Mass Effect 3, PS Vita weren't enough to boost March's game sales, says Pachter

Gamasutra- Retail software sales in the U.S. fell by nearly a quarter last month, while hardware sales dropped by a third despite the recent debuts of Mass Effect 3 and Sony's PS Vita handheld, according to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.

He predicts The NPD Group, which delivers its data for March's game sales on Thursday, will report that retail software sales in the U.S. fell for the fourth consecutive month. Pachter says the game industry didn't have enough big releases, in a business that he believes is becoming increasingly hit-driven.

"PS Vita, in February, the analyst predicts it sold only 125,000 systems in March, which he says is "below our expectations."

Their expectations (Patcher and Wedbum)? I'm sure Sony would be happy if the Vita really sold 125,000 in March. It doesn't have to do 3DS numbers to be considered successful in their eyes (It's still priced at $250 anyway). Sad to hear that everything else might have still dropped (game sales) in the US though.

Kaz said they expect to sell 12 million Vitas this year.. Hard to hit 12 million when they are selling that slowly. It is a very bad thing for Sony. If they have to drop the price it will create hundreds of millions less in revenue than they were expecting. And they already have problems with their stock. They didn't need that. They need to drop the price sooner rather than later and reduce cost.

Patcher is usually wrong so it will probably sell even lower

NYC_Gamer2055d ago

Well, people can't afford to spend tons of money right now.

Yeah, the US and UK hardware/software sales have been dropping a lot as of lately (for all consoles). Maybe a price cut really is needed.

@ Logic

Man, you really want consoles and handhelds to die don't you? You've been preaching that "mobile gaming will take over" stuff alot recently. I don't know about casuals, but I want to be able to play 10-12 hour games with great control.

Rainstorm812055d ago

Your right, games needs a price cut from 60$ to 40$, that would probably fix the problem ASAP, then people would be willing to take risks and customers would have more impulse purchases

@Raiinstorm

Exactly. I remember last gen/the ps1 days, I use to buy games(full price) that I thought might potentially be good. Nowadays I only buy games(full price) that I KNOW will be good. For example I plan on buying GTA5 day one no questions asked. But titles like AC3 and Last of US(despite being made by ND) I plan on waiting several days after it releases to decide on whether or not I should pay $60 for it or wait for the price to drop.

?????

Where'd all that come from? All I'm doing is providing facts. If to you that means that I want "consoles and handhelds to die"...then thats your issue.

LOGICWINS2055d ago

"Well, people can't afford to spend tons of money right now"

Yet IPAD 3 sales are through the roof. There has to be another factor here. People CAN afford to spend money when they believe that what they're getting is worth it.

Outside_ofthe_Box2055d ago (Edited 2055d ago )

***"There has to be another factor here"***

That other factor you speak of has to with the fact that the ipad does more than only playing games.

As for the Vita, I think that it needs more quality games. The Vita had a nice launch lineup, but those games don't a appeal to a wide variety of people.

LOL

So does the Vita. Aside from playing games, its a music player, video streaming device(Netflix), and a communications device(Skype).

Whats your point?

Outside_ofthe_Box2055d ago (Edited 2055d ago )

Yes I am well aware of the fact that the Vita can do more than just play games.

My point is that there are many reasons why someone would buy an ipad. A tablet can indeed be necessary for some people with regards to their job.

Gaming, on the other hand, is the MAIN reason why someone would buy a Vita and last I checked there aren't too many circumstances where a gaming handheld might be a necessity.

I didn't think I had to go into detail in order for you to understand what I meant.

Rainstorm812055d ago

Your second comment above doesnt use one shred of logic.... first and foremost the Vita is a gaming maching and the Ipad is a multipurpose device.

This shouldnt even have to be explained, really, if you cant see the difference you're beyond blind

and people say other industries are in bad shape............

the game industry worldwide is in dire shape

Ethereal2055d ago

This tends to happen as people recover from the holidays. This past holiday had SO many releases that people are still content playing games from last year. Hardware sales are interesting though, it may be time for another price drop across the board as many consumers are hearing rumors of a new console generation. I feel the industry will grow in a few months once heavy hitters release leading into the holidays. A little decrease is expected in our economic situation, there is no need to worry. It is still very healthy.

fatstarr2055d ago

Just more proof that my comments of the past were true.

if Nintendo couldn't sell a handheld in Q2 what makes Sony think they could.

KonaBro2055d ago

because the Vita is actually worth the price while the 3DS was Nintendo trying to price gouge people? Just a thought.

ronin4life2055d ago

I think there is more to it than that.(though I did agree with you, I don't think timing is the only factor at play here.)
And let us all remember: the 3ds did sell quite well within the same period(better than the vita.), just not as well as Nintendo wanted and officially planned it to.
