With ‘Mass Effect 3′ coming out soon and the second J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie in development, we look at what makes these important sci-fi franchises special and which is better.
I mean Mass Effect is OK, but it will never touch the "classicness" of Star Trek, the first book is just a marvel to sci-fi history. ME is also very bland story wise, it's just another INVASION type sci-fi with no depth at all.
If they had gone the way ME1 was suggesting, offered options for relationships between crew members as well as races - and by that I don't mean just sex - it would have come close. As is its the difference between a good TV series with an overarching plot over the season, and an Movie that relies more on special effects than script and plot.
Yep Star Wars is Awesome.
Comparing two different universes that's been around for different amounts of time is nothing short of funny. One's been out there for barely 4.5 years while the other one is out there for decades. And if you would've cared a little bit about Mass Effect, you'd know the depth it offers and not just with the games but with the comics and books (except the last one which turned out to be an atrocity (in terms of lore)).
Mass Effect is great, but Star Trek has the best sci-fi world. If someone were to put as much money and effort into a Star Trek RPG as Bioware has put into Mass Effect, Star Trek would sell far more copies than Mass Effect could ever dream of selling.
There was a time when people said the same thing about Mario and Mickey...
Ya the Mass Effect universe is great, but Star Trek is one of the best. Trek was not just about the adventures, it was about a philosophy, and that is one of its enduring aspects. Is what human potential can be, and hopes that we can better our selves and become like the Federation.
Well it's better than JJ Abrams Star Trek, but that's just Star Trek in name only. As for comparing it to Star Trek proper I would say it owes too much to Star Trek to say it's really that much better. The writing and budget are, of course, much better than the original series and parts of Next Gen, but it does less with more. Star Trek as a franchise created the paradigm that Mass Effect exists in. And on top of that they are two completely different formats. By and large Star Trek tells a different story each episode and with a different theme. Mass Effect focuses more on the overarching story and individual characterization. They excel in completely different areas.
Im not laced in Trek lore, but i saw the newest one and loved it. But a epic game will never touch a epic movie or show. If Mass Effect were given the proper movie treatment i think more people would appreciate that than the game. Stories played out in movie form provoke a different sense.
Those who say Star Trek or even star wars is better than mass effect simply dont know what they're talking about. Sure, I can understand you liking Star Trek more since you have been fans of the franchise for years, even decades and its the same thing with star wars. But when you compare the actual depth and the gigantic level of detail and realism the mass effect universe has, no other sci-fi series can compare.
It seems you really dont know what you are talking about!I sugest you to go and watch every Star Trek or Star wars movie before making the stupid assumption that the mass effect lore is better than any of those two sci-fi series. You can also go watch the Babylon series that is also better than Mass effect.
Yeah, you can say that because you've seen SOOO much of the Mass Effect universe, and less of the Star Trek universe. The thing is: there's far more to the Trek universe, from race relations to amount of space explored to length of time to traveling through time. Star Trek is hailed as the greatest becaue Roddenberry's vision was complete from inception. Even the new movies, completely unrelated to the rest of the Star Trek universe, are nonetheless related to the Star Trek universe, and all because that depth was available from the original. As far as sci-fi is concerned, I'd put Xenosaga/gears ahead of Mass Effect, but Star Trek is STILL above that.
Thats a matter of opinion. Go tell a trekie that and see what they say. Same with a star wars fb.
Apples and oranges my friends..... Apples and oranges. Different types of experience.
better than Star Trek? no way.
This is like when Rovio said they'd be bigger than Disney...
