It’s Time to Reboot The Legend of Zelda

The notion of rebooting the Zelda franchise isn’t a new idea. There are quite a few editorials out there probing the possibilities for the future of the Zelda series, but this is a concept I’ve personally championed for a few years now. All things considered, now is the perfect time for Nintendo to give serious consideration to handing over development responsibilities to a new studio, and start the series over from a fresh perspective. Otherwise, Zelda’s in danger of heading down the same road Square Enix has taken for Final Fantasy – a path to irrelevancy. (The Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Wii)

This coming up at the same time as the article about Zelda: Valley of the Flood is kind of interesting. The author of this article says that there aren't any places in the timeline that need more flushing out, but when I look at the timeline, I see a number of gaps. Wars, eras, and most importantly - the freaking world flooding. Of course there are gaps between the games (with many people guessing at thousand year gaps)... Why reboot the series? Because people complain about the series becoming stale while buying every last cookie-cutter shooter that comes out? Nintendo doesn't seem like the type to reboot an iconic series - Capcom rebooting Resident Evil seems more likely.

^And yet Resident Evil 4, probably the most notorious reboot of all time, is still the best regarded Resident Evil in the entire series.

Hypocrisy is not some kind of logical proof. It's still a crying shame that generic space/military shooters can be endlessly re-released. That doesn't change the fact that the Zelda series needs to be rebooted because at this point, it really only appeals to that relatively small group of individuals that has no problem indulging in nostalgia over and over and over again.

It doesn't need to be rebooted. Why does every game need to sell to the mainstream? Zelda doesn't need to be rebooted at all. Theres plenty of story material still to be used and gameplay just needs to evolve. Not rebooted.

So what if it only appeals to a small group? Do you think Nintendo cares? Hell what do you care? Skyward Sword sold over 3 million and that'll only increase as with all Zelda games. So I fail to see your point.

Does it need to evolve? Yes. Be rebooted? Don't be ridiculous.

No, I'm sure Nintendo cares about as much as Activision does about the CoD series. And yet, that matters very little to me. That only proves that people have a very high propensity for swindling sales tactics and a general weakness for reliving the old days at the expense of progress.

Why to fix if it isn't broken?

Yes. Do a Zelda reboot, even if it's a side-project, something like "New Legend of Zelda" (like NSMB on DS). Go back to the way things were on the NES/SNES. Focus on combat, non-linearity, and exploration. Cut down on the puzzles (Zelda was NOT puzzle-focused until well after Ocarina) and cut down on the stupid NPCs.

ff is irrelevant? anything that sells 3 million copies each main addition isnt irrelevant regardless of whether you like it or not

Agreed. The 3D games need to innovate more. Skyward Sword just proved to me Nintendo can literally get away with anything. That game was more on rails than Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but isn't every Zelda game a "reboot." Direct sequels are rare and each game tries something radically different from all the games that came before.

What a dumb idea. Why reboot it when it just established it's true timeline and canon? It's always the core idea of puzzles and battle with a distinct flow but each executed in dramatically different ways. Personally, playing skyward sword, I am perfectly happy with how exists today and think nintendo knows better about what to do with their franchise then this author.
