Geek Revolt: Tales of Abyss (3DS)

GR's DeShaun Zollicoffer writes:

I love a good JRPG, but I never got around to playing Tales of Abyss when it hit the PS2 back in 2006. My introduction to the series came two years later in the form of the Xbox 360 version of Tales of Vesperia. Since I didn’t play the original version of Tales of Abyss I obviously can’t compare it with the 3DS port. And comparing it to Tales of Vesperia probably wouldn’t be fair. So I’m reviewing this as if it were a new game, because for me (and I’m sure a few other gamers) it is.

Games so Good, They Made an Anime About Them

It's not often that a game lives on beyond itsbeen published. These games were so good they made an anime around them.

MMM Fate/stay night was garbage the original anime and Unlimited Blade Works wasn't great either (Though UBWs animation/fights were amazing). But i will give it credit for spawning one of the best anime's Fate/Zero. A couple of these i definitely wouldn't go as far as to call them great.

I don't think you can say Disgaea got an anime because it was great, it's sales aren't even impressive, 1.7 in 8 years with several entries. There are plenty of games that have gotten anime adaptations like DRAMAtical Murder and Amnesia even though neither of those sold well.

Eiyuuou2938d ago

Sssssht! We don't talk about the 2006 FSN anime. It never happened, capishe?

The main problem with the FSN animes as a whole is that each adaptation is just 1/3 of the complete story. The 3 routes need to be adapted so that they can be judged as a whole.

Come on, how can you miss the Fatal Fury and Street Fighter animated movies? The 80's and 90's were chockful of great anime adaptations of video games which in my opinion, had much better quality than their modern counterparts.

Persona 4 sucked overall as a persona game. The only reason it became popular because it catered to weeaboos. It seems there are no more good writers around. Its funny because Persona 2 has an amazing story, but it didn't catch on as it was very serious and didn't cater to the aforementioned demographic.

Kaneki-Ken2937d ago

Ignorant you have become, and hatred flow thru you and this is why you failed. The irony is that Persona 1 and 2 writer is doing his own persona style game called Caligula and I see that he borrow a lot from Persona 4, and is like persona 4 but it n steroid.

Protagonist2937d ago

@Featuring_Dante

What a Ignorant comment.

donwel2938d ago

Actually Persona 4 got 2 animes. 1 for P4 and 1 for P4G.

Kaneki-Ken2937d ago

P4G is bad, while the original was awesome.

What is Namco Bandai Thinking in Regard to the Tales of Series?

Iran White writes:

Considering that this was a quick port to a hand held system, handled by a relative handful of people in comparison to the usual Tales game Development teams, and there was very little advertising done for the game, then Namco must have made a healthy profit from the Tales of the Abyss 3D re-release.

So why hasn’t Namco released or even announced any more games? With the 10 year anniversary of Symphonia receiving the HD re-release treatment on PS3, why not show some love on the 3DS side, since the audience is also there and there is profit to be made from it?

Uh, if you want to play Tales games, go for the PS3 versions instead of the 3DS then...? Don't hear me complaining about not getting the Vita games localized. I'd love that, but at least we're getting something with Tales of Symphonia HD, as well as Xillia 2.

ZeroX98763813d ago

I would get a vita RIGHT NOW if both tales games were to be released overseas.

MisterCastle3813d ago

3ds could do Tales just the same as Gamecube Im sure. I would kill to own Tales of Symphonia on 3DS.

Captain Qwark 93813d ago

i just started tales of vesperia and im loooooving it. i hope they bring more to ps4 next gen

Reverie3813d ago

Sony "bought" the Tales Of studios. That is the only thing that can explain the incomplete/beta games for the Wii/Xbox360 and PS3 perfect versions, the early ports released on Vita and their total refusal in making a 3DS game, and Baba's recent statements about the "series fans being only on PS3".
Now even the new born PS4 is getting a game in early development. Meanwhile, Baba lies about the Wii U "needing a bigger install base" even to receive a damn port and totally refusing to make a port of the new game for Xbox One/Wii U.

Dravidian3813d ago

Come on dude. I love my wii u and all and I honestly think it will feel weird to play symphonia on a sony console after the many times I played it on wii and gc, but the guy has a point. Namco is a business and all the people who work there need to feed themselves and their families. They cant constantly make investments with little promise of return. They can only afford to take so many risks.

Ps3 and ps4 are low risk and high reward. I cant be mad at them for going that route. I'm just glad we'll be getting more Tales here in the west.

That being said, I cant wait for wii u sales to pick up when the big guns drop (Smash, Mario 3dworld, Mario kart, Donkey Kong, and Zelda) and also the medium guns (X and Bayonetta.....I think they will be great, but they're niche).

We'll see what excuses he has then.

TruthbeTold3813d ago

The point was though that 500k early adopter 3DS owners bought the Abyss re-release to 'vote with their wallets' so to speak, and apparently that isn't good enough? Makes no sense.

Misaka_x_Touma3813d ago

@TruthbeTold

And I am one of Abyss 3DS owner.

Misaka_x_Touma3813d ago

Just got Tales of Vesperia early today on XBL which cost $15 folks go download it.
