10 Series That Changed Beyond Recognition

Some big game series have pulled major switcheroos over the years. Early gaming set genre expectations, yet whether evolving from technical constraints, or simply a reflection of the zeitgeist, a game born in one genre doesn't necessarily remain there. Through the advent of design breakthroughs and simple processing power, many games adapt and expand their horizons to become something truly new.

Some series have taken a detour into other genres, such as Halo and Halo Wars but they have a habit of returning to their comfort zone. (3DS, Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear, Metroid, Nintendo DS, PC, PS3, PSP, Syndicate, Wii, Xbox 360)

Resident evil also went through some massive over the top change. If you showed someone resident evil 1-3 for the 1st time, then showed them resi 5 and operation raccoon city. They would have no idea wtf happened.

agreed GTA5 i cant wait for....i hope the MP is like the old one but better i loved cops and crooks

grand theft auto. where is the humor?
JoySticksFTW  +   1164d ago
I'll say it...

F' that over-hyped soulless GTAIV

Where's the humor, is dead on.
MysticStrummer  +   1164d ago
There was humor in GTA4, but having less humor than previous entries in the series doesn't mean a game has changed beyond recognition anyway.
spacedelete  +   1164d ago
if you actually played it you would know there is humor. its just that the story is more realistic and humor is dark compared to previous games which had light over the top humor.

this ^

"its just that the story is more realistic"

Dude, they took out what makes GTA GTA

The over the top ridiculousness of the franchise while still telling a dark tale.

They can change the formula all they want; just don't attach the GTA name to it.

It's like Gay Tony injected the soul back into the series.

Stand-alone IV is blah'd, stale poop.

And before everyone say "Teh Salez!", don't forget all of the after-glow articles we got from so-called journalists questioning if the world over-hyped the game.

I can't answer for the world, but in my opinion Heck Yeah it's overhyped.

Phantasy Star also.

It would have been better if they'd picked gameplay screenshots for all the new games--would have been hilarious to see how many of them are FPS/ TPS now.
STONEY4  +   1164d ago
They did, you just have to mouse over the picture. (99% of them are FPS and TPS games)

I know, but the screenshots aren't from gameplay, they're mostly from, let's say, cinematic angles.

I want them all to be down-the-sights and crosshairs, gameplay screenshots. Just to really emphasize that they've all become the same genre.

Metroid needs to be stopped. I want the old one back!
PiperMCFierceson  +   1164d ago
Well when u days back that far I would guess you would have too. I kinda thought this article was referring to a more mordern change at a shorter time like socom socom 2 and the the last two that were recently released were completely different.
peeps  +   1164d ago
The thing is though, some of these games are just a natural evolution... Prince of Persia going from a 2d platformer to a 3d one, GTA going from a top down sandbox to a 3d one.

It's just natural progression. Of course some have changed a lot such as Syndicate and WOW.
Ascalon94  +   1164d ago
they need to put Zelda on this list
k2d  +   1164d ago
I'd put Final Fantasy in the top 3.
M_Prime  +   1164d ago
some weren't changes as much as "upgraded with the times" i mean GTA has the same basic formula as it did before, shoot everything, run over stuff.. graphics just improve..

where as games like XCOM went from RTS to FPS.. thats a change.. so this list isn't as much CHANGED as IMPROVED WITH BETTER TECH
Dac2u  +   1164d ago
Just because a game moves into 3D doesn't mean it's beyond recognition. The title of the article should be, game series which have made a natural evolution in their style or graphics.

I was expecting something like King's Quest to be listed. Where the games followed a specific character or theme, but completely changed their style. Look at King's Quest VII vs. all the other games in the series. Or FF XIII, which completely changed its most positive attributes from previous games.
xsymbiot  +   1164d ago
I think the beyond recognition part went a little to far. Metal gear, prince of persia, gta....these are evolved games that I like because they are recongnizable. They follow The zelda formula of "evolve or die." While trying to stay true to it roots.
bobrea  +   1164d ago
MGS never changed beyond recognition.
Ducky  +   1164d ago
Well, the game's script is certainly unrecognizable from "I feel asleep."
