Why RPGs Are Not Dead- 10 Awesome RPGs To Look Forward To This Year

With the first person shooter taking over the gaming industry, a lot of people have started believing that the RPG genre is either dead or casualized to the core. However, 2012 seems to be a year that’ll be nothing short of paradise for all RPG fans. So many Role Playing Games have been announced for this year, and they all look awesome. So here’s a list of 10 upcoming RPGs to look forward to this year. (3DS, Diablo III, Mass Effect 3, Monster Hunter 4, PC, PS Vita, PS3, Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360)

Why is ME3 on this list?

I know , while ME2 was great, it was a non liner TPS, not an RPG. Maybe ME3 will change into a platforming game, or a racing game :p

And the RPGs I want ar not listed:

Tales of Graces
NiNuKuni
Devil Survivor 2
Last Story

Ni No Kuni is going to blow minds.. I pray this one doesn't fly under the radar.

Not having Ni no Kuni on a list like this shows 2 things:
-The author doesn't know a whole lot about RPGs
-Namco Bandai needs to start upping the hype.

Its JRPGs, RPGs made in Japan, that has a problem with HD consoles. Western RPGs - aside from being overrated, something that's been accepted rather than advanced - are in any real difficulty.

Xenoblade (U.S. release)

who said RPG's are dead?

Xenoblade and The Last Story

Both of those games will likely put most other JRPGs to shame. Though that should not be too hard to accomplish this generation. Lets hope we get RPGs next generation on the same scale as games like Skies Of Arcadia.

No one with half a brain would try to argue that RPGs are dead, or even dying, be they generic high-fantasy romps or quirky JRPGs.

One could, however, make the argument that the genre has become less than what it was, since greater fidelity has diminished the necessity for quality writing to draw the player in.

I would agree that their mass popularity seems to have dwindled in this post console shooter era.. But I pose that they are just as popular as ever, but that the industry has attracted so many new consumers that other genres are just selling more...

...You're agreeing with a point I did not make, and then countering this made-up argument by echoing my own sentiments.

Reading comprehension: it matters!

You basically said that rpgs aren't dead and I agreed and then prosed that the genre hasn't dwindled at all just that there are other genres that are selling alot more making it appear as though rpgs are dwindling... Not that hard.. Thanks for being a jerk about it..

RPGs are not dead! There are a shit load of them. The problem is that GREAT rpgs are dead! As i said above I hope everyone in here supports xenoblade and The Last Story when they drop.

Things are getting so bad for JRPGs that we have to fight for our gaming lives just to get them over to the west. Hopefully everyone in here supports Xenoblade this April.

unfortunatly it has been downloaded 1 million times so sales in us will be crap
LX-General-Kaos  +   1465d ago
Well its already a given that the game wont sell well. Its a JRPG in America. In these times that already makes it a commercial failure. I just want to get my old school gamer hands on as many of these games as possible before the great japanese devs go completely westernized.

Next generation I dont think we will see very many JRPGs at all. This generation sparked the movement of the west. It will continue stronger then ever next gen.

The only RPGs that are dying are jrpgs who the hell would say rpgs are dead wrpgs get more popular each year
Tzuno  +   1464d ago
Dude rpg is dead all the games on the list doesn't deserve the status of a RPG. Look back on Snes and PS1 and 2 where the real rpg's are.

RPGs are not dead. The JRPG is dead. And those are my preference.
