Analizing trust and the Mass Effect 3 DLC fiasco

Erik Kain, Contributor of Forbes writes:

"If BioWare had released additional quests that extended the story of Mass Effect 3 or added prelude or other context several months after the release of the game itself, I sincerely doubt fans would be so upset."

The story is too old to be commented.

Except the content was never meant for non-CE players. The author writes about his analogy with Music, but it's completely off the mark. A collectors edition of an album would probably include some extra content over the regular edition.

Usually collector's editions of anything include extra content over the original. However, its usually bonus content. With movies, behind the scenes footage / making of stuff (though pretty much all regular versions these days have the behind the scenes, deleted scenes, and such). They're not cutting out characters from the movie, and selling them and the scenes with them for additional money (free for the collector's) the same day the regular version goes on sale.

As for music, the collectors edition would have extra content, but they're not gonna have it be a few extra songs that you'd have to be $10 more for the collectors edition or get the regular and pay $5 more the same day.

Hell, usually the content in the collectors edition is not sold separately so that you have to buy that edition to begin with. "Except the content was never meant for non-CE players", if that were true, they would have never sold that content as day 1 DLC to begin with and people would have been fine. Instead, day one and on the disc tends to makes people feel ripped off.

"They're not cutting out characters from the movie"

Except there's no evidence to support that statement. Everybody who has the character has already come to the conclusion that it is no different from Zaeed in Mass Effect 2, e.g. a bonus mission and a bonus character that add nothing to the actual game.

" if that were true, they would have never sold that content as day 1 DLC to begin with and people would have been fine"

Look back, the content was announced ages ago as "exclusive for the CE owners":

The reason they decided to make it available to normal owners was that the CE sold out incredibly quickly, and people started sending e-mails to see if Bioware was making additional ones available, as they wanted the extra content.
