This is fundamentally the reason that the Wii failed with the 3rd parties, and its lifespan was shortened prematurely.

The "bigger than iOs, and smaller than CoD" budget realm is the "middle ground" this article refers to, and publishers don't want to go there any more. The reason being that its difficult (and disproportionately expensive) to advertise a franchise which isn't almost guaranteed (a la CoD) to be a hit. Without adverts, a "moderately" expensive title gets lost in the sea of titles that can, and did, afford better branding and advertisements.

Dollar for dollar, the high-end and the low-end have the best return. The Wii was especially painful, because the demographics, and hence the money needed to broadly advertise titles, was too widely spread -- it costs a LOT more to advertise at Target and in a Super Bowl ad, than it does at GameStop and on IGN, for example. You can at least count on a substantial number of X360/PS3 consumers actually visiting those cheaper locations, whereas with the Wii, you can't.

With the limited budgets Wii games were supposed to manage (Nintendo flaunted this as an advantage for a long while), they didn't warrant good marketing budgets, by virtue of not being spectacular enough to actually impress the masses with.

Hence, the 3rd parties avoided the Wii, with good reason. Every game had to be an exclusive (which effectively made the Wii market go head to head with the X360/PS3 market combined), and marketing wasn't any cheaper for the Wii -- it was, in fact, more expensive... and on top of that, what can you show when people ask to see the spectacle in action?
