Bitmob - You Should Play… Eternal Sonata

Bitmob - What was going through the mind of Frédéric Chopin in his final hours? If we're to believe Tri-Crescendo, his waning moments would seem to have been spent traveling a colorful storybook world, his companions with names like Viola and Jazza. It's actually an idea that's loaded with potential and one that perhaps could have been masterful in the right hands. It's the kind of premise that screams for the sure hand of someone like animation master Miyazaki Hayao -- someone who could have lifted it to the next level. (Eternal Sonata, PS3)

Yep - one of the better JRPGs of this generation.

Shame it didn't really take off enough for a sequel to be green-lit. :(

Other excellent JRPGs this gen that are now dirt cheap and well worth playing:

- Lost Odyssey (my personal fave this gen)
- Tales of Vesperia
- Folklore
- Infinite Undiscovery (get past the horrible first 2-3 hours and it transforms into a great game)
- Blue Dragon
- Xenoblade Chronicles
- Star Ocean: The Last Hope

I knew there must have been one other person who loved infinite undiscovery. That game really was a diamond in the rough. The battle system was great fun and its well worth the time to see the ending and last boss. The beginning is total shi* though.

I would add Magna Carta 2. Awesome graphics/art style and the battle system is one of the best ive ever played. The bosses are alot of fun, check it out.

Valkyria Chronicles is conspicuously missing from that list, but I otherwise agree.

Awesome that this incudes jap voice overs. Even if there is no trophies, people should def get this game. Great rpg hands down

You're very right.
And that's how I enjoyed the game: Japanese voice overs with English subtitles.

Shame that it wasn't carried over in the battles.

I think if they brought it over to the PS Vita, It'd probably get quite a bit of attention.

It shouldn't just be a straight-ass port though.. the developers should try to take advantage of the Vita's unique hardware features in-game whenever possible as well.

The Vita's gorgeous & vibrant OLED screen will no doubt help to bring out the game's beautiful & colorful artwork also.

Agreed!

JRPGs seem to work a bit better on handhelds in my opinion since they tend to use small-screen friendly design choices such as overhead / fixed cameras, turn-based combat, text boxes and very clean, colourful art styles.

I would love for Xenoblade Chronicles to get a port!

ES was a cool JRPG with a very interesting battle system. Characters and story were disappointing but definitely worth a try if you're looking for a good JRPG to play while waiting for Tales of Graces f to be released.

currently playing this game. weird that it has no open traveling parts. great combat system though :D

I agree with the title, anyone who hasn't played Eternal Sonata, should play it. (if they are into JRPG) However, I disagree with the author's statement that Eternal Sonata, is mediocre. The game's story is complex and the majority of those who played it, didn't pay attention to that. Chopin NEVER plays second string to any character in Eternal Sonata. The story is constantly revolving around him. Eternal Sonata, is a MASTERPIECE, it's the epitome of what a JRPG, could be. The plot twist at the end of the game alone, is enough to leave a JRPG fan in shock and awe. As it stands now, Eternal Sonata, is the BEST JRPG out here in NA for the PS3. I'm looking foward to Tales Of Graces F, but it's impact won't be the same as Eternal Sonata's!

i do think Fugue was a wasted character though (but that's another story)

eternal sonata is a good game but is not a master piece the last part of the game ( even with the tweak is weak ) and teh battle system while full of nice ideas is just too easy and lack challenge ..

the game is really good, definetely worth playing now that you can get it pretty cheap, the story (especially the end) is not that good, but still decent. It has great gameplay and really beatiful graphics

Im under the impression that there are 2 diferent endings, one is supposed to be better than the other

a beautiful game to say the least and i wish they make a sequel i won't think twice getting it.

this game was based on a true story believe it or not....
REALgamer  +   1302d ago
Only true part is that Chopin was a real person (obviously).

However, I seriously doubt that as he died he was dreaming about anime people with musical names running around bashing monsters...

It was an ok game but I loved the music.
