5 Things Sony Must Do To Stage a Comeback

InvestorPlace: Sony‘s (NYSE:SNE) new CEO is in an unenviable position. Kazuo Hirai has faced an uphill battle before, when his predecessor, Howard Stringer, called upon him to turn around the company’s money losing PlayStation division back in 2008.

Through cost cutting, outsourcing, and by jettisoning features such as backward-compatibility with the previous generation PS2, Hirai transformed the PS3 into a slimmer, cheaper, and profitable console — one of the few bright spots in Sony’s bottom line.

carry on selling more PS3s a year than 360s, continue supporting the Vita and carry on making money from the PS2 and the PSP. that's about it really. the Vita has just given the media something to chew on at the moment. it'll pass and all Sony fans know that

waltyftm2378d ago

Well said, you forgot to mention exclusive games in abundance and reliable hardware.

360GamerFG2378d ago

in 2011 X360 sold more than PS3. . .Worldwide.

MysticStrummer2378d ago

Take the total number of 360s sold, then divide the result by the number of years or months 360 has been on the market. Then, take the total number of PS3s sold, and divide that by the number of years or months PS3 has been on the market. Then, come back and tell us which one is selling faster. The math isn't hard.

LOGICWINS2378d ago

@Mystic Strummer- I took basic reading comprehension in elementary school. Maybe I can help you out here. Financial Gamer said nothing about which console sold faster, he just pointed out that the 360 outsold the PS3 in the most recent full year. Big difference.

I think Mystic's comment was meant to explain to Financial that his reply is not enough to refute what Gribble said.

i.e. this is how it went...

GRIBBLE: "carry on selling more PS3s a year than 360s"
FINANCIAL: "in 2011 X360 sold more than PS3. . .Worldwide. "

...AT THIS POINT...

Mystic basically explained that Gribble meant it as a yearly average THEREFORE a reply of a single year to refute would not make sense

Outside_ofthe_Box2378d ago (Edited 2378d ago )

***"I think Mystic's comment was meant to explain to Financial that his reply is not enough to refute what Gribble said."***

BINGO. Big emphasis on the words "not enough" and "refute."

FinancialGamer brought up the 2011 sales as if it's suppose to nullify Gribble's comment.

When MysticStrummer said:

***"Then, come back and tell us which one is selling faster."***

He was making a statement and not referring to FinancialGamer's comment.

Logic, you better not be lying about taking basic reading comprehension in elementary school. If it is true, I suggest you take it again in college.

@people above

well if you are gonna speak about that kind of stuff you could also take into account that the 360 is practically non-existent in Japan because of reasons beyond conventional gaming. US made stuff just dont do so well.

So yeah, you could say that the PS3 is almost at the same number as the 360 with 1 year less in the market, but you could also say that the 360 has more units with 1 less continent

So yeah..its all a matther of perspective... my own: i dont care i own all 3 consoles

besides i think the article is about sony as a whole, not the gaming division, as you know sony is going through some really troubling times these days

I understand where you're coming from.

However, I humbly disagree.

We just can't ignore Japan.

The same way I can't ignore bad grades from school subjects that pulls down my GPA ... just because my knowledge in that subject is almost non-existent.

--Onilink--2378d ago (Edited 2378d ago )

Well even microsoft basically has been ignoring Japan for a while now, a console that sells with luck 10k units per month just doesnt count.

Microsoft sells on 2 areas, Nintendo and Sony sell on 3, Japan being a major one.

And its not like MS didnt try, i remember their big push on JRPGs a couple of years ago and they still didnt do anything.

So yeah, MS had a 1 year head start, Sony and Nintendo have a 1 continent advantage as well

GraveLord2378d ago

Sold To Retailers. Shipped.
Vendido a tiendas. Shippiado.

Outside_ofthe_Box2378d ago (Edited 2378d ago )

"So yeah, MS had a 1 year head start, Sony and Nintendo have a 1 continent advantage as well"

What?

1 year head start and excluding japan because Microsoft isn't selling well there do not cancel each other out.

By taking japan out, you're taking actual units Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft has sold in japan.

If you take the 1 year head start in account you aren't excluding any units sold in any region.

--Onilink--2378d ago (Edited 2378d ago )

you people are really not getting my point, MS isnt selling in Japan mostly because cultural reasons, MS did try for several years to make an impact on the japanese market and it didnt work out, and it probably wont work out.

That means MS also has a serious disadvantage when competing with other consoles because, no mather what they do, they probably will never do well in Japan.

Its not like im just taking out Japan because i think so, its the fact that MS will probably always will be in a disadvantage when competing in Japan.

So like i said, true.. MS had a big advantage by releasing 1 year earlier and stealing a lot of Sony's PS2 base for a while, but at the same time, Sony and Nintendo have remained with a big advantage over MS because MS products dont sell well in Japan.

Its not even like a justification just for MS, because it actually applies for Sony as well, look at how bad the PSV is doing in Japan right now, the japanese market can be very picky/strange

While I agree with you, gaming, while it continues to play a large part in the company's holdings, is not Sony's primary's concern at the present.

Sony has lost essential foothold in their other markets, particularly the television business among other electronics. Hopefully, Kaz can properly take the reigns and guide the company to success in the future.

dark-hollow2378d ago

thats it? then its all fine and dandy?

what sickens me the most is that i love sony very much that i dont want to seem them losing profits year after year, but yet, the so claimed "fans" are brushing it off like no big deal!

its like telling your good old friend that got down with the sickness that its all right and fine! no need to cure your disease!

having the biggest profits lose in the companies history is BIG!
getting from more than 100 billion value back in the 2000s to 20 billion is big!

having FOUR years of constant losing of profits is no easy matter, and the talk about laying off 10000 employers is nothing to take easily.

because I LOVE SONY i want them to take the right steps to bounce up from this problem and get back on their feets.

i wouldnt be mad at them if they didnt go all bleeding edge tech with ps4 to make it cheaper, it worked for the ps2, you know, THE BEST SELLING CONSOLE OF ALL TIME! and totally crushed the "superior" xbox and gamecube.

i want them to start pricing their tvs, laptops etc. competitively instead of jacking up the prices when there are equal or better options for cheaper.

i want them to get back to their former glory, back in the day, nobody had anything on sony! their products were high quality and nobody minded paying more for the brand that was much more valuable back at the day.

the same sony that kicked the kings of video games themselves, nintendo, for two whole generations!

just get off with your "media" paranoia! this is serious for sony, and as a die hard fan of their products since the 90s, i really wish they get out of the red as soon as possible.

Comeback? i didnt realise they went anywhere

waltyftm2378d ago

They never did, just some crappy article trying to troll.

-Mika-2378d ago

They are in last place in the console market and the handheld market. The vita selling alot less than the 3ds. Games aren't as popular as their competitors. MS is going to soon take over the Europe market with hte kinect. Sony is in alot of trouble. With the ps4, they better have something unique and innovative to win back the usa and parts of europe back. If they are going to continue to follow behind instead of leading the market. They might as well quit now.

GribbleGrunger2378d ago

LOLOL!! sorry, but if you think MS are going to take over Europe with Kinect then i'm sorry to say that ranks as delusional.

you do know that the PS3 released 16 months after the 360 in Europe and now sits over 4 million in front? the 360 is 2.5 million in the lead. and even though they give Kinect bundles away, MS continue to be outsold on a weekly basis by Sony.

on reading those two paragraphs, your brain will automatically reroute the information, bypass common sense and automatically reach for the Sony fanboy card... you couldn't be further from the truth. i buy quality that lasts for years because i've never had that much money. that's the reason, not some silly company loyalty

Rainstorm812378d ago

Lol i like how people try to bash the VIta after being available in US and EU for a little under 2 months.....Oh yea remind me what was the 3DS doing two months in?

Getting the same doom and gloom as the Vita because of no Games and Ninty counteracted that with one of the earliest price drops ever.

As per the norm, recent successes give Gamers Amnesia....SMH

Oh by the way Ninty went from first (NES & SNES) to 3rd (Gamecube)and back to first (Wii)....what says Sony cant do it?

tiffac0082378d ago

The article forgot number 6 and that's to fire the "Japanese executives" that are too stubborn to transfer a large number of their production facility outside of Japan.

That's the main reason their TV is priced uncompetitively (aka more expensive) against the competition. The Yen ain't weakening they have to realize that.

HeavenlySnipes2378d ago

Make a full out AAA move game. I read a while back that Socery is a '6-7 hour long adventure' so I doubt that will do anything to spur large interest. We need like a full Move controlled RPG that plays like the Gladiator mode from Sports Champions. That or a horror game or something

MysticStrummer2378d ago

Yes. They should make a Demon's/Dark Souls style game that uses Move.

metsgaming2378d ago

Its really not that complicated the TV business is what is the problem. Fix it or drop it. Kaz is the man he can do it. Having him a CEO really looks like the future of the gaming division will be bright ! He even stated that gaming is one of sonys core business' and the core should be focused on.
