If singleplayer games die, then gaming dies with them, argues Xbox World's Steven Williams.
Tell that for the people who want to ruin great single player games like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, God of War, Batman, Half life for example. Heres me trying to list more, looking at my stack of games only to realise the ones I wanted to mention, Bioshock 2, Dead Space, Assassins Creed for example...have already got online tacked onto them. Ask developers for new, multiplayer focused IPs, don't ask for it in exsisting franchises you will ruin them.
I couldn't have said it better.
I dont see the problem with tacked on multiplayer as long as the single player is the main focus. You mentioned Bioshock 2 and i enjoyed the single player on that and also got a couple more hours out of the game with the multiplayer. Whats the problem?
Well for those of us in the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race we have seen the future.........and the future is games that allow you to play single player or instantly jump into a multiplayer mode. Many MMO's allow for you to go at it alone while simultaneously giving you the freedom to interact or team up on the fly with other gamers. But a complete genocide of SP games....NO NOPE NEVER NO WAY! You have SP and MP games and then you have the Hybrids. There are plenty of gamers for all types of games. Nothing has to die off except low quality and crap games like Bodycount!
Master race you say. So your a Nazi.
Nice!! I got a bunch of disagrees simply from saying "Glorious PC Gaming Master Race" and some 2kb pixel called me a Nazi! But the truth of my post is SP games will not die off and Next console gen you consolers will be lucky enough to play some of the innovative games us PC gamers are enjoying right now that let you go from SP to MP on the fly giving you the best of both worlds......one super huge world filled with 1000's of gamers and not limited to 32! Feel free to rage hate and disagree again if it makes you feel better! Gaming is evolving and it's name is MMO!
You got disagrees for being a d*ck. I doubt anybody's disagreeing with your stating that these various type of games exist. And I don't think they're disagreeing with your assertion that singleplayer games will disappear. So what could possibly have caused them to disagree with you? The only thing left is that part where you're being obnoxious. Nah, that couldn't be it. Your elitism and/or fanboyism can't possibly be the reason people are disagreeing with you.
Well it is for me and many others and it's a fact it is increasing more and more in that direction. The last single player game I played was on a cartridge format. Even when there was no online gaming on consoles I would only play split screen multiplayer or fighting games.
I wouldn't say multiplayer is the future. But there is certainly a place for multiplayer in gaming. I personally don't have the time to invest in the multiplayer of all games. Especially the games where the multiplayer is just tacked on. But games that do multiplayer well, I find the enjoyment to be had. I wouldn't say multiplayer is the future of gaming.
Multiplayer gaming IS the future. Anybody that disagree's is just in denial.
Different strokes for different folks. Some people want to be more social and play with their friends and other people. Others like to experience a story on their own and in their own time. I like both equally.
Yeah same here.
As much as I love a single player experience, the future from now on is gonna be tailored multiplayer experience with some lackluster SP experience/storytelling. Putting together a Single player game mode feels like a component than something that's obviously relevant to the game nowdays. When its supposed to be the other way around or a healthy balance between both. Not for all the games, but allot of our games are geared towards a MP XP. As for the future I can see still see a great SP XP. But with most company's still focusing more on MP than SP.
If they can make multiplayer work than I welcome it. In the next Batman game one person can be Batman and the other can be his sidekick/partner like the comics and do missions together.
I sure hope not. Multiplayer has been the same thing in every game. Deathmatch, team deathmatch...and now they all have perks. Ugh. I dunno, maybe I need to be a shooter fan to be a gamer in the future.
I enjoy single player and multiplayer gaming just as much. Each have their charm, and each bring different experiences to the table. Why can't both be 'the future'? This type of one dimensional, horny-for-hits gaming journalism we're being smothered with is getting tiresome.
If single player dies, its because they let it die. Both single and multiplayer games need to innovate and move forward. The same complaints can be made about both sides just doing the same things over. For me one major thing is to stop trying to make as many single player focused games have a multiplayer side. Keep it out of games like Bioshock and Mass Effect and don't even think about putting it in the next Batman. It just wastes resources for a tacked on multiplayer that could be used for the single player.
I think they could either co-exist in their current state or one day singleplayer experiences could be opened to a more open-world/multiplayer scenario....in a non-Warcraft way.
