Can Gaming Ever Produce A ‘Pride and Prejudice’?

Though a great many games include a romantic interest, few, if any, have managed to create a convincing, powerful romance. OnlySP asks whether it is even possible for it to be done and some of the possible ramifications if it were to be so. (Asura's Wrath, Binary Domain, Brutal Legend, Culture, Dear Esther, Dev, Grand Theft Auto IV, Heavy Rain , Industry, Infamous, Valkyria Chronicles)

Sora + Kairi

Tidus + Yuna

Squall + Rinoa

Aya Brea + Kyle Madigan

Cloud + Aerith/Tifa (o.o who knows what's truly going on there)

and possibly Dom + Maria

Zack +Aeris
Cloud + Tifa

This was evident in both Advent Children and Crisis Core.

Not really ,

Zack + Aerith , sure , but then he died . I know its a fiction but it isnt farfetched she was moving on with someone else , even if that someone was mostly "copying" and channeling Zack .

Likewise Cloud+Tifa could go either way , after Aerith's death , but it remains rather unclear

Anyway a game romance i liked quite a bit was Fei and Elly in Xenogears . There is definitive sparks and interest right from the beginning , but it's not forced down your throat like some of the FF ones , and it grows naturally .

And in Advent Children we see Zack and Aeris have been reunited in the afterlife as we see in a rather symbolic scene where she tells Cloud he's alright now and they both walk out together.

Plus, I may be wrong here, but Cloud and Tifa did live together raising orphans as the parents. Cloud may not have been ready to commit to her because of his guilt with Aeris but that was lifted by the end of the film. He agreed with Denzel that they would all return home together.

I know it's not all concrete or anything but there's really nothing to the contrary.

that's the thing they live together with orphan kids and being partern in the business . Doesnt point one way or another and leave to interpretations . In the stories and novel , Cloud already was with them , and yet had little qualm leaving her behind for a while .

Not saying you're wrong , but it's not clear and evident like you said before . It's open to interpretation till they decide otherwise .

Mine remain that they are just friends , even if tifa obviously wants more . Never was a fan of the idea of her being default second choice because Aerith died . At the very least in the case of Zack and cloud + aerith , there wasnt a triangle and current interraction , cloud and aerith truly met later on .

And Tifa never was ahead of Aerith in the game for Cloud's affection , not even once , so that's exactly what it would feel like to me .

She deserves better than consolation prize , and would be exactly that in the romance .

I would say no, but that isn't as negative as perhaps some would have you think.

We'll continue to get decent romances, but I think the difference between interacting with something and reading about it makes it difficult to rival how other media might handle it.

Instead, I think what's important is to build upon that interactivity so that we can have something unique to us, just as good artistically, but in a different vein.

Only if someone makes Pride and Prejudice: The Game...
Y'know, keep the foundation of the story there, but make it more gamey. Have some gunplay, explosions, an interactive sex scene or two involving Mr Darcy and some crack whores, and throw in the occasional slide puzzle every now and then. BAM! You've got yourself the highwater mark of video game storytelling. Ebert will hang himself in shame.

Do we really need it, though?

For one, romance doesn't really translate to gameplay. Unless you like dating sims. Two, it's naturally more convincing when you have flesh and blood actors and the presentation is 1000000% story (you don't have to worry about gameplay in movies, if you weren't aware).

And last of all, they exist. If you're examining beat em ups, GTA, infamous, etc....you're not exactly looking in the right places. Those games by no means are TRYING to get top notch romance in them.

this , when delving into the subject , you need to look at past titles from more than a year ago and beyond cod level popular games .

Wich is why those kind of article pretending such subject are inexistant are laughable at best . YOu just dont even wanna search for valid example to discuss , for starters

Let me see if I can remember Pride and Prejudice...
Elizabeth sees Mr.Darcy and thinks he is a complete cock, which he is. Then she sees his huge castle(not referring to his dick) and she becomes wetter than the Atlantic ocean and she falls in love. THE END.

I hope gaming doesn't produce something like that :P

Seriously though, if someone can do it, it would be Quantic Dream.

Half-life 2 is easily the most romantic game I've ever played. It may contain more alien crab headed zombies and less melodramatic conversation than Pride and prejudice but the bond the game builds between Gordon and Alyx goes way beyond your typical 'romantic interest' in a game for me.
