Story modes in fighting games DO matter

Mortal Kombat 9 did it very well. No reason why others can't

The Street Fighter series has always had a woeful story even though there is so much potential to get it right!

a story in fighting game is equivalent to those in racing games! they don't really have the weight because the game genre itself makes people don't really pay attention. for fighting and racing games, if the control is good, the game is good, end of story!

Battle Fantasia had an interesting take....it was like a jrpg cut scene between fights...I thought it was a cool idea executed badly.

That's an excellent case for why story mode is irrelevant. The game itself is terrible.

NGL, the main reason I bought Mortal Kombat 9 was because I heard that the story was good. No regrets. By the end of it, I was really impressed by the plot and invested in the characters.

Arc Systems have also did a great job with story modes in fighters like Guilty Gear XX and BlazBlue. King Of Fighters XIII have also shown that SNK is now taking their story mode more seriously as well...

Blazblue, Rival Schools and MK9 did a good enough job here. I hate how Capcom doesn't put in the effort at all (after RS). It's not 1994 any more! You can't just have Ryu and Sagat say "It's you! Let's fight and stuff!" followed by a few lines of text saying "Ryu goes a'wanderin' and trains some more, the end" and call it story.

No one is saying it shouldnt be there . Not with example like Blazblue , mk , past soul calibur titles , and like mentioned rival schools , around .

However it shouldnt be the priority , and taking that much points away from some game , when some others can't even get online and more important modes right .

As for articles like this , it's highly annoying , while MK9 did a great job , that they keep pretending MK9 is the kickstarters of fighting games with plots . Stuff like Blazblue did happens before .

And while doing it , Blazblue had no shortage of modes , and actually no online issues , unlike MK9 .

SCV deserves flak for its story mode , but it still featured a stellar lobby system and truly solid online experience ... unlike mk9 .

Plenty of people have actually complained about the online in SFXT. The weird sound issues that make the whole thing sound terrible when you play online are really annoying. Additionally, GiantBomb's reviewer stated that at times SFXT didn't feel right online due to some control issues that occurred.

And I'm not saying story mode should be THE priority, but it should be a fully realized mode instead of a tacked on feature. Stuff that's just there sometimes brings a game down as opposed to leaving said content out entirely.

And when you think about how interesting a true story mode with characters from Street Fighter and Tekken would have been, it really is absurd that Capcom didn't even try.

I know about SFxT 's online issue , and it's hardly the title i had in mind for my comment . Hell if anything SFxT is the absolute worse i've ever seen story mode wise .

When i saw it , i felt "wow if you're going to do that sort of crap , why bother having a story at all ? " . Silliness of it , and not even in a fun and campy way , makes you question the purpose of the story mode's intro , with the whole pandora meteor newsflash , or it silly and pointless text epilogue .

Anyway and however , like i said , for a few title , the press has been in a craze and over obsessed with mk's story mode , while failing to even notice how well or not some more important features work . Mk9 obviously is very well done , great even if you're a fan , but the game was in no way perfect all around , starting with its online pre and post patching .

Not everyone did , but when some big outlets waste a whole page lamenting on SCV's rushed and poorly done storymode , and got one single line on the excellent online , while dropping tons of factual gameplay errors .. it's not surprising the Fighting Games communities usually chuckles at mainstream sites reviewing fighting games .

nice article, fighting games should have a solid story mode like mortal kombat 9, i hope that the street fighter franchise adopts it. the tekken.. well they have a their own way of story mode (tekken force) in other games there were also story modes like super smash bro. and FF: dissidia. but thus far mk9 has the solid and well done story mode

No they don't. If they did then people wouldn't spoil bosses and such before release. Story NEVER matters in a fighting game regardless of how it's presented.

i dont think MK's story was very good. the presenation was ok but still was blah, Blazblues story is awesome though.

Soulcal 5's was good till namco didnt let project soul finish it -_-. only 1/4 of the full story...seriously

I would say balance comes way before story in a fighting game. That's where MK9 failed.
