Square Enix is partly to blame

Godmars2902080d ago

I blame the rush to HD gaming. JP devs weren't ready for the move, so now most are doing PSP and 3DS games.

Whitefox7892080d ago (Edited 2080d ago )

so apparently Final Fantasy is the only JRPG in the world? People seriously need to open their minds to other JRPG's. Most people are still waiting for Atlus to make Persona 5.

The Rock Bottom2080d ago

Well, the Final Fantasy series is/was the standard for amazing jrpgs....but Wada killed that magic. Lord please let Versus put SE and the jrpg back on the map. Maybe the lack luster sales of 13-2 will wake them up?

Knight_Cid2080d ago (Edited 2080d ago )

13-2 sold like gang busters trolly.

More great ff games this gen than any other

tactics advance 2, type zero, crisis core, crystal chronicles, 4 warriors of light, revant wings, and more and more and more

Jrpg have always been on the map.

In fact square has hit profit highs 3 seperate times this gen on the strength of there rpg work

Godmars2902080d ago

So far FF13-2 has only done 1/3 the numbers of FF13. In other words its sold 2 million versus 6 million.

You might be able to say its sold well for itself, but comparing its worth against the franchise you can't say its sold gangbusters.

Square certainly hasn't said jack about sales.

Elemental_2080d ago

@Godmars290

Only a tool compares sales of games directly without looking at circumstance.

ff 13-2 is a side game. No side game is expected to sell more than a main line numbered title

2 million for a side ff is fantastic

" comparing its worth against the franchise you can't say its sold gangbusters."

worth isnt derived from sales dude

Square has actually said quite alot. They announced it was one of the top selling games at japans largest retailer

jsslifelike2080d ago

I agree. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one left who enjoys the special nuggets that come as a result of Japanese game design.

Knight_Cid2080d ago (Edited 2080d ago )

Jrpgs have been thriving as much this gen as any other.

More games from series we havent gotten are being localized than ever, more companies are making them than ever

They come off as butt hurt ff fanboys who really dont know rpgs

@Godmars290

God can people on n4g be any sillier?

devs were completely ready for the move. Handhelds are

OMG

this is so silly. They dont even know the west created rpgs before this gen.

" All western rpgs are action rpgs"

WIZARDRY

I cant take them seriously

yokokoroma2080d ago

This shouldn't even be called, "What killed the JRPG", as it doesn't soley focus on that. There are a number of factors that are to blame for lack of console JRPG's. The number 1 reason being the western game market. Japan dominated the last two generations of gaming and at the forefront were JRPG's. Fastfoward and now the western market has shut the Japanese market out. (i.e. very few Japanese games get released here, if any)

The 2nd (and equally to blame as the 1st reason) is FPS, which Japanese developers now feel they have to compete with or imitate in order to sell a game. There are many other reasons, but those are the top 2.

Knight_Cid2080d ago (Edited 2080d ago )

Again are you for real?

Seriously? I cant believe n4g could allow people to post without knowledge

"Japan dominated the last two generations of gaming and at the forefront were JRPG's."

And the psp, wii, ds ps3 have sold the most worldwide. Whats your point? Japan has CRUSHED this gen.

And jrpgs are at the forefront yet again.

"Fastfoward and now the western market has shut the Japanese market out. (i.e. very few Japanese games get released here, if any)"

really?

Is that why front mission 1 was brought over for the first time? legend of heroes? star ocean 1?

Is that why more japanese games are localized than ever?

Is that why mario galaxy 1 and 2 are the highest rated games this gen? hmm?

do you seriously think we would of seen a vn with a female lead looking for husbands?

REALLY??????????????????

Japanese devs DONT feel they have to compete with fps

Kojima said it best " if you dont want to make a war shooter, dont"

jesus christ I cant take the lack of knowledge and narrow mindedness sometimes

yokokoroma2080d ago (Edited 2080d ago )

"Again are you for real?"

I am as real as they come.

"Seriously? I cant believe n4g could allow people to post without knowledge"

lol you replying to my response is equivalent to what you stated above.

"And the psp, wii, ds ps3 have sold the most worldwide. Whats your point? Japan has CRUSHED this gen."

lol you just brought up gaming devices, this topic is about a GAMING GENRE, which is JRPG's. (shakes head) thus this statement is irrelevant.

"Japan crushed this gen?"

No, they didn't (console wise) Japan was overshadowed by western games, mainly FPS (i.e.COD) and western RPG's (i.e. Dragon Age, etc...)(shakes head again)

"And jrpgs are at the forefront yet again."

No their not, consoles are the forefront, and JRPG's are not on them. (like they were the past 2 gens)

"really?"

For all your boasting in your previous post replies to those above me, you seem to can't put 2 and 2 together. The JRPG's you're referring to are old JRPG's. As far as NEW JRPG's goes they are RARELY IF AT ALL LOCALIZED. (i.e. Namco was hesitant to release Tales OF Graces F, they NEVER ported VESPERIA to PS3)

If what you stated was true, then all the TALES Of (Vesperia, Xillia) this gen would've made it to console.

"Is that why more japanese games are localized than ever?"

lol Where do you live at? if you compare this gen's localization stats to the last gen, you would see a significant difference. There are a WHOLE lot (A WHOLE LOT) less Japanese games getting localized this gen. In regards to CONSOLES, which is what this topic's tags are (i.e. PS3, Wii, Xbox360, NOT HANDHELDS)

"Is that why mario galaxy 1 and 2 are the highest rated games this gen? hmm?"

lol Did you just bring up an adventure/platform game on a JRPG topic? (shakes head) another irrelevant statement. Mario Galaxy is NOT a JRPG game.

"Japanese devs DONT feel they have to compete with fps Kojima said it best " if you dont want to make a war shooter, dont"

Really? do you keep up with Japanese gaming news? I don't think you do, otherwise you would know that the smaller developers do feel they need to compete with FPS. Even some big names, wish to do the same. (i.e. Capcom)

You quoted ONE Japanese developer, who is high profile, at that. Of course Hideo, can say that, he doesn't have to worry about competing with FPS, he's got MGS. It's yet another irrelevant statement.

"I cant take the lack of knowledge and narrow mindedness sometimes"

I found your whole reply funny, this last statement I quoted you on, you should apply to yourself. You lack both knowledge and comprehension, and are very narrow minded. You should've never replied to my response.

If there is a next time, which I don't think there will be, really THINK, before you reply to one of my responses.

Elemental_2080d ago (Edited 2080d ago )

@yoko

No offense but your wrong on every point. And you come off worse than him

Japan was overshadowed by western games? Is that why japanese games were reviewed the highest and sold the highest and generally are regarded the highest?

Western rpgs? seriously? you mean like how everyone wants to ignore bioware after dragon age 2? and how everyone wants to play devil survivor 2, xenoblade, nino kuni?

"consoles are the forefront, and JRPG's are not on them. (like they were the past 2 gens)"

So you can bring up consoles when it makes your false point, but others cant? Come on dude

Consoles were the least popular systems worldwide this gen.

If you had a brain you know japanese rpgs go on the most popular systems in japan. The ds,psp,ps3 were it. And guess where the bulk are on?

"As far as NEW JRPG's goes they are RARELY IF AT ALL LOCALIZED. (i.e. Namco was hesitant to release Tales OF Graces F, they NEVER ported VESPERIA to PS3)"

Last gen symphonia came to the gamecube, it was never localized in english.

Same with phantasia, ect.

You dont even know history dude.

"If what you stated was true, then all the TALES Of (Vesperia, Xillia) this gen would've made it to console."

what are you smoking

"if you compare this gen's localization stats to the last gen, you would see a significant difference."

Your right there is a difference, in this gen more rpgs are localized. Shiren first time coming over, dq v and vi first time, persona IS first time, and on and on and on

When was glory of heracles localized in any other gen? when was DQ v or VI?

"otherwise you would know that the smaller developers do feel they need to compete with FPS. Even some big names, wish to do the same. (i.e. Capcom)"

Oh is that why you cant provide a source? Why did sting make gungir instead of a shooter?

Why is capcom making resident evil 6 and not a shooter

No offense dude. But you know nothing of japan or rpgs.

You should stay out of these topics.
