The Rise and Fall of Sega Enterprises

Eurogamer: When Sega discontinued production of the Dreamcast console in 2001 and withdrew from the domestic hardware market, it marked the conclusion of one of the most tumultuous and error-strewn periods in the company's 72-year history. Sega Enterprises' spectacular fall from grace during the course of the 1990s remains a tragic spectacle of overconfidence and woefully misguided business practice.

When it comes to the originators in interactive innovation and quality, Dark Sniper gives his full respect and props to Sega. Despite their questionable decisions, they always took risks to bring the consumers the most thrilling and innovative games of all time.

Before there was Kinect, Sega released the Activator. A quick search on Youtube will show you that the Sega Activator and Microsoft's Kinect are essentially the same device. The only difference is that the former was released in 2010 and the latter was released in 1993.

Even though the Sega Saturn was curbstomped by PlayStation in the mid 90's, it had it's own unique library of fighters that were only capable on Sega's system. Marvel/X-Men vs Street Fighter, Last Bronx, Fighting Vipers, Fighter's Megamix, Dead or Alive, Dragonball Z Legends, Street Fighter Alpha 3 are just a few fighters that were either exclusive on Saturn or received better ports. When it comes to fighting games, Sega Saturn was and still is THAT console.

Finally, Sega's final swan song was the Dreamcast. Sega did a great job once again pushing the envelope forward with features that we take for granted in today's gaming. The Dreamcast was the first console to include online ready gaming out of the box, and cross platform gaming (DC to PC). Also it was the first system to include a digital screen in the center of the controller, you may have recently seen this reinvention being imitated by Nintendo with the Wii-U.

Once again, Sega provided the gamers with top-notch content from killer titles such as Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, NBA 2K, Power Stone, Soul Calibur, Marvel vs Capcom 1/2, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Capcom vs SNK 1/2, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 Arena, Phantasy Star Online, Jet Set Radio and many others.

Last but not least, there is Yu Suzuki's masterpiece. In 1999 Shenmue was released. Without a shadow of a doubt, Shenmue is the greatest videogame of all time. Shenmue changed the way that we play games today. Including QTE sequences that blend in with the flow of gameplay and mystery. Even as Dark Sniper types this post, Shenmue remains only playable on Sega Dreamcast.

It is unfortunate that Sega was not able to survive the console war. But their spirit still remains as Yakuza is one of the greatest games Dark Sniper has played this generation. Gone but not forgotten, Dark Sniper wishes you well Sega.

I was 12 when Sega Discontinued the Dreamcast, even as a kid I was shocked

LX-General-Kaos4444d ago

Those were sad times indeed. I remember playing all of those classic dreamcast games. I make sure I do my part and support them when released on xbox live. As a youngin once the dreamcast was DisContinued I was forced to take my business back to the house of Nintendo.

Sega will always hold a special place in my heart. I owned a Sega Genesis & Super Nintendo and those were just one of the greatest moments in gaming history.

playing Vector Man, Sonic 1,2,3, Shinobi 3 and EarthWorm Jim on my Genesis I will never forget how I felt.

Sega sells Relic and will cut 240 jobs across UK studios

GamesIndustry.biz writes: "Relic is best known for the Company of Heroes and Dawn of War games, and recently developed the new Age of Empires for Microsoft. Relic will transition to an independent studio and will no-longer be part of the Sega group of studios.

The majority of the 240 job cuts are across Creative Assembly and Sega Europe, while there will be a ‘small number’ cut from Sega HARDLight. There was no mention of other Sega UK studios, including Two Point Studios and Sports Interactive."

Shame about Creative Assembly, they should have just been allowed to do an Alien Isolation sequel.

just_looken27d ago

It was that garbage coh 3 that did them in only a special team can make a sequel worse in every way even though it was a 10 year gap and the same era.

gold_drake28d ago

I hope they find new jobs in the industry soon.

Two Point Studios and Sports Interactive probably run on a shoe string budget so that fits into SEGA better lol

SEGA’s Switch Predecessor: What Happened to the Nomad?

Sega had such a turbulent existence from the mid-90s to when they dropped out of console manufacturing entirely in 2001, it’s understandable if you’ve never heard of the Genesis Nomad.
