Heavy Rain Dev: 'We Are Exclusive to Sony'

IGN: Yesterday, Quantic Dream Founder and Heavy Rain developer David Cage debuted the 'Kara' short film. No, it wasn't a trailer for a new game but rather a trailer for the engine the development house is using on its next project. If you haven't watched the video, it's stunning -- using mo-cap, vocal and facial performances that were all captured at the same time. We grabbed Cage after screening the trailer, and got him to spill on a number of hot topics.

tantobanto4430d ago

I didnt particularly like heavy rain that much

it plays out like a VN but it wasnt as interesting as say disgaea infinite or 999, or layton or pheonix wright

Raf1k14430d ago

Heavy Rain certainly wasn't the best game and didn't quite live up to some of the stuff we were expecting. However I did enjoy it and think that the devs will have learned a lot and therefore be able to create something really great.

CarlitoBrigante4430d ago

No. Heavy Rain truly lived up to everything we were expecting. Heavy Rain is regarded as one of the best games out there, its not a cult classic hit anymore since it almost sold 3 million copies.

The people disliking Heavy Rain are probably kids who enjoy CoD, and seeing tantobanto's comment: a kiddy Nintendo fan.

saladthieves4430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

I know everyone has a right to their opinion, so my opinion is that your opinion on Heavy Rain is total BULL.

I absolutely enjoyed playing Heavy Rain, so much that I had to platinum the game! It was like fresh air or a change of scenery from an industry that was ridiculously flooded with generic boring shooters, every year.

Heavy rain was something unique - it was a new experience and I'm glad I picked up a copy - it was well worth it.

(I should probably replay the game with the PS Move, to see how well it fairs)

I just wish there were more innovative games like it and fewer that lack innovation like the ongoing Dall of Cuty series.

MRMagoo1234430d ago

@egidem

I totally agree with every agree power i have.

BitbyDeath4430d ago

Heavy Rain is one of the best games to come out this gen IMO.

lastdual4430d ago

I still prefer Indigo Prophecy to Heavy Rain, though I appreciate what both games were trying to do.

While I enjoy them for what they are, I can also totally understand people disliking these types of games. It can sometimes feel like the act of playing the game *gets in the way* rather than adds to the story, and the occasional sequences that exist solely to make you do QTEs without moving the plot forward at all are just cumbersome.

Basically, this genre is still very much a work in progress, but I have no doubt it will mature with future games.

b163o14430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

HeavyRain tugs @the players emotions, something I haven't felt since FF7. QD, Sony will purchase you after this game...and we all Welcome you into the family. Indigo Prophecy should be on PSN...

Wow just read, this trailer is a YEAR OLD!!!!

sikbeta4430d ago

You people should be thankful that a game like HR even came out, in this day an age, if it's not a FPS or a $0.99 game, it's doomed and there is nothing to do...

kaveti66164430d ago

"No. Heavy Rain truly lived up to everything we were expecting. Heavy Rain is regarded as one of the best games out there, its not a cult classic hit anymore since it almost sold 3 million copies.

Every single sentence in your statement is a logical fallacy.

Let's break it down.

"No. Heavy Rain truly lived up to everything we were expecting."

Appeal to popularity/ Argumentum ad populum.

"Heavy Rain is regarded as one of the best games out there, its not a cult classic hit anymore since it almost sold 3 million copies."

Appeal to popularity / appeal to authority

"The people disliking Heavy Rain are probably kids who enjoy CoD, and seeing tantobanto's comment: a kiddy Nintendo fan."

Ad Hominem twice over.

So when Heavy Rain sells 3 million copies, you use this fact to bolster it's reputation, but in the very same post you accuse someone of being a person who enjoys CoD, which happens to sell almost 20 million copies an iteration.

You say things like, "we" to make it seem like you represent others in your attack against someone else's personal opinion.

Of course, Rafk1k1 made similar mistakes.

"Heavy Rain certainly wasn't the best game and didn't quite live up to some of the stuff we were expecting."

He use "we" as well when describing a personal opinion.

baodeus4430d ago

I like the heavy rain story and mystery, but i couldn't get over the redundant QTE events. Same with any games that focus so much on it.

badz1494430d ago

the Kara tech demo is great and I'm psych for their next offering! come on Cage and Co.!

Kurt Russell4430d ago

"The people disliking Heavy Rain are probably kids who enjoy CoD"

That's simply not true to the point it is a blindly idiotic remark...

Heavy Rain is not for everyone, it looks great and is totally original - but it just wasn't for me.

hay4429d ago

One can dislike Heavy Rain due to personal preference, but denying it's greatness is just a mistake.

Saladfax4429d ago

Heavy Rain definitely provided an excellent experience, and made a nice improvement over the Indigo Prophecy formula.

Small problems with a couple of their voice actors, a few odd dialogue transitions, and a couple plot points which don't make sense once you have the whole picture didn't spoil a very good experience. Hopefully, QD will continue to improve their craft.

MySwordIsHeavenly4429d ago

@edigem Please play it with Move. It's definitely worth it! ;)

@ LX-General-Kaos

Well said!

Jamzluminati4430d ago

And now the deal has been done, now we just need to buy them.

F7U124430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

Enough with this exclusivity nonsense and allow all gamers to partake in the fun.

(disagrees already but no posts to explain as to why...f**king fanboys. and this is coming from a PS3 owner)

*vendor lock-in is a bad thing boys and girls. It's bad when MS does it, Apple and yes even Sony.

MetalProxy4430d ago

vender lock in? oh just another euphorian I see? moving on

MysticStrummer4430d ago

As much as some people have tried to deny it this generation, exclusives are what define a console. All gamers are allowed to play these games, as there's nothing stopping them from buying the system. If they don't feel there are enough exclusive games they want to play on the console to justify a purchase, that's their own business.

smashcrashbash4430d ago

You obviously know nothing about business. If everyone could just play anything on any system it would be harder for companies to make on system look more attractive then the other.

Besides do you think anyone but PlayStation owners would have brought as many copies of Heavy Rain as we did? Nope. Microsoft and Nintendo owners would have ignored it and it would have sold less copies. Argue all you like but certain games would not have sold as well if they were on any other system. Heavy Rain sold well on the PS3 and they hope their next game will do the same. Why chance putting it on any other system so they can criticize it or ignore it completely?

FunkMacNasty4430d ago

Honestly, I don't think exclusives would matter much if they were done away with next generation. By now, the console war has raged to the point that it has created distinct armies of blind corporate drones (what we all like to call "fanboys"), who are likely to continue to support their flagship brand simply out of brand loyalty.

When we used to buy consoles we considered things like hardware specs, and preferred exclusives when it came time to choose. Nowadays only serious gamers do that. Too many other people are worried about brand loyalty.

MRMagoo1234430d ago

If there wasnt exclusives what would be the point in different consoles, plus imagine how downgraded some of this gens exclusives would be if they where multiplatform instead, what a stupid idea.

Veneno4430d ago

for fvck's sake, you morons that declare "no more exclusives" aren't noble heroes out to save the games industry, you just look like ignorant man-babies with no concept of the real-world.

TitanUp4430d ago

game system need to have exclusives if they didn't everyone would just buy the same system be no reason to own multiple systems.

NeoBasch4430d ago

The problem is independent developers don't exactly have job security. One flop and they'll be closing down for sure. That's why Bioware signed on to EA instead of publishing their own games. Though, I'm sure if Bioware had the resources to make something like ME2 and 3 on their own they would self-publish.

Quantic Dream wants that simple assurance Bioware has with EA, and they developed a good relationship with Sony. So it's easy to see why they would say something like this. They want to be bought up. Sony's already covering their budgets, they just want to secure a future for themselves.

undisputed4429d ago

If we didn't have exclusives, then we wouldn't see any console truly shine.

Cloudberry4430d ago

As might as well they buy Quantic Dreams then.

dktxx24430d ago

I think they like their independence. Sony can't tell them what to do, and they like that. And even though Sony has awesome relationships with its first party studios, you never know if someone new will take over and be more dictatorial.

I think second-party suits them just fine.

LolololRumz4430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

I duno, financially for Sony it's probably better to not buy them right now if they say their fully committed.

But at the same time you want full re-assurance they they're with you. I think Sony will take their time with this

Gamer19824429d ago

Why buy when they are loyal? Save there money.. If they start talking about 360 games then you buy.

F7U124430d ago

I'm a Mac user and fu*k yeah I'm still pissed.

F7U124429d ago (Edited 4429d ago )

And the point that I meant to convey with the video was to illustrate how bungie were nothing but a bunch of Steve Jobs lovin' Mac using snobs and if it wasn't for us Mac users you wouldn't have your beloved Halo today. So mehhhh xP

@MrMagoo123

Hell yeah I'm a Mac user and damn proud. And after using Win hardware and software for almost two years I can safely say that Apple's OS and beautifully designed hardware trounces the Win OS in almost every way.

I don't mind paying a little more for a product that offers seamless integration of services w/hardware that requires minimal interaction by the user in order for it to run properly allowing me to focus on the most important thing, WORK! And neither do the millions of new Win customers that are coming over to the(light side of the force :D) Mac every year.

So, in short, http://i.imgur.com/9XbwC.gi...

Noctua NH-D14 140mm CPU Cooler
Dual AMD 1GB Gigabyte 6950s OC
2x 120GB SSD Corsair F3
(Win7 installed on SSD speedy as f**k)

yewles14430d ago

Insomniac ALWAYS stated they didn't want to be owned because they liked their freedom.

Quantic Dream on the other hand...

http://www.develop-online.n...

Rynx4430d ago

I find this comment hilarious and pathetic at the same time.

1)How many years has Insomniac been making games exclusively for SONY before they went Multiplat?

2)How many of those IP's that Insomniac made while under SONY are going Multiplat now that Insomniac is a third party dev?

3)If you are insinuating that Quantic Dreams has the possibility of going the route of Insomniac, then I tell you one thing. We're in for a ton of games exclusive to SONY before they do.

Man, the trolls on N4G are really getting lazy...

gaden_malak4430d ago

Well the IPs insomniac made for Sony were Sony owned thus why they aren't multi-plat.

This was part of the reason they went multi-plat, they wanted to own their own IP.

dale_denton4430d ago

FINANCIALGAMER, YOU SIR HAVE BEEN SERVED.

TheLastGuardian4430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

We have a Dale Denton on N4G now? Sweet, I love Pineapple Express. This might sound creepy but, I'm going to track you on here from now on. Hope you live up to your name and make me laugh.

OT: Sony exclusive FTMFW! Heavy Rain had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't stop playing for 4 days straight until I got the platinum.

The Kara tech demo gave me chills and made me teary eyed when I first watched it. The graphics and facial animations were amazing. I would love to play a game based on that concept. I'm very excited for the future of Sony and Quantic Dream.

Quantic Dream Announces New Publishing Label Spotlight

Quantic Dream has announced a new publishing label, Spotlight, following the reveal of debut title Under the Waves.

sadraiden319d ago

Interesting to see how this works out for them. QD have had a very lucrative partnership with Sony. David Cage is a household name among Playstation owners, and he might not have been if QD stuck with Atari as their publisher. Now they're launching Spotlight so they can circumvent Sony exclusivity? I imagine this isn't the last we'll hear from Spotlight.

Abnor_Mal319d ago (Edited 319d ago )

Weren’t QD bought buy Tencent, and if so then I’m sure there wouldn’t be anymore Sony exclusivity.

Ok it seems to have been NetEase that bought them back in 2022.

mjchitown319d ago

this is not a Sony exclusivity. you can clearly see Xbox One Xbox Series X ps4 ps5

Sonic1881319d ago (Edited 319d ago )

Funny you mention that because in a few Diablo 4 articles, Xbox was the only console that was tagged. It didn't tag playstation or PC and Diablo 4 is a multiplatform game

porkChop319d ago

Bro they had a 3-game contract with Sony. That ended with Detroit. They've haven't been working together since then, so they aren't circumventing anything. They have no obligation to Sony.

CrimsonWing69319d ago

Didn’t they show a Star Wars fake at a Sony event?

I might be wrong about that, but I feel like that’s where I saw if.

porkChop318d ago

I don't think so, Star Wars: Eclipse was announced at the Game Awards.

CrimsonWing69318d ago

@porkchop

The Game Awards, you’re right!

Kekewei319d ago (Edited 319d ago )

I don't think so. There some sources claiming Sony was not happy with their partnership at the end, they even canceled a project that was supposed to be the 4th ps exclusive from QD.

There's nothing wrong with QTE's. Never understood the hate for them. You press a single button to attack in most games. You press a single button to jump in most games. Why does it then become an issue when you press a button during a cutscene to do something?

JackBNimble318d ago

It's a niche market and not everyone is into that type of game.

RedDevils319d ago

I like their games, it's different from all the trash we seeing every years.

GoodGuy09319d ago

Eh.

Beyond Two Souls and Detroit were alright for the most part.
They're still making games, so something going decent for them.

Supermassive is definitely beating them in this genre though.
