Chris Buffa (Modojo): Sega's portable system, the Game Gear, played host to several Sonic titles, chief among them Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble, a 1994 platformer the company re-released on the 3DS eShop for $4.99.
"Despite the greater push towards the 16-bit releases that existed at that earlier point in history, the 8-bit Sonic titles are still seen as having merit by a number of fans. Of all the titles they could've put out right away to initiate the Game Gear's presence on the eShop, it's interesting that Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble is the first one to fly out of the gate. Instead of resorting to the Game Gear versions of Sonic's first two games or even this game's prequel, Sonic Chaos, they settled on what arguably can be seen as one of the better entries available for the Game Gear. But is that saying a whole lot?" -- Wiiloveit.com
Is this game a blast from the past, or does its age show?
DHGF: Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble rises up from the Game Gear ashes to remind us how fun it is to play a Sonic title in 2D and on the go. While not a particularly stand out entry in the franchise as a whole, it’s a fun romp through familiar territory and fans will be delighted to know that this is one of the better versions that exist out there. Despite being a straight port with a few extra bells and whistles, it looks and sounds better on the 3DS system and the ability to adjust how it looks as well as create save states is icing on the cake. Triple Trouble can be found in numerous Sonic compilations, including the Sonic Gems Collection, so if you already own those there isn’t much incentive to upgrade. On the other hand, if you are a big Sonic fan and must simply take this on the go, this is definitely worth picking up. Hopefully, Sonic’s other Game Gear titles will follow suit.
