In a press release today focused mainly on the success of the recently released Skyrim Creation Kit and Steam Workshop, it was revealed that the console versions of Skyrim garnered equally strong fan demand.
I'm not surprised 3rd party software makes up most of the market share/sales.even though a platform is full of exclusives many gamers choose to pick up the multi software instead.
I just looked on Steam workshop and there is near 2000 mods already o_O
I honestly have a hard time removing Skyrim from my 360 tray. I have literally dropped the play of over a dozen games this past fall and havent looked back. Rarely does a game come along that can engross you in its world like Skyrim has. Easily jumped to the top echelon of gaming experiences I've had this gen. Gears of War 3 and Uncharted 3 are the best of the best that both consoles released as exclusives last year. But I have zero issue with a phenominal game like Skyrim getting as much retail love as it has from all consoles. Mass Effect 3 will be the only game at this point that can pry my hands away from Skyrim at this point and I still will probably end up sneaking a few hours of Skyrim in every now and then before ME3 is completed. I can't even imagine what going to happen when the first DLC arrives. Evil
agreed, its a great game, i love playing this on my ps3 after a hard days work.
This game is crack! I swear I was having withdrawals after I sold the game.
@hazardman You sold Skyrim? What's wrong with you? :D
All thedude44 said was that he likes to play Skyrim on his PS3 after a hard days work. And 5 of you disagreed with it. Why? Because he said PS3? Are people on this website really that petty? Anyway, it's great for Sony and MS to have a third party game do this well on their consoles because it just reassures that they provide platforms that are conducive to the success of third party studios. I'll bet Nintendo wishes they could have half the third party success that the other two companies have, but that's what you get for being arrogant to them for so long.
They should be comparing the sales as per platform, so sales of the games on xbox360 versus the xbox360 exlcusive etc. If you are going to compare the sales of a game on all platforms then why not compare to another game also on multiple platforms say call of duty?
@Sashamaz they are... "The Xbox 360 version of Skyrim outsold all Xbox 360 exclusive titles" "Skyrim on PS3 also outsold all PlayStation 3 exclusive titles on that platform."
@AngryTypingGuy Can you imagine how bad it would have been if he said he likes to play skyrim on his 360 after a hard days work?
And Skyrim is just a much more popular game than any PS3 or Xbox exclusive, and widely held as better games than their exclusives. You are giving widely held underperforming titles like Gears 3 and Uncharted 3 too much of a pass.
Underperforming? Wow. You have some high standards there. A multiplat selling more than any exclusive is hardly surprising, because it has a much larger potential user base.
"too much of a pass." I'm not following you. Why would you praise Skyrim and then point out the review flaws concerning Skyrim? Or did you just try to say that completely polished games with infinitely more replayability (via co-op and multiplayer) were given a pass while a bug filled game with mind numbingly repetitive "quests" was somehow not given a pass?
nah, its an opinion. its like someone saying lord of the rings(skyrim) is better than die hard/indiana jones (uncharted) there subjective.
@wintersun616 The PS3 version of Skyrim sold more than any PS3 exclusive and the 360 version sold more than any 360 exclusive. Its the same user base. Im super happy and surprised at the success of this game. ES has been my favorite video game series since Daggerfall and i would always bring ES games up in my favorite game conversations only to have ppl not know wtf morrowind or daggerfall was. Im very happy for Bethesda, they did one hell of a job at making a hard core rpg at heart, so good, that everyone can love. And @honkyjesus Not sure wtf you are talking about Gears 3 and Uncharted 3 aren't underperforming in any way, they are some of the best games i (plus millions of ppl and critics) have ever played.
A popular game is popular no matter if it was exclusive or not (compared to multiplats on same system) Did you ever saw someone went to gamestop and asked "hey, what are the latest exclusives released for -----" Final fantasy was popular with sony and still popular today. Same for resident evil, ninja gaiden and etc. A good game is good no matter what the system is. In the end they are just piece of electronics to run those games.
Well said Dark, so very true. People on this site get to hung up on the term exclusives. It's good to see these games do big numbers. Hopefully Kingdom gets the same numbers and more devs will follow making epic games of the sort. It is also good to see the old stereotype of CoD killing other game sales smashed against pointed poison rocks.
As much as i love kingdoms i doubt it will sell as well or any where near skyrim. Almost all of my friends don't even know what it is. I just hope they atleast make enough money from it to make a sequel because i'm having a blast with it.
"gamers choose to pick up the multi software instead" For PS3 gamers maybe, 360 owners actually buy 360 games.
I don't think you can make that call as fact. They all buy the games. Xbox exclusive i think sell way less on avg then ps3 exclusives aside from halo and Gears.
like forza 4? alan wake?
How about Halo, Fable and Gears? Is there even a game on the PS3 that has even half the Halo 3 sales? BTW Forza 3 sold 5 million and Forza 4 is on its way to match that.
That's Micro$oft biggest exclusive so obviously it's going to sell, not only that but Halo 3 came out years ago. Gran Turismo 5 came out at the end of 2010 and it's sitting at 7million. Forza 3 was bundled like hell and everyone knows that. Forza 4 will never reach 5 million only if it's bundled like Forza 3.
Metal Gear Solid 4 sold more than 5 million (as of DECEMBER 2009) and it's a PS3 exclusive while Halo 3 sold a bit more than 10. Get your facts straight and stop crying like a little girl.
@ZippyZapper: Gran Turismo 5. It's waving at you.
Are you saying that you own every 360 exclusive in existence?
Get a life. Seriously.
OT: Skyrim is a multi-platform game so not really surprising. For xbox i only own (atm) Halo, gears 3 - but have played the other gears (borrowed), alan wake. Ps3 is only ND games, have played killzone etc.
You people can talk sales numbers all day long dosn't really matter. The only thing that astounds me is that on N4G all i hear about is sony boys claiming to be getting certains games, "DAY 1!!!!!!!!!!" yet when the day comes, they do squat, guess theyre busy posting on N4G.
"For PS3 gamers maybe, 360 owners actually buy 360 games" Did you even read the title? Clearly that isn't true.
"claiming to be getting certains games, "DAY 1!!!!!!!!!!" yet when the day comes, they do squat, guess theyre busy posting on N4G" So if a game sold....say, only 100K.....you have enough information to assume those people on N4G didn't buy the game? The internet crowd with access to information are the people MOST LIKELY to buy that game. You have no place pretending to know whether or not Johnny Mc360 or Bobby Ps3RULEZ bought the game or not.
most gamers arnt as updated on games and exclusive as most people on n4g... for instance the other day my cousin asked me to get him halo.....and he has a ps3...
You speak the truth and most people here dont seem to understand that.
Gears Of War 3: 3,057,644 units sold thru: Jan 28th. Skyrim 360: 2,757,156 units sold thru: Feb 4th. Uncharted 3: 1,316,785 units sold thru: Feb 4th. The truth may be somewhere out there. Maybe Skyrim owners should release the actual breakdown (NPD) to prove their point. Shipped means nothing; sell thru does!
In 2011, And only on USA. Very impressive.
who didn't see this coming
Wow, didn't expect it to outsell Gears of War 3. Most impressive.
Well of course it did.
You make a great game and people will buy it. Skyrim was my personal favorite game of 2011, but I think Batman Arkham City was a close second. Glad to see something other then a shooter was number one.
"You make a great game and people will buy it." No, sorry, it' s way more complicated than this. It can be true in some cases, but it' s not the rule.
Poor Rayman Origins. What a kickass game.
Yea i agree it is not the rule. It's like the iphone the competitor has probably a better product more features but all that is piss in the wind compared to hype.
Well a lot of people have opinions on "great games". I personally haven't played many games in 20+ years of gaming to compare to Skyrim. There have only been a few of what I'd consider to be "great games" this entire generation, and yes they have all sold very well. I heard about Skyrim through word of mouth, that rarely happens for me. Everyone was talking about the game and playing it. That's my take on things anyway. You might not have the same opinion, but we are all different.
I doubt it unless they mean every game by itself and even then its hard to believe. they would have to lump ps3/360 sales as 1 to best either ps3 or xbox
Thats fantastic news for a fantastic game. Well deserved.
Still at's not exactly honest to compare multiplatform and exclusives, especially when that multiplatform is second best sold game in 2011. :-P And still totally well desirved!
Of course it did when you combine all three platforms versus a single platform exclusive. The article is laughable.
This only proves if you makes something worth a shit, people will buy it. Where are the pirating reports?
I feel sorry for those PS3 players who bought Skyrim. They got ripped off.
I feel sorry for both. I seen both in action and both buggy as hell. More for the ps3 still, but how can a game be goty and be that buggy and laggy on consoles
No need to. I've really enjoyed playing 'Skyrim' on PS3 and have never regretted the purchase.
i was 113 hours into the game on ps3 my save file was 12gb. i didnt have half the reports of what people where saying went wronge. it seemed like it frooze up once a day on me. like in a 5 hour period. and had some laggin but not bad at all. it never once was unplayable. but i did have one instance a dragon was flyin backwards and i couldnt kill it. i just left him there and continiued on if you turn off the auto saves. especially the travel one it seemed to help out a ton on making it less lagy. plus i had a new hd put in my old fat 60. i hear the more room you have the better it ran. idk what the case was but i played morrowind and daggerfall both for the pc back in the day and they had just as many problems as skyrim did on my ps3. i still might get it on pc someday im hoping to get a new rig. cause some of the mods look really good. but my old pc got fried in a lightning storm. and now i just got my laptop. i gues thats why you go for monster surge protectors . lmao i had them on everything but this i didnt realize my pc didnt have one. some cheap walmart one ahhhhhh
Not at all, the game is great and with the patches it has become even better.
Skyrims bugs are the reason Zelda Or Uncharted 3 were the true games of the year.
Should judge it against other multiplats in my opinion, comparing it to exclusive sales is a bit, redundant, as exclusives by the very nature of BEING exclusive have smaller user bases...
The sales numbers are impressive, to be sure. And ten million is quite a lot of copies. It's also true that it sold more than any single exclusive. But isn't it silly to compare them to exclusives as if they're the only things that got outsold? How many multiplats got outsold by Skyrim? How many multiplats got outsold by exclusives?
not sure why.. its a slideshow on the ps3 hardly goty material. Even 1.04 still causes my slideshow... sometimes it feels like i could animate everything that happens in a processing sketch. lmao, thats how bad it is. (~60hrs put into skyrim)
you're 60 hours in. good job going through all that!
^ slideshow didnt start happening until about 50 hrs in.. the game started slowing down dramatically. It really felt like a framerate crash.
Lol such an unfair comparison. They are using combined sales of skyrim from the 360 and Ps3 version into a total sale put against a limited selling game since its only on one console. If you count it by separate platforms than many Ps3 exclusives outsold Skyrim on the Ps3 version and many 360 exclusives outsold the 360 version of syrim. Why compare a 360/PS3 version of skyrim sales against a game on a single platform? If anything try to compare it to other multiplatform games like GTA or Call of duty.
Facts are not fair or unfair, they simply are.
Duh. It's multilplat. When you add sales from all three consoles together, yeah you're going to get more than a single-console-exclusive sold.
idiots. they are talking about skyrim sales for 360 vs 360 exclusives.. not skyrim ps3+360+pc vs 360 exclusive.
Thank you! The kids here can't read. They are NOT combining all versions and comparing against one platform. From the article: "The Xbox 360 version of Skyrim outsold all Xbox 360 exclusive titles in 2011 in North America" "Skyrim on PS3 also outsold all PlayStation 3 exclusive titles on that platform"
Why are they saying it outsold the exclusives? When it didn't not even close
Yeah, Skyrim's great, but just wait until Mass Effect 3 launches. Retailers are having problems keeping up with pre-orders, and you know the lines are gonna be as long as the CoD ones were.
I saw this happening for the 360 but Skyrim out selling PS3 exclusives was definetaly a shocker.
Now maybe they can spend some of that $650mil and hire some competent programmers and a real Q&A team.
Dont know why its such a success, not that good a game, great for mods but thats about it. Demon's soul tons better.
