Blizzard is suing Valve over the Dota name [Gamesplosions]

Blizzard has decided to sue Valve for using the Dota name which ‘for more than seven years has been used exclusively by Blizzard and its fan community, under license from Blizzard.’ according to Blizzard. Dota (or DOTA) stands for ‘Defence of the Ancients’ a fan made map for Warcraft 3. Valve hired the creator of the map and trademarked the name Dota to use for their upcoming MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game, Dota2.

Article has been corrected. Blizzard isn’t suing just taking legal action in opposition to Valves trademark of Dota.
The main point is still the same though, Blizzard are trying to stop Valve from using the Dota name on their game Dota 2.

Blizzard needs to keep out of this. Its ridiculous that they want to go after Valve after all these years. Blizzard had a chance to do what Valve is doing, yet the money hungry company did nothing. LONG LIVE DOTA 2

turokgames2354d ago

Plus Dota is quite old for the Valve especially when they are making Dota2. Blizzard aka Activision is just interested in profit.

illmatic2354d ago

this is true. Blizzard is already developing there own DotA clone, Blizzard DotA. Anyways DotA 2 is a great game so far, I've been having lots of fun with it. I think competition should stay, this way the developers can get real creative.

Dude. Say wut u want about the lawsuit stuff but blizzard is not all about the money. If that was the case they would be shattin games out like cod. They take extreme pride in making a solid next to perfect game. They put countless years into every game they make. I've never been dissapointed in anything they've made so far.

So they are suing over the name of a fanmade map of whom the guy who made it works for valve?

on how Laws work sometimes! you can be sued over your own name if they feel like it! afterall, it's a money game!

Kenshin_BATT0USAI2354d ago

Sadly I know better than most I'm a law student after all. xD

badz1492354d ago

you should know better :-)

Panthers2354d ago

Well since he used WC3 Editor to make the game, I suppose its technically Blizzards property. I believe you agree to that when agreeing to the Terms of Service or something.

Voxelman2354d ago

They are not suing they are are opposing Valve registering the DotA trademark.

Letros2354d ago

Valve was awarded a trademark for the name, Blizzard had their chance, sitting on another gold mine and were too preoccupied with milking WoW.

Megaton2354d ago

If Valve owns the trademark, I don't really see how Blizzard has much room to sue. Just Activision greed coursing through those veins.

Voxelman2354d ago

If you read this you will see that Blizzard are not suing, they are moving to block Valve from registering that DotA trademark. And from what I have read they have a pretty strong case.

gamingdroid2354d ago (Edited 2354d ago )

A trademark is supposed to protect the consumer, not the companies that own the mark. Thus, if there is enough confusion around the mark from a consumers standpoint, the trademark can be ruled invalid by the courts.

It's not about morals and who's right/wrong, but everything to do with not confusing the consumers i.e. it's not intended to protect the company involved, but the consumer instead.

The DOTA name is more commonly associated with Blizzard, and therefore they have a very strong case. I'm surprised Valve didn't just choose a different name instead....
