What Can Handheld Consoles Do To Survive Smartphone Gaming?

The era of the .99 cent games have pretty much stunted the sales of our beloved handheld consoles. We can easily see that handhelds like the 3DS and the Vita are not doing too well right now and much of the blame can be placed on the economy. Since people are not willing to dish out hundreds of dollars into another console and their 30$-40$ games when they have a smartphone with access to cheaper games like Angry Birds. So how can systems like the 3DS and the Vita keep their foot in the door before the smartphone crew completely kicks them out? Easy, if you cannot beat them, then join them.

This isn't even remotely true.

... also, comparisons between handheld-gaming and smartphone gaming are just ridiculous to begin with.

They are completely different markets.

With that I mean that pretty much everyone in the world has a phone, or wants a phone, and nowadays many seem to want a smartphone. They don't buy the product for the games, but once they have the product, they do like to have a couple of small games on there to waste time.

Handhelds are aimed at GAMERS, so it's a market that buys these product FOR THE GAMES. This means they are looking for a different kind of game than those with a smart phone.

Edit: ofcourse, there's always SOME overlap between these two markets, simply because gamers also own phones.

A combination of the cheap games on steam plus mobile gaming is going to hurt console gaming sales. Unless something like uncharted 4 or Gears 4 comes out, its going to be very quiet on the other side of the river.

Care to try that again? This time, with the complete picture, instead of seeing only what you want to see?

While there are plenty of games available on PC only, I can also list a slew of titles I can only get on my PS3 or Vita, as well as on other consoles and handhelds. Good luck, for example, playing Pokemon Black and White 2 on anything but a DS(or 3DS).

Mobile gaming has ZERO effect on home consoles, and PERHAPS slightly more effect on handhelds from ignorant people who think there's some comparison to be made. Need I mention the lack of proper physical controls? Too late, just did.

As we near the end of this generation, we're seeing console sales that have never before existed: during no other generation have all competitors exceeded 50 million systems. And this is CONCURRENT with the rise of mobile device "gaming," which is still years from being able to compare to the last generation of handhelds.

In other words: you're entirely too wrong.

who is getting paid to say this rubbish android gaming even if it grows 20 times the dedicated handheld market mean jack sh*t,as long as Nintendo sell 15/20 million units a year there buisness is safe,it's what Nintendo have been saying we watch our own game.

With the very first sentence being wide of the mark, I'm not even going to entertain clicking on this article.

Cheap phone games don't do anything for me, even as an avid gamer. If I do find myself with some free time and my phone, I'm usually browsing the internet.

Its been awhile since one of these silly posts

"We can easily see that handhelds like the 3DS are not doing too well right now..." "

So being the top system in the world right now, breaking sales records is not doing to well?
