U.S. Navy hires hackers to design spy tools for gaming consoles

HardwareLust: On Saturday, we told you about the US Government’s plan to hack into your gaming console to monitor terrorist activity. Who better to figure out exactly how to accomplish that than hackers? Yep, the U.S. Navy, who awarded the contract to Obscure Technologies, is hiring hackers to accomplish a whole slew of interesting objectives on the Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. (Industry, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)

The console manufacturer that
adheres to these "spy tools" are committing Reputational financial suicide.

Well, its not like im a secret Al-Qaida spy plotting to blow up stuff. I've got nothing to hide.
slayorofgods  +   894d ago
........because we all know how Al-Qaida depends on gaming consoles to carry out their terrorist activities.
GanjaMan  +   894d ago
Yh but they wont tell u that they have these spy tools on consoles, it looks like everywhere we now go or things we use is another way for the hierarchy to watch us.

new world order is coming (infact its started and there are signs already), the future looks bleak!

this will never pass any "LAW" besides where has any terrorist used a ps3 360 or Wii to use it as a terrorist mobile Machine? can it launch missiles or war heads "NO" i highly doubt it can it be used to spy on others Uh "NO" the space satellites would be a more useful way to spy on terrorist because you can't shoot at it nor can you launch a missile high enough to shoot it down witch means a better way to "SPY" then a console because if this is true then its an invation of privacy of others by all accounts this should be "OUTLAWED" to spy on everyday people who are not a terrorist.

You do know that laws can be passed without public knowledge right? Just because it's wrong doesn't mean the US government won't do it.
BlackRock  +   894d ago
that's why they are people fighting for freedom one such i can think of is http://demandprogress.org/
killyourfm  +   894d ago
...and what's your argument for the Patriot Act?
BlackRock  +   894d ago
http://demandprogress.org/ fights all the bills witch the Government try's to pass remember SOPA & PIPA well it wasn't the Government that killed it, it was the people of America and others from UK France US Canada even the Germans were in on the fight against them..

Freedom of speech in UK is getting beyond just look at some of the arrest due to facebook n twitter even tho the comment was out of order
tigertron  +   894d ago
Not to mention the fact that our UK government is selling surveillance technology to oppressive regimes.

It wouldn't surprise me if Cameron allowed consoles to be hacked.
OhReginald  +   894d ago
If you are not doing any illegal you have nothing to worry about.
rdgneoz3  +   894d ago
Yet they can still say they're just checking to make sure you're not, and go through all your private stuff in the process. Do you not care if they look private conversations between you and your family/friends?

I'm not doing anything illegal, but I still don't want the f***ers to go through my sh!t.
OhReginald  +   894d ago
what are you hiding in your folders? child pornography perhaps?

Like I said, if you are not doing anything illegal, you have NOTHING to worry about.
Liquid_Ocelot  +   894d ago
@OhReginald

How fucking immature, Jesus. My privacy is is exactly that, private! Fuck them, there's no reason for them to be snooping around people's stuff.
I thought there was a law that said the US couldn't spy on themselves? They would trade "intel" with the British
tigertron  +   894d ago
So you'd be cool with me just walking into your home and rummaging through your stuff? I wouldn't, so why would you be cool if strangers went looking through your personal stuff?
SneeringImperialist  +   894d ago
Shut up, you ignorant troll.
outlawlife  +   894d ago
people act like they can't see anything anyone does on game consoles already

if the general public had any idea how many "ins" a company has into a console or a phone they'd probably piss themselves
Sarobi  +   894d ago
It kind of feels like we're slowly being caged..hmm
