I didn’t much care for Final Fantasy XIII. As a long-time Final Fantasy fan, I was angered by the incredible linearity, the ridiculous characterization and the overblown, hard to follow storyline. I spent the first 15-20 hours strolling through narrow, endless corridors and battling the odd group of monsters until I arrived at the next cut-scene. FFXIII effectively played itself. Apparently, the game opened up a little towards the end, but I had long given up by that point.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 marks the second direct sequel Square Enix have made to a Final Fantasy game, and they have taken the opportunity to go back to the original design and fix many of the issues fans had. I’m happy to report that other than the occasional misstep, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is a well needed return to form.
