Core gamers have so far been too “conservative” to engage with Kinect, but the situation will change over time, says Frontier’s David Braben.
Biggest fallacy in the video gaming blogsphere and beyond is that 360 core gamers dont already own Kinect. Look on Live and EVERY owner I know or happen to see that owns KInect owns Halo, Gears, Call of Duty, Fable, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls etc. THESE are the 360 core gamers... Just because Kinect isnt for everyone absolutely does not mean that there hasnt been core adoption. The numbers dont lie..if you have 40 million who are on live and Kinect reach close to half of those it pretty much is safe to say that millions of those are amongst core demographic. It's the sme that goes for the Wii. A zillion of us own Wiis, but that doesnt mean we arent core gamers. The device isnt even close to being a year and a half old yet. If developrs create more core experiences, which they are, then you will see more core gamers play them..it's that simple. Evil
You can't base the whole on your own experiences. I know you're going to say you're not, but that's what you just said. "Look on Live and EVERY owner I know or happen to see that owns KInect owns Halo, Gears, Call of Duty, Fable, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls etc. " But now you have to ask how that relates to the total numbers and how many people are actually using it. I don't like to get into the whole core versus the world argument, but it's clear who Kinect is pushed on, and that's why I think its crap, just like PlayStation Move and the Wii. The tech is great, but it doesn't bring anything I want to a game. It actually makes it more cumbersome and will never have the precision or options as a controller. All of the 'gore's games that are Kinect enabled just use it as an insignificant accessory. You're not missing anything without it. In order for these motion controllers to grab the core audience, they need games built specifically for it from the ground up, while still bringing the same experience that we're used to, and I don't see it happening.
'You can't base the whole on your own experiences. I know you're going to say you're not, but that's what you just said.' Nope not JUST my experiences... I caveated the Kinect user I happen to see as well. See what these articles and people like you don't do is actually look at the leaderboards for every Kinect game on Live. And what you will see is 360 owners who not only are outting in HOURS on games like Kinect Sports and Dance Central, but that they own some or ALL of the major CORE games that are on the 360. Guess what that means..CORE 360 gamers own and play Kinect. Kinect is NOWHERE near what the Wii's situation is in. Kinect is still apart of the 360. Core gamers arent spending all there money buying every Kinect game out there. Instead they are buying the core games like Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect 3 (which uses Kinect, Halo Reach, Gears of War 3,MW3.. But when they want to have fun with family or friends they will purchase Kinect Sports or L Sports Season 2 etc. That's why these games are selling over 3 million copies. When some high profile retail games havent reached those numbers on the 360. Regardless of how YOU feel about Kinect means absolutely nothing. It's not for everyone, but again the FACT is core 360 gamers own Kinect. Evil
What do you mean 'people like me?' Gamers? Of course I don't look at the leaderboards for every Kinect game on Live lol what purpose could I possibly have for doing that? But are you to have me believe that you sat and did your own research, and you have enough data to come to the conclusion that..what, exactly? Because I never said that no 'core' gamers are into motion gaming, rather I don't believe the core market had embraced it the way they want, or would lead you to believe. These things sell off hype initially, and you said yourself that Kinect hasn't been around very long. This is exactly why it's too soon to say whether or not core gamers care about this thing either way, but it is clear that it doesn't have core games available for it, not one. It's just been force fed into core games that would exist with or without Kinect's existence. Your last bit about playing with family is exactly my point though. Those types of games sell that much because the hardcore audience in any market in question is minimal next to the whole. But none of us knows who is playing what and how much they're doing it.
its not going to change over time
I consider myself a core gamer, the problem with Kinect isn't that it's a different way of controlling games, the problem is that is just doesn't work controlling core games. Kinect tech is just too limited and unresponsive to control anything but the most basic control scheme.
There just aren't any good kinect games other than dance central....and drunk kinect sports lol
I don't have Kinect and will not be getting one so count me as one of those that won't change.
1. Core gamers play games for many hours at a time. Kinect prevents most gamers from playing for 6+ hours at a time. Has anyone ever had a 20+ hour kinect gaming session? (I would collapse from exaustion) 2. Core gamers reqire accurate controls. Kinect doesn't have accurate enough controls. These Kinect developers should just worry about pleasing the casual market, because 99% of Core gamers arent going to dedicate their gaming to Motion controlled games.
@Lou-Cipher, exactly! Kinect will never be all that cause we would break our backs playing games. Kinect also makes playing games less immersive, it distracts and the effort you have to put in to decently control a core game is way too energy inefficient. It is too much about the controls and we're already past that. It's about the games and immersion, Kinect is just about the body control not about playing 6 hours on end and enjoying ur-self. If u want to do a body workout go outside and do some sports. Keep Kinect for the casuals cause it will never work.
I've said it before and I'll say it again.. give core gamers a reason to adopt kinect and they will. Simply put it's blatantly obvious who Microsoft are aiming Kinect at.. even rise of nightmares was marketed as a teen game. If that isn't enough proof just look at the depressing Star Wars kinect game advert shown at E3.. now there is a game that could potentially bring in a mature core audience but instead they market it in a way which makes it look like a children's toy. Also comparing people's perception of kinect to goldeneye.. lol just lol.
it will change when the games and technology don't suck as much. don't blame gamers for wanting new tech to actually improve the experience. this whole "better with kinect" crap on every kinect game should be removed... just because you say something on a box doesnt make it true. kinect gives us iphone level of depth in games. as far as i am concerned kinect is a beta for something that actually works next gen BTW i have kinect... and it hasn't been plugged in for over 6 months
Im hopeing that the DBZ kinect game and ryse can crack open some trust in kinect. Honestly its a great peice of tech that if worked with and givin alot of effort to get everything working right can pull off some pretty amazing things. I always bring this up but theres already video of people useing kinect to play skyrim, dead island, bulletstorm and street fighter it can do hardcore it just needs some developers who can really put their all into a project around the device instead of just putting stuff in just to ship the thing out and get it over with.
Kinect is cool and a great device for apps and a few games. At least kinect is a success, unlike that other thing no one buys.
Kinect Is here to stay as ms has stood behind it. Move is moving on out and I will be surprised if it lasts on the ps4.
