GameZone's Lance Liebl comments on a child's death in the Mass Effect 3 demo and discusses the double standard when it comes to such storytelling elements, comparing it to Modern Warfare 3 and Dead Island.
Double standard? OMFG..give me a break. MW3 and Dead Island you visually see the child killed. ME3 the kid loads into a transport ship that closes up as it takes off it gets blown up. That is a decidedly different way to convey the horror of war or a childs death. Had you been looking into little Timmys eyes as the ship blew up and you saw the pain on his face then maybe we should be talking. but seeing people board and plane/ship and then see the vehicle blow up is not nearly as gripping as watching a child die from gas or fall to its death (even though it was a zombie kid which means it was dead already).
Seems more people are concerned with kids dying in video games than real life where btw it happens a lot more.
Hahaha bubbles man, that post rendered the whole article pointless..
I think that's what he's saying. That any uproar over a child's death in a video game is stupid, but that people take offense with certain games doing it and not others.
People take offense to seeing a child visually killed, i.e. MW3, and that direct horror of the visualization. That is where the whole issue revolves... its not that kids are killed, its actually seeing the violence visualized against them first hand versus implied.
I think those kids got it easy. I'd say the kid in the intro to Homefront suffered through something a whole lot worse than death. ... but yea, as you said, they didn't actually show the kid getting killed, it's just something the viewer assumes. Otherwise, you might as well say that Fallout3 lets you kill kids by blowing up Megaton.
Is the media finally not freaking over every little moment in gaming that isnt PG??? Maybe we can finally get more adult games that explore deeper meanings, symbolism, and have other themes than "AMERICA IS THE BEST" or "KILL ALL TERRORISTS". Gaming can mature. There will be more silent hill 2s and bioshocks. Maturity will come from having deeper meanings rather than big tough macho guys shooting gang members. Theyll explore the human mind in ways that movies and books never could. A man can dream. ;_;
WHAT??? ME3 KILLED A KID???? *Bats eye* 0_X
Hahaha, You show them!
It's called emotion. Don't you want that in games ? I know I do.
people need to stop whining and being so sensitive to games. If anything, we need more levels like no russian, resident evil racism, kids dying like the dead island trailer. Bring the controversy, movies do it, why cant games? all you christians who get offended, you are all hypocrites.
Thank you ME3... For the love of god people who think this is wrong, IT'S A GAME! It's not real in any way shape or form.
I want you to know, in no way am I offended by the death of a child in a video game. They do it in movies. A video game isn't real; the kid isn't real. They're just trying to get an emotional response out of you and have you feel the impact of the invasion. I'm just baffled by people that are. - Quote from the article.
What games kills kids in it!!? ...watches movies, TV shows, cartoons, animes...yep..*bats an eye*
Fox news: Mass Effect 3 pornography and child killings!
Thanks for ruining the Psn demo ive yet to download due to it arriving so late in the afternoon "Riggans42". But from now on ill stay away from headline articles that reveal in detail things.
Sorry, I figured the video of the demo has been around, and there's been tons of videos and stuff. My bad.
@Lirky, the good news for you is this little tangent is just that... a small snippet from part of the demo and not at all a major focus. From all the teasers we have seen showing London burning, etc...we know people are dying. You will still very much enjoy the demo.
Well Yahtzee absolutely nails this argument regarding MW3 in one of his extra punctuation columns: http://www.escapistmagazine... I've yet to play the demo and don't intend to, (just going to buy the game at some point), but the context of it in ME3 seems totally different. It definitely seems to have more emotional and dramatic weight. MW3 is just a monolithic corporation (activision) blowing a child to smithereens for shock value. As for Dead Island, symbolically, using a childs death to falsely market a product, is all kinds of deranged, hence f*ck Dead Island. Underneath both MW3 and Dead Island, there's a strong and disturbing commercial, corporate element that makes it kind of messed up, like they don't give a sh!t what it symbolizes, they're just superficially trying to enhance their games.
I want to kill the kids in Skyrim. Running around smiling all the time. FUS RO DAH!
oh, who the **** cares... it's a video game, not an actual person.
I refuse to "click through" to these retarded articles to give them the ads. Nobody bats an eye because Mass Effect is relatively "mature" content wise. Sorry that I wont troll your useless article and give you more advertising revenue.
I honestly don't understand the hatred on the article. He's simply pointing out that MW3 was blasted with hate because of a child death. The headline is actually a little misleading... the author even writes, "I want you to know, in no way am I offended by the death of a child in a video game. They do it in movies. A video game isn't real; the kid isn't real. They're just trying to get an emotional response out of you and have you feel the impact of the invasion. I'm just baffled by people that are."
Personally I found the "shocking scene" in Modern Warfare 3 to be cheap, hollow and manipulative. It felt more like a bunch of suits at Activision had insisted it was put in because the series is now expected to have one shocking moment per game than a truly emotional event.
After the helicopter crash in MW when the nuke went off they had to keep topping themselves like a bad action movie. The No Russian level in MW2 was garbage. Not because you're killing civilians, but because you are killing them yourself, when you could have watched a 10 second snippet on the MW2 news loading screen. Do I mind that I shot them? No. Did it do anything to raise my opinion of the game? Absolutely not.
Wait there is a character model for a child in a Mass Effect game? Now that is news
On noooos. Tragic. A single tear rolls down my face.
You guys remember the Mass Effect 1 fiasco? That is why no one is messing with Mass Effect. Journalist are scared if they are not in depth, fair and balanced, they will reap the fury of the internet elites............
Know why nobody said anything? BECAUSE NOBODY WANTED THAT TO BE SPOILED. Its like one of those things that shouldn't be spoiled, and these guys just did. Sure it was sad to see this, but I didnt go posting it on twitter and stuff about it because of spoilers. Its like the MW3 thing. You dont tell people about it unless they've seen it too.
If u played the demo......you would see Shepard does it for us.
Its a F***ing game. Theres no outcry over innocent afghans being killed everyday yet when theres killing in a game, the industry is in uproar
This appears to be a part of an epic scene that is on-going. There is an emotional overtone with the type of music being played. In MW3 its simply a cut scene, created to "shock" the viewer, and provide cheap thrills.
Great freakin' demo. Going to go down as one of the best games of all time regardless of how many children the Reapers kill.
