The 50 Worst Video Game Endings

Only in the last decade or so have video games really begun to approach the storytelling prowess of other entertainment mediums. It's true! And it may seem like roses that games are growing up, but it's a double-edged sword; after all, the more they're capable of, the more should be expected of them.

Nowhere is that more apparent than in a game's finale. Cliffhangers, multiple endings and major copouts have plagued us for years. Only now, when many games have plots that rival at least B-grade movies, those minor complaints can easily become glaring flaws that ruin entire experiences.

The story is too old to be commented.

"26. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008)
Final Level: Outer Haven Missile Hangar
Why It Sucked: We don't mind a complex story, but MGS 4 is honestly ridiculous. It feels like Kojima just wanted to play a joke on everyone who loved Metal Gear Solid 3. And the final series of cutscenes—which clock in at about an hour—are the punch line. The fist fight with Liquid was actually pretty tight, but it just had to end with a movie-length cinematic, didn't it?
How We Would End It: We'd be hard-pressed to even explain what was going on during this train wreck, much less figure out how to fix it."

13. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)
Final Level: Federal Hall
Why It Sucked: The ending of every Metal Gear Solid game is pretty terrible when you really think about it, but Sons of Liberty stands out to us as the most nonsensical of the bunch. It's something about the President being your dad and he has tentacles and someone wants to blow something up.
How We Would End It: Hideo Kojima is not a genius. He needs someone to keep his insane bullshit in check, and nowhere is this more apparent than in MGS 2. That said, we have no idea how to fix this train wreck.

GTFO! Please, for the love of God just don't ever... EVER, write another article. EVER!

bluegoblin2250d ago

haha i could not agree more!! when i hit 26 (mgs4) i was like -__- this idiot, but for some unknown reason i kept going and then i hit msg2 which didnt surprise me. however upon further reading i came across " hideo kojima is not a genius. He needs someone to keep his insane bullshit in check.."

hay2250d ago

Thanks for the warning. I thought this article is for real, but it seems more like a lame joke now.

guitarded772249d ago (Edited 2249d ago )

Yeah, this article is ridiculous. With some of the games he put on the list as crap story, I'd love to see what this guy could do... his game would be the most epic of all time if he's putting some of these down. /s

I'm more upset about him putting HL2: EP2 as number 2 on this list? He's mad because it ended with an emotionally heartbreaking scene featuring the death of one of my favorite side characters of any video game of all time. And he's mad that there wasn't a boss fight at the end? Does he even realize that Half Life has never had real boss fights? And that the game has always been made so that there is a huge cliffhanger ending? He also comments and says that HL2 had a terrible ended. I LOVED the end in of every Half Life game. They were perfect and left you craving more and more of the game. How should HL2 have ended? Right after the explosion of the reactor so they are just left there in a tumbling building? No. Instead they ended it having you believe that Alyx might be killed and that gman would once again put you in stasis until he needed you again. Instead the vortigaunts save Alyx and teleport Gordon at the beginning of EP1. Its one of the most fulfilling endings/intros I've ever played. If EP3 ever comes out, I have no doubt it will be one of the most emotional scenes ever in a video game.

badz1492249d ago

so...basically this is an article about bashing the endings of popular games, right?there are tons of other unpopular games out there with crappy endings. this just want to generate hits. not getting any from me though

andibandit2249d ago

you need to smoke some more of that weed before reading on in this thread, if you think we dont know it's all connected.

Kurt Russell2250d ago

MGS is great and all, but I must admit I do lose interest in the game endings... not to the extent of this journalist, but they do go on a bit.

jthamind2250d ago

yeah, imo the only MGS console game that had a great ending was Snake Eater. 1, 2 and 4 were either meh, or WAY too long, or both.

i love the series and all, but Hideo Kojima is far from being a great writer. he's long winded and sometimes flat out preposterous.

Brosy2250d ago

Kojima is way over rated when it comes to story telling. He comes off with some of the most ridiculious stories. Some of them are so conveluted that I just forget about the story and just enjoy the game.

Solid_Snake372250d ago (Edited 2250d ago )

what you guys dont understand is every MGS game are connected. And every mgs game has a stroke of genius when it comes to story telling. You just have to open your mind and it will become clearer.

The MGS4 ending was perfect. It explained everything. Couldnt believe the author´s ignorance...

jthamind2250d ago (Edited 2250d ago )

please don't try to tell me what i do and don't understand. i know that every game's story is connected. i understand the story. i understand where it connects each game to the next, or to the previous. i've played them all and enjoyed them, for the most part.

the bottom line is that Kojima is simply not a good writer/storyteller. his ideas are (usually) fine, but he has no idea how to present them well.

Saladfax2250d ago (Edited 2250d ago )

By open your mind, are you referring to the use some kind of illicit substance?

Okay sure, it's all interconnected, but it flies very close to convolution, and, as mentioned, it gets long-winded and preposterous. Snake Eater was the definite best.

Yeah... jthamind said it pretty darn well. Kojima's great as an idea man, but it seems his writing is a bit... well...

RedDead2250d ago

Yeah Agree, Snake eater didn't have any BS to clean up, MGS4 had to close the whole series. Snake eater just finished up it's own thing while being incredibly sad and Shiz. MGS1 was decent too I thought

snipes1012250d ago

I agree with Kurt on this one. Kojima just makes his plot way too overblown. Sure, they're astounding in their complexity, but it just feels like he is being complex for the sake of being complex. He's not really accomplishing anything artistically speaking by making the stories so ridiculous.

Complexity and near convolution are not necessarily the traits of a good story teller. Kojima would be wise to learn this.

My two cents.

BlackTar1872249d ago (Edited 2249d ago )

I love that you guys are giving pointers/ cut downs to one of the most influential brains in gaming. And besides Mario and master chief one of the most recognizable character in VG history. Funny actually.

I got it what he should do is dumb it down for everyone so people don't get lost. Thats what VG's have been doing for 15+ years now dumbing everything down. got it.

Im not meaning to be a jerk just find it funny is all. Took me a whole lot of reading in the database to get my head around the series completely and i have been playing since Nsx.

Almost every game Kojima has made is brilliant lol at kojima would be wise to learn this.

Snatcher/MGS/ZOE/policenauts (i believe) Etc. all great games with detailed and exciting storys and storytelling.

2pacalypsenow2249d ago

To nderstand and enjoy The mgs story you have to had played every single game half of the people only talk about the 3rd game cuz its the only one they have played

jthamind2249d ago

"Took me a whole lot of reading in the database to get my head around the series completely and i have been playing since Nsx."

lol. you think that's a sign of good storytelling? you're making my point for me. his storytelling is convoluted, needlessly complex and overlong. that's not how you tell a good story.

-______- seriously, stop writing gaming articles. You are clearly not cut out for this type of work

ShabbaRanks2250d ago

I fell asleep during the MGS4 ending lol … It wasn’t bad, I actually liked the Raiden part in the hospital, but it was veeeery long. It was 3am when I finished the game and I had a long day too, so maybe that’s why I fell asleep lolz :P

I watched it again the next day to see what I missed.

imo snake should of died, he’s a cold blooded killer so why would he hesitate killing him self

BlackTar1872249d ago

I 100% agree he should have died I was hoping for it. To see an END a real one where the hero dies just like in RL

ShabbaRanks2249d ago

Exactly …

The ones who disagreed with me are afraid to die I guess, but you know what ?… We all die, so do are favourite hero’s

ljh2172247d ago

I too, love endings that remind the audience of their mortality. They always end up feeling more real than the fairytale bullshit we get in most storys. It's why I love the first three books of A Song of Fire and Ice.

MsclMexican2250d ago

Also...Bioshock as 3 and Half-Life 2 episode 2 as number 2?

You just lost whatever respect you ever had complex

snipes1012250d ago

Bioshock had a bad ending, it deserves to be up there. The rest of the game was comparatively incredible next to that horrible circus of an ending. It was pretty much critically panned across the board (the ending I mean).

I cant speak for half life ep. 2...never played it.

TheOtherTheoG2249d ago

Bioshock did have a poor ending, the last third of the game honestly shouldn't really have been there. As for Episode 2, I thought that was really, really well done, one of the most shockingly sad character deaths in a game, like, ever.

vickers5002249d ago

Please, someone explain to me how Bioshock had a bad ending? I honestly don't understand why people have such a problem with it.

I personally thought it was one of the best endings in a game I had ever played, and even choked up a little in the good ending.

ReservoirDog3162249d ago

@ vickers

After the famous meetup with Andrew Ryan, the game drags on for about another 1-2 hours with an escort mission and a very anti-Bioshock boss battle where Fontaine morphs into a giant...thing for some reason and you have to hit him 3 times then it's over.

For all Bioshock did to advance how we look at games, a short (but touching) 30 second cutscene of what happened to the Little Sisters after doesn't stop the fact that the last hour or two fell back on some of gaming's biggest clichés and tired ideas. It should've ended shortly after the Would You Kindly part to help that.

Even Ken Levine agrees.

vickers5002249d ago

"the last hour or two fell back on some of gaming's biggest clichés and tired ideas."

So you're saying because you had to do an escort mission (which wasn't all that bad compared to other gaming escort missions), that the ending was ruined partly because of that?

And what was so wrong with the boss battle? It's a hell of a lot better than like 80% of todays boss battles out there. I can see some people not liking it that much, but I see absolutely no reason to hate it. As for why Fontaine transformed into a juiced up freak, well that's apparently what happens when you inject a truckload of gene altering material into yourself. It's not THAT unreasonable for him to look like that considering some of the other liberties the game took with fiction/fantasy (spider splicers, big daddies, teleportation and every single plasmid). Are you actually telling me that you're okay with shooting bees/fire/ice out of your hands, but draw the line at a character gaining some body mass quickly?

And Ken Levine is a perfectionist and has said before he always criticizes his work and thinks about what he could have done better (even the stuff that was pretty much flawless), so when it comes to his opinion on the ending, you can't really use that as evidence that the games ending is bad.

And a crappy boss battle doesn't ruin an ending. Just look at Uncharted 2. It had by far one of the worst boss battles I had ever played, with a cliche evil bald guy dressed in black with a scar on his face, shooting at you with what is apparently a shotgun with sniper rifle capabilities, throwing like 4-8 grenades at you all at once, all while spouting some of the dumbest freaking one liners that might have well come from "bad guy dialogue 101". That boss battle was utterly terrible, but it didn't ruin the ending of the game.

ReservoirDog3162249d ago

@ above

Haha, true about Uncharted 2 but my point is it never hits greatness again after the Andrew Ryan meet up. It just keeps going as if to pad it out another couple of hours. My point isn't that it wasn't believable, it's that it goes from true greatness from this gen that makes us think about every game we've ever played (why do we so mindlessly follow every order so often?), it falls back to an escort mission and a generic, kinda Batman AA ending (he suddenly mutates and gets huge and stupid) that just doesn't fit the tone of the game. It had an art deco Fallout underwater thing going and the game ends fighting the incredible hulk. Consistency kinda went out the window and that's why the ending hours just kinda stood out a little more than most games.

vickers5002248d ago

"(he suddenly mutates and gets huge and stupid) that just doesn't fit the tone of the game."
"My point isn't that it wasn't believable"

I disagree. I think andrew ryan hulking up is much more believable than spawning bees from the skin of your hands and sicking them on enemies, or teleporting enemies.

Fez2249d ago

The very fact that they couldn't think of how they would end MGS2 or 4, couldn't understand what was going on and didn't know how to improve either shows they are complete idiots.

They weren't even complicated endings at all.

How can they say every MGS game has a 'terrible' ending...and without giving a reason. Ridiculous.

n4f2249d ago

hey some people arent smart enough to see that mgs have potential. and calling hideo kojima not a genius is .... i dont know how to call that but its really nonsense

Megaton2249d ago

I wouldn't include MGS4 at all, but I'd put MGS2 even higher. An ending so bad, that I didn't bother with MGS3 until years after it was out.

gaden_malak2249d ago

Halo 2 would have been my #1 as well. I thought there was going to be another level but it just stopped.

walken72249d ago

Thanks N4F for putting that up. The list is missing Jurassic Park for Sega CD.

ReservoirDog3162249d ago

I love MGS but there's no denying that the story could've been handled a bit better. MGS1 and MGS3 had very tight stories and they worked best by far. MGS2 started getting a bit over complicated after the halfway point and MGS4 was just doing its job to wrap up all those storylines and it did it pretty well considering how much there was to tie up. But worst ever? That's just dumb.

But HL2 ep 2 being on there is horrible. Just horrible. The ending battle is probably the most open in the HL universe and it starts getting crazy* after awhile then it wraps it up with one of the most emotionally hard hitting scenes in any game ever. To call that the 2nd worst ever is just stupid.

Halo 2 was the worst ending ever though. I swore I accidentally pressed start and skipped the final cutscene.

Didn't read the article. I just can't stand it when they have to put every single entry on different slides...

Hicken2250d ago

You get an agree from me. Not giving hits to a greedy-ass site with an obviously crappy- judging from the comments above- sense of what's good and bad.

deep_fried_bum_cake2250d ago

Well it's complex, they do that with everything. Your not missing anything anyway, it's not a good list. Not terrible but still bad.

TheUnbiasedLion2250d ago

Yeah i saw the website and they always do this.

Greedy bastards want so many hits well they just lsot one from me.

Nugan2250d ago

One entry per page is acceptable if you have 10 or so entries and lots of content on each page, but not when you have 50 entries and only a (poorly written) sentence or two to say about each of them.

What an embarrassment.

Shinobi for Sega Master System. Worst ending ever!!

BlackFalcon2250d ago

Some valid choices, but some that are just simply whining. Apparently, one of their unwritten rules is that every little detail needs to be completely wrapped up with no questions left unanswered.
