Convoluted how? The story itself isn't that difficult to follow, and this explanation makes it even easier(except for the part where Vanille is repeatedly referred to as "he").

Pretty much any chance you get to bash these two games, you do. Just like with any other series, why don't you give it a rest?

As presented in this article as a summary to a story, no. As an actual RPG where players are expected to participate, become immersed and be given details it crap.
