NGB: Uncharted: Golden Abyss Review

The game retains a solid 8-10 hours of play time, but beyond this the longevity isn’t especially great, with none of the multiplayer functions from the PS3 titles present, and the sheer volume of hidden collectables being more daunting than inviting – there are pages upon pages of photographs to take, papers to browse, statues to observe, rubbings to, well… rub, making it quite difficult to keep up. With all of this in mind though it’s still got enough of the Uncharted magic to make it work – there’s plenty of exploring, shooting, and wise-cracking to make your stay a pleasant one. It’ll take a more dedicated fan of the series to see it through for multiple plays, but even if you do only manage it the once, it’ll be a ride to remember.

I read this as the game has too much content and no MP. Finally Uncharted is back with a single player game and exploration and people complain. I hate this generation.

Thanks for the comment, NukaCola.

For us, 7/10 still represents a good game, and that is what Uncharted: Golden Abyss is. The single player is good, but not at the standard of the PS3 Uncharted titles. A different developer handled it, and whilst it retains quite a bit of the console versions greatness, you can still tell it is not developed by Naughty Dog.

To add to that, out reviewer also stated that the touch controls don't add much to the overall experience, and feel quite tacked on.

Its the context of what I have read. I hear the touch is good but not always great. I think there is just too much nitpicking. I am not going to claim Sony hater like which gets flows around the net, but come on. Gamespot's review was terrible. They tore into it and complained about everything. If something was good, they found a negative against it. I just want some honest reviews, not this 2006 horse crap again.

Thanks for the reply, NukaCola.

Haven't read Gamespot's review, so we can only speak in relation to our own one. We're all big fans of the Uncharted series at NGB, even awarded the part 3 with a 10/10. We really wanted to like Gold Abyss as much as the PS3 games, but unfortunately thought it was lacking in certain departments (mentioned in the review).

Still, as stated in the previous reply, we think it is a good game (hence the 7/10) and well worth picking up if you're a fan of the series.

I'm not sure but i think Sony Bend have said that multiplayer will be added with an update after release.

I hope they multiplayer.Still a good game.

if this was a mobile 360 or ipad game it would've gotten 11/10
but since its a sony game 7/10

Really? Are we going to have two years of this again just like when the PS3 released?

It's not made by naughty dog, it's for a handheld console. In what logical way would this have ever matched Uncharted on consoles?

The name Uncharted does not equal an automatic 10/10. People complain saying Cod, GTA etc get free passes but then moan when Uncharted doesn't.

It was never going to be as good as Naughty Dog's Uncharted. But it is still a good game.

NukaCola2014d ago (Edited 2014d ago )

You can't always default discredit a game based on the techs of the platform and do it unbiasedly though.

Uncharted on any mobile device will never compare to what the PS3 can do.
The Wii and PS3/360 are not even close in visuals but Rayman is a 10 on all three consoles.

It's hard to argue on this. For a launch title on a new handheld system, what Golden Abyss has acheived is remarkable. It shouldnt be dismissed as NOT GOOD ENOUGH since it cant hold up to the latest PS3 game. And for the record this game looks better than those AAA brethren in many ways and Golden Abyss does exploration and puzzles on a wavelength I always dreamed the PS3 games did. This is a really good game. And I am sure the Vita will be a haven for REALLY GOOD experiences.

@OmniSlashPT

You have just proven this point. Thank you.

Infinity Blade is a great game on the iOS. It's using the iOS and its features to create the best experience possible. It doesnt get flagged for being a linear rail mike tyson epic hack and slasher. It doesnt compare to something like Demons Souls so should it get gigged? No!

I really dont think comparison reviews are right. They are not fair. They dont work.

Nuka bubble for you. I Don't want to trash any review as its a guide or opinion based on a persons expectations and/or thoughts on any game/system. That being said ITS FREAKING UNCHARTED ON A HANDHELD! That in its self is a major accomplishment. At this moment the question should be is it the best they can offer on the Vita and should never be compared to the PS3. As much fun as Infinity Blade and Angry Birds can be for the iPhone (I have owned every gen of iOS products) it will never be able to compete with what Vita can offer for "gamers" due to the fact it has no buttons. Do I think Uncharted for Vita should be a 10/10..no that should be for the best of the best no matter when they launch and this Uncharted is probably 7 or 8 out of 10, but don't knock it for adding "unneeded swipes and rubs" because thats what its made to do. Its not made to emulate the PS3 "yet" its meant to give a close representation to what we have at home but add in features the PS3 cannot like touch.

OmniSlashPT2014d ago

Infinity Blade is like the best game ever, then Golden Abyss comes and it's just average. LOL I'm not trashing this review in particular, but the big reviews in general (IGN, GS, GT).
