OXM: four reasons JRPGs still matter

"Let's hope there's never a genuine Final Fantasy."

The story is too old to be commented.

I would love to see more JRPGs on consoles.

looking forward to:

Ni no Kuni
Tales of Graces f
Xenoblade Chronicles (U.S. release)

Knight_Cid2134d ago

And if consoles ever rise past 4th place in japan overall next gen you might

dirigiblebill2134d ago

(1) Decrease the reliance on grinding
(2) Decrease the reliance on cutscenes
(3) ???
(4) Profit!

Jam_sponge2134d ago

Grinding's fine as long as the combat's fun.

dirigiblebill2134d ago

I literally don't get that at all. Why does advancing through a game have to be tied to some arbitrary point acquisition process? Why can't it be tied to meaningful gameplay choices instead?

FlashXIII2134d ago

Why does there need to be grinding? I play JRPGs for the story not to sit there grinding crap out.. save that for the MMO junkies who enjoy wasting pointless hours on time consuming nonsense.

tiffac0082134d ago (Edited 2134d ago )

Its a matter of cultural perspective, in the west grinding (outside of MMO's) is considered a hassle, an unnecessary choir but in the east its considered a challenge, a barrier that can only be broken through hard work and patience.

Now for me, if a developer wants us to grind in a none MMO game, then the gameplay must be enjoyable and there always has to be an area where we can grind with ease for both money and level.

I don't want to grind inching my way to a level or grinding in hopes the item that I need would drop. That's for MMO's not for standard JRPG's. I can live with grinding but it has to be sensible that it won't ruin my fun of the game.

Marquis_de_Sade2134d ago (Edited 2134d ago )

The issue I have with grinding is that it often requires little in the way of skill and ends up as nothing but an arduous chore. Simply hammering the same spell/attack over and over. Rinse and repeat. Little thought process is required, it's simply a mundane and outdated game ideal that needs to be gotten rid of (at least in single player games).

Decrease cutscenes? HELL NO! I'll never forget the epic cut scenes of FF7-10. Cut scenes not only flesh out the story but help to build the emotion. If you dont like cutscenes you should just stick to American rpgs.

CBaoth2134d ago

I guess if you dont like grinding perhaps it is YOU who should stick to American RPGs. Ironic that one staple of JRPGs should be jettisoned whilst you rabidly defend another.

MaideninBlack2134d ago

This should be titled "Why Final Fantasy still matter" 'cause no other jrpg gets the same praise or sales.

Knight_Cid2134d ago

Of course japanese rpgs still matter. Only a troll or someone with no knowledge would say otherwise.

They are stil the most diverse, original, fun group of rpgs around

Megaman_nerd2134d ago

and that's why they are flopping on scores and sales right?

Knight_Cid2134d ago (Edited 2134d ago )

Are you referring to alpha protocol, risen, or dragon age 2?

Seriously though there are some games from all genres and regions that dont score well ( irrelevant) and dont sell high on unit sales ( only profit matters)

lets take last year for example and the release of disgaea 4, 7th dragon 2, ff type zero, dragon quest vi, dq joker 2, pokemon black white, radiant historia, tactics ogre psp, ff 4 complete, trails in the sky, last story,13-2, gungir, gloria union, ragnarok srpg, super robot wars z2 part 1, tales of xillia, and more

all either scored very well overall or sold well or both

There is a reason why sega, namco, nintendo, square have hit profit records this gen. Alot of it has to do with there rpg work

On another note look at 13-2. Its gotten more 7.5-9.5 reviews than more rpgs in the last month COUGH KOA COUGH

Megaman_nerd2134d ago

All those games you mentioned only sold decently in Japan and most of them failed to even get an 75/100 on metacritic let alone an 80/100. They may still be relevant in Japan but Japan is just 1 very small sector of the gaming community.

Games like DQ Joker and Disgaea 4 didn't even sold 100,000 copies outside of Japan (which is a gigantic flop and total waste of money on localization). FFXIII/Pokemon sell only on name and Dark Souls because it hardly resembles a JRPG but outside of these 3 nothing else is relevant.

Elemental_2134d ago (Edited 2134d ago )

@megaman

now youve gotten me angry necause you really dont know anything.

All those games sold fantastically in japan. And like whats been said. Are you going the sales=everything route?

If thats the case wii fit and wii sports are the best games this gen

Metacritic is irrelevant dude...............japan is the largest sector of the game comminity

or do you want to talk about the US and how spending on gaming has been down the last 5 years, and last month spending on new games was at its lowest levels since 2004.

d most of them failed to even get an 75/100 on metacritic let alone an 80/100. They may still be relevant in Japan but Japan is just 1 very small sector of the gaming community.

"Games like DQ Joker and Disgaea 4 didn't even sold 100,000 copies outside of Japan (which is a gigantic flop and total waste of money on localization). "

Now I know your trolling. Because actually disgaea 4 sold more than 100k in the US. DQ sold around 50k at a time when the ds was being phased out which is great. And I am sure both games made profit.

And if you go on nisa's forum and tell them disgaea 4 was a flop and a waste of money they would laugh at you and ban you.

Its easy to be a tough guy when you dont know what your talking about

"FFXIII/Pokemon sell only on name and Dark Souls because it hardly resembles a JRPG but outside of these 3 nothing else is relevant. "

you arent relevant. Pokemon sells only on name? Thats the other dumbest thing ive ever heard. Pokemoln has the largest metagame community of any game in history dyde.

Dark souls is a from software game that resembles from software rpgs from other gens.

"n particular, the company noted that Tales of Xillia sold more than 760,000 copies,"
http://www.gamasutra.com/vi... ... rofits.php

"Sales of The Legend of Heroes: Zero no Kiseki are so strong Falcom is sharing their spoils with shareholders. "
http://www.siliconera.com/2... ... of-profit/

"Strong performance by Disgaea 4 was the reason for the increased sales forecast, the company said in a statement. Following its February 24 release, the game has seen repeat orders."

http://andriasang.com/comuq...

Seems like these companies are doing ok to me. I could of posted another 10 companies who are doing great off of rpg work
