit they are shaken up by the news that wb went blu exclusive.

No matter what happens, it seems Sony just can't sell consoles this generation. I'm serious.

Blu ray, whatnot. It doesn't matter. Gamers just want the best games at the best value and in my opinion, Sony has failed to deliver that.

Maybe when they change their mind and decide to make it worth it for people, maybe some PS3's will sell. But until then, they sit comfortably in 3rd place for their stupidity. With XBOX 360 fanboys still laughing at them and talking about their console hiding under another price drop, and just continuing to lay egg all over Sony's face.

Still fighting this stupid format war, like all gamers care about is movies. When all gamers care about is games.

that's all i have to say, lol.

BR is an advantage to gamers and movie buffs, and I cant deny , I'm both.

I Agree , the PS3 doesnt have gaming title numbers of the 360 yet ...
I have about 6 BR games and a few Download-able games , and with my choice so far, I am as happy as a PIG In SH-T !! More games doesent actually mean you play them all.

My mate has all 3 recent Systems, Wii, 360, PS3... And they all have their merits...

But dont discount the PS3. The 360 had the head start on Sonys Console... This maybe a race, but I truly think Microsoft is a Sprinter.

360= Sprinter
PS3= Marathon Runner
Wii= The official at the finishing line.

Just remember , this is a long race. Let see whos got the Legs and gets over the line past the official...
