IGN: Jack Thompson is the protagonist of BioShock

IGN on BioShock (in their Xbox 360 2007 Year in Review feature):

"Players inhabited the body of Jack Thompson, a victim of a plane crash in the middle of the ocean with no help in sight other than a nearby lighthouse. Doing what he thought was best Jack swam over, entered and was transported to the underwater insanity trapped within the world of Rapture." (BioShock, PC, Xbox 360)
