Wii U "competitive position has deteriorated"

Wii U will launch later this year (one rumored date points to November 18) and Nintendo is hoping to make a big splash with the system this year at E3 in June. Many questions about the console's capabilities still linger, however, and one analyst in Japan is not too optimistic about Wii U's long-term prospects.

Wii-U garnered interest across the gaming industry for it's next generation advertisements and intriguing design of their new controller when it was announced at E3 last year.

Things have changed within those 12 months and the truth has finally been revealed. In Dark Sniper's humble opinion, Nintendo's "next-generation" console will launch with the Nintendo loyalists obviously being first in line to purchase their new product. Which is perfectly fine. But the market that they're aiming for is not there.

Nintendo has this idea that it's still 2006. When the Wii was launched, Nintendo was well aware that they were giving the market a brand new remote controller updated with slightly improved Gamecube graphics and called it a day. While other competitors were selling their systems at a loss, Nintendo gained profit on their Wii console sales. The reason being is because Nintendo sold the Wii at a higher price than it took to manufacture the console itself.

Dark Sniper reminds you that it is 2012 and Nintendo is trying the same exact business structure AGAIN. The difference is that the current generation of consoles have a strong establishment in the common household. The casual market that Nintendo needs for their next system to be successful is not there anymore. Releasing a "next-generation" console with graphics inferior to both PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360 is unacceptable by today's standards. Which makes sense as to why analysts believe that the Wii-U is deteriorating in terms of consumer and developer interest.

Furthermore, if the rumors are true. Nintendo will be launching the Wii-U dead on arrival if third-party companies such as Activision are not supporting them. Call of Duty is a billion dollar IP and it will hurt Nintendo more than it would help them by not having it on their platform.

Dark Sniper remembers what happened with Sega after Electronic Arts refused to support the Dreamcast. Hopefully Nintendo will reach out to third parties and assist them with development on their new console.

The combination of third party support and exclusives is the key to winning next generation. Both are imperative to next gen success. We will have more knowledge after E3 to see if the Wii-U will be able to swim the sharks, or drown in misery.

Do you seriously have to talk in third person the whole time? It's just about the most egocentric thing possible.

But in reference to your actual post, where did you get that the wii is weaker than the PS3/360? It was proved ages ago that it has about 6 times the power of the current consoles. Including a Power7 processor which alone will put it ahead of the current gen. All good sources are saying its more powerful. All sources which can't be named are saying it's weaker. You seriously going to believe a nameless person over many different developers?

dark-hollow2082d ago

I can't wait till e3 arrives when the wii turn actually to be quite powerful and you all will look like fools.

Dark112082d ago

What if sony/ms announce their next gen consoles
who will look like fool?

yep it is Nintendo.

dark-hollow2082d ago

MS? The one who want to chase the casual crowd?
Or Sony? Who said they won't go bleeding edge tech this time?

Admit it, all three companies have equal chance or releasing the weakest hardware.

shackdaddy2082d ago

@Dark Sony and MS already announced like three times this year that there are no plans to announce their next console at E3.

"1. Wii U GPU is less powerful than Xbox360/PS3 according to developers, which means it has no edge besides the tablet interface to attract core users. Initial third-party titles are likely to be only ports from Xbox360/PS3 titles. A bundled WiiSports/Mario title may help initial sales beat Wii launch, but Wii was severely production-constrained and the surprise factor from Wii U is less."

- According to developers the GPU is also more powerful than 360/PS3, so which is true? Its pretty likely that the initial titles will be ports, but I doubt they would be run of the mill. I mean, there would have to be some sort of tablet integration I would think, which would add different options and or experiences/features. Could broaden up the choice a bit when picking up a 3rd party title. Maybe Nintendo might implement some sort of trophy/achievement system as well? That would be cool.

"2. iPad with its retina display shows where Apple is taking its 4 screen infrastructure, leaving Wii U less connected and less relevant. The GPU processing power for handsets is reaching consoles such that we think core gamers have no interest in buying into the Wii U. Apple might add in a controller to its line-up to be more attractive to core users. MocoSpace survey shows that 96% of gamers like to play their games at home, and with a better infrastructure we think iOS will be able to deliver a single game experience across four screens that Nintendo cannot."

- That's great and all for Apple, but were talking about video games here. Apple isn't even in the console market. They just supply the app store, via the Ipad. Its not like they are actually churning out full fledged, in depth, single player and multiplayer games. I like some of the games offered, but its not that same. Not even close. They both have tablets, but it would come down to software in the end. No one will be picking up the Ipad based on the sole decision that it is better than a Wiiu/PS4/720. "Welp, I bought the new Ipad, no Mario/Uncharted/Halo for me." Yah, not gonna happen.

"3. Wii U will have 1-year window to gain installed base before PS4 (Orbis) and then Xbox Durango launch in late 2013. At that point, the core gamer that Nintendo is after for the first time will have no interest in Wii U. We understand that Activision has no plans to support Wii U, which means the biggest selling title of Call of Duty will be missing; Konami is also planning minimal support."

- Who said people would be disinterested when PS4/720 launches? I mean, why do I have to choose? Maybe some people would like to wait a bit or buy all 3? Consoles usually sell strong well into their lifetime as the gaming libraries expand, prices drop and bundles/upgraded SKUs become available. Its not like it would be the end of the line within a one year time frame. Lastly, Activision will be releasing every single COD game on the Wiiu, you have to be kidding yourself to think they wont.

If you happen to be reading this Macquarie Capital Securities, I would be interested in starting with you're company as soon as possible. I could be a much more viable and competent analyst. Feel free to contact me with salary information.

You forgot to mention that this article outright LIED about Activision not supporting the Wii U. Activision already stated that they will support the Wii U.

Anyone who believes this article at face value is a fucking moron.

Indigo1232082d ago

best to ignore analysts, they no less than janitors when it comes to gaming

Khordchange2082d ago

How can anyone make a prediction when none of us know jack s*** about it?

Knushwood Butt2082d ago

Pretty sure that fits the definition of a prediction just fine.

PopRocks3592082d ago

Predictions should be educated guesses, not mental leaps of faith. If you don't know anything about what you're predicting then don't make a prediction at all.

When you ASSUME, you make an ASS out of U and ME.

Knushwood Butt2082d ago

An assumption is not the same thing as a prediction.

It wasn't me that wrote the dictionary..

Ness-Psi2082d ago

I swear these website are making shit up, just because there has been no official WiiU news for a while. it's like their all got cabin fever or something.
